    Chapter 15 - Red Cedar Rebounds You cannot step twice into the same river. Heraclitus (circa 535 BC – 475 BC) While Heraclitus posited that “you cannot step twice into the same river,” the question is whether one tries a first time step into life’s river of challenges. For centuries the Red Cedar River has flowed from points east of Okemos, through Okemos and the campus of Michigan State University, and onward to points west. But, over the past half-century, only a select group of Okemos High Chieftain basketball players realized their dream of grabbing a rebound on the Chieftains home court and moving the basketball from the Chieftains O-ZONE to the Spartans IZZONE to become a Michigan State Spartan. Yet one Chieftain-cum-Spartan – Kristen Rasmussen – did step twice into the Red Cedar to return to the basketball court on which she once played Chieftain basketball and serve as head coach of the Okemos High girls’ basketball program. Over the past 60 seasons of Spartans basketball (‘60-61 to ’19-‘20), only 14 Chieftain basketball players traveled down the Red Cedar to change their uniforms from Maroon and White of the Chieftains to the Green and White of the Spartans, this happening when they stepped onto the court of Jenison Field House or the Breslin Center The “Time Line” graphics on the next two pages show the seasons in which Okemos High Chieftains were members of a Michigan State University Spartans basketball squad, with the second graphic showing the seasons (maroon) in which a Spartans basketball squad had no Chieftain.

Introduction - "The Environment" When is a contract not a contract? Where is job security as fleeting as the last seconds of a basketball victory? In what field is an employment contract broken as easily as made? None other than in the world of college coaching. At the commencement of the 1988-89 college basketball season, a total of 39 schools or approximately 13.4% of the 294 Division I institu- tions had new coaches at the helm.1 This compares with an all-time high of 66 new coaches or approximately 22.8% of Division I schools during the previous season.2 During the 1980s, approximately 384 coaching changes have taken place in Division I schools.3 Approximately 53 basketball coaches have changed jobs since the end of the 1989-90 season.4 The Amer- ican Football Coaches Association indicates that head football coaches re- main in NCAA Division I-A football programs for an average of only 2.8 years.5 The number of coaches employed at the 279 schools that have played in Division I Men's Basketball for all of the past 15 seasons include: Copyright 1991 by Martin J.

You likely do not know who she is, which is how Lori Soderberg prefers things. But she has been the nerve center for Spartan basketball for 43 years. How important do those inside the Berkowitz Center feel the executive secretary has been for more than four decades? Enough for assistant coach Dane Fife to place her on MSU basketball’s Mount Rushmore, next to her two bosses — Jud Heathcote and Tom Izzo — and her Lansing Everett High classmate Magic Johnson. "She kind of just keeps on trucking and doesn't let anybody or anything get to her," Izzo said Saturday. "I can maybe think of three or four times when she was mad, which is incredible — I mean, working for Jud and me, you should be mad every day. But she never let her emotions go. That's why she was a good balancing act for me. I'm off the deep end a lot, and she's never off the deep end. "I'm gonna miss her." Getting sufficient electricity to our customers is a team effort. We are helping to develop resources, including electrical energy, to provide jobs and opportunities for Montana’s young people who wish to continue to make the Big Sky Country their home. In the 1970’s, there will be 144,000 Montanans reaching age 21. They will require adequate electricity. So will the rest of us.
