Sciences Limited 2004 ii For Northland Region ABSTRACT The levels of Natural Hazards that Northland Region is exposed to, excluding floods and climatic events, are relatively low. Of the landslide, volcanic, seismic, tsunami, and mine subsidence hazards considered, the landslide hazard is assessed to be the most significant. Slope instability is common in the region and there are large areas of creeping slope failures in some rock types. However, these areas can be readily and clearly identified and action taken if required. A brief summary is shown below. The aim of this report is to assemble and present a review of existing information on natural hazards and their effects in the region for earthquake, tsunami, volcanic hazards, mine subsidence and landslides, and to identify “gaps” that may require additional work. The work has been undertaken by staff from GNS, Northland Region and Whangarei District Councils. 2.0 SEISMIC HAZARD Earthquake risk in Northland

    Part C – Policies – Indigenous Vegetation and Habitat 17 Indigenous Vegetation and Habitat 17.1 Significant Issues Loss of biodiversity and fragmentation of significant indigenous vegetation and significant habitats of indigenous fauna arising from land clearance, pest invasions, modification of indigenous wetlands, subdivision, use and development. Low representation of threatened and/or rare vegetation and habitat types in the protected areas network within the District. Finding a balance between the protection of ecosystems and ecological processes, and sustainable land development and use. Lack of public understanding of ecological processes and values leading to inappropriate land use. 17.2 Overview Since first human settlement in the District, large areas of native forests and shrub lands, freshwater indigenous wetlands, mangrove forest, mudflats and coastline have been lost or modified by direct or indirect human impacts. As a result of habitat changes, the District has a high number of endangered and threatened species. The effects on wildlife of loss of habitat vary, but for less mobile species with special habitat requirements, this can result in local extinction. More mobile species have special habitat requirements at certain stages of their life cycles, for example, the loss of breeding habitats could have serious long-term consequences for particular species. Habitats special to the District, and which are now poorly represented as natural ecological areas, include: • Taraire-puriri broadleaf forest remnants found on the basalt soils; • Mineralised flax, raupo and sedge swamps; • Acid peat bogs; • Podsol gumlands; • Lowland kahikatea/cabbage tree and swamp forest remnants; • Coastal forests and shrub lands; • Kauri and Podocarpus (rimu, matai, kahikatea, miro, kaiwaka, tanekaha forests); All of these habitat types have been severely reduced in area, or are highly modified and now often only occur as tiny modified relics of what once occurred in the District.

Shirley May Gates 2013 The Swamp Forest in Maungatapere Crater, Whangarei Photographer; R. Stewart 2011-12-08. ii ABSTRACT Whangarei lies within the Puhipuhi-Whangarei Volcanic Field, one of two fields located in Northland. The purpose of this project was to use a palynological study to provide information on the minimum ages of the young Whangarei cones, their vegetation history, and the approximate date of human arrival. Wetlands in the craters of the Maungatapere and Rawhitiroa basaltic cones were selected for this study since they both occupy discrete areas which only collect sediment from within their respective cones. A single peat core from each wetland was processed for fossil pollen and radiocarbon dating. Radiocarbon dating was performed by the University of Waikato, providing minimum ages for the volcanoes. The date for the base of the Maungatapere core was 10530 ± 136 cal. yr BP, and an age of 2775 ± 52 cal. yr BP was determined for the basal peat from Rawhitiroa. K-Ar dating performed previously indicated that these cones were about 0.30 my old. The pollen data indicated that a kauri-conifer-broadleaved forest was consistently present around Whangarei during the Holocene.

    11 GROUNDWATER RESOURCES Summary Objectives • Maintain groundwater quantity and quality to the extent that the use of the groundwater resources is sustainable. Pressures • There are currently 3747 bores registered with the council and 279 resource consents to take groundwater in Northland, which equates to a volume of 49,602 m3 of groundwater per day. This places a large demand on Northland’s groundwater resources. • Poorly constructed and maintained bores can result in groundwater contamination. • Changes in land use can not only result in an increase in the quantity of water taken from an aquifer but can also influence the amount of rainfall infiltrating into the aquifer (recharge) and groundwater quality. • The change in rainfall trends and temperature as a result of climate change is likely to result in decreased recharge to groundwater resources, and increased potential for saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers. State • Due to the varying geology in Northland, there are a large number of aquifers scattered throughout the region. These aquifers include large sand and shell bed systems such as the Aupouri Peninsula to small alluvial aquifers such as Russell. • Groundwater quality at the majority of monitored sites meets the Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand 2005 (MoH 2005). The highest percentage of non- compliance with the drinking water standards for bacteria occurs in many of the coastal areas and in three of the volcanic aquifers: Ruatangata, Maunu and Maungakaramea. • The majority of sites that exceed the guidelines for manganese and iron are fed from sand and gravel aquifers, while all sites monitored meet the guideline for nitrate.
