[ 629 ] Notes on Nucula. By Kyosuke Hirasaka. Professor of Zoology, Imperial University, Formosa. With 5 Figures in the Text. THESEnotes record the result of work done at the Plymouth Laboratory during the summer of 1926. They deal chiefly with the feeding habits of Nucula, a Proto branch possessing the type of feeding mechanism characteristic of that order, and not found in any other Lamellibranch. During the course of my work I found VIes' interesting paper on the sense organ of Nucula. After studying the organ, I arrived at a different interpretation of its function from that reached by VIes. I owe very much to the kindness of the Director and other members of the staff of the Laboratory, and am also indebted to Professor H. G. Cannon for friendly advice. Three species of Nucula, common in the vicinity of Plymouth, were used, namely, N. nucleus, N. radiata, and N. nitida. Much important work has been done on Nucula nucleus, the most common European species, as well as on N ucula proxima and N ucula delphinodonta, which live on the American side of the Atlantic. Of course, many characters are common to these species, but not all. The material used was dredged in 20 to 30 fathoms off Plymouth by the research steamer" Salpa," N. nucleus"being the most abundant species. The Nucula were kept alive in a small glass dish with a little of the mud that was collected with them. A current of water from the general <tquarium supply was provided, and the animals remained quite healthy during the two and a half months of my stay at the Laboratory. -
Genetic Relationship of Asiatic Hard Clam Populations Collected in Northern Coastal Provinces in Vietnam Based on Mtdna Sequence Analysis
Journal of Aquaculture & Marine Biology Genetic relationship of asiatic hard clam populations collected in northern coastal provinces in Vietnam based on mtDNA sequence analysis Abstract Research Article The genetic relationship of some Asiatic hard clam (Meretrix meretrix) based on mtDNA Volume 7 Issue 1 - 2018 COI sequence analysis was investigated for populations collected in Thai Binh, Nam Dinh, Nghe An provinces in Vietnam. In addition, this research also targets at species Vu Thi Trang,1 Le Thi Quynh Chi,3 Chu Chi identification based on COI sequences. In total of 59 sequences analyzed, 19 sequences Thiet,2 Nguyen Huu Duc,3 Tran Thi Thuy Ha1 belonged to Meretrix meretrix species with Gen Bank accession number DQ399399.1. 17 1Centre of Aquaculture Biotechnology, Research Institute for sequences of M. meretrix were used for genetic relationship analysis among 3 populations. Genetic Relationships among Species of Meretrix (Mollusca: Veneridae) in the Western Pacific Ocean1 Ayako Yashiki Yamakawa,2,3,6 Masashi Yamaguchi,4,5 and Hideyuki Imai4 Abstract: We compared allozymes at 12 loci in 12 populations of six species of Meretrix: M. lusoria ( Japan, Korea, and Taiwan), M. petechialis (China and Ko- rea), M. ovum (Thailand and Mozambique), M. lyrata (China), M. lamarckii ( Ja- pan), and Meretrix sp. A (Okinawa, Japan). Our allozyme results were generally consistent with the major groupings currently recognized within the genus based on morphological characters. However, we found two cryptic or un- described species: Meretrix sp. A from Okinawa and M. cf. lusoria from Taiwan. The shell characters of Meretrix sp. A were similar to those of M. lamarckii, but the species was genetically distinct (Nei’s genetic distance D > 0.845) from all other species examined. The Taiwanese Meretrix population was morphologi- cally indistinguishable from Japanese M. lusoria, although the genetic distance between the Taiwanese and Japanese populations showed a high degree of ge- netic differentiation (D > 0.386). Meretrix lusoria seedlings were introduced into Taiwan from Japan in the 1920s, and Japanese M. lusoria was previously thought to be established as a cultured stock. However, our results suggest that the Taiwanese population may represent a sibling or cryptic species of M. lusoria. Asianhardclams, genus Meretrix (Vener- (Yoosukh and Matsukuma 2001). The Cretaceous record of the nuculid bivalve Acila (Truncacila) Grant & Gale, 1931, is established for the first time in the region extending from the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, southward to Baja California, Mexico. Its record is represented by three previously named species, three new species, and one possible new species. The previously named species are reviewed and refined. The cumulative geologic range of all these species is Early Cretaceous (late Aptian) to Late Cretaceous (early late Maastrichtian), with the highest diversity (four species) occurring in the latest Campanian to early Maastrichtian. Acila (T.) allisoni, sp. nov., known only from upper Aptian strata of northern Baja California, Mexico, is one of the earliest confirmed records of this subgenus. ‘‘Aptian’’ reports of Trun- cacila in Tunisia, Morocco, and possibly eastern Venzeula need confirmation. Specimens of the study area Acila are most abundant in sandy, shallow-marine deposits that accumulated under warm- water conditions. Possible deeper water occurrences need critical evaluation. Rumptunucula is proposed as a new genus for Pronucula vincentiana Cotton and Godfrey, 1938. Lectotypes are selected for Nucula pusilla Angas, 1877, Nucula micans Angas, 1878, Nucula torresi Smith, 1885, Nucula dilecta Smith, 1891, Nucula hedfeyi Pritchard and Gatliff, 1904, Deminucula praetenta Iredale, 1924, Pronucufa mayi Iredale, 1930, and Pronucula saltator Iredale, 1939. Nucula micans Angas, Nucula hedleyi Pritchard and Gatliff, and Pronucula concentrica Cotton, 1930 are considered synonyms of Nucula pusilla Angas. Pronucula voorwindei Bergmans, 1969 is synonymized with Nucula torresi Smith. Nucula diaphana Prashad, 1932 and Pronucula flindersi Cotton, 1930 are ranked as subspecies of Nucula dilecta Smith. -

INTRODUCTION An Upper Ordovician glacial episode is widely recognized as a significant event in the geological history of the Lower Paleozoic. This is especially so in the case of the Saharan Platform where Upper Ordovician sediments are well developed and represent a major target for hydrocarbon exploration. This paper is a brief summary of the results of fieldwork, in outcrops across SW Libya, together with the analysis of cores, hundreds of well logs (including many high quality image logs) and seismic lines focused on the uppermost Ordovician of the Murzuq Basin. STRATIGRAPHIC FRAMEWORK The uppermost Ordovician section is the youngest of three major sequences recognized widely across the entire Saharan Platform: Sequence CO1: Unconformably overlies the Precambrian or Infracambrian basement. It comprises the possible Upper Cambrian to Lowermost Ordovician Hassaouna Formation. Sequence CO2: Truncates CO1 along a low angle, Type II unconformity. It comprises the laterally extensive and distinctive Lower Ordovician (Tremadocian-Floian?) Achebayat Formation overlain, along a probable transgressive surface of erosion, by interbedded burrowed sandstones, cross-bedded channel-fill sandstones and mudstones of Middle Ordovician age (Dapingian-Sandbian), known as the Hawaz Formation, and interpreted as shallow-marine sediments deposited within a megaestuary or gulf. -

In total, 2801 DNA barcodes belonging to 569 species from China, Japan and Korea were analyzed. An overlap between intra- and interspecific genetic distances was present in 71 species. We tested the efficacy of this library by simulating a sequence-based specimen identification scenario using Best Match (BM), Best Close Match (BCM) and All Species Barcode (ASB) criteria with three threshold values. BM approach returned 89.15% true identifications (95.27% when excluding singletons). The highest success rate of congruent identifications was obtained with BCM at 0.053 threshold. The analysis of our barcode library together with public data resulted in 582 Barcode Index Numbers (BINs), 72.2% of which was found to be concordantly with morphology-based identifications. The discrepancies were divided in two groups: sequences from different species clustered in a single BIN and conspecific sequences divided in one more BINs. In Neighbour-Joining phenogram, 2,320 (83.0%) queries fromed 355 (62.4%) species-specific barcode clusters allowing their successful identification. 33 species showed paraphyletic and haplotype sharing. 62 cases are represented by deeply diverged lineages. This study suggest an increased species diversity in this region, highlighting taxonomic revision and conservation strategy for the cryptic complexes. -
