I Fellow Members: 1 ~ Our Workshop-Book Fair is almost here, We hope you are all planning on coming to the Chez-Vous ir. Shreveport, Louisiana, for August. 7 i 8, 1987. Plan a long weekend, do some research, attend the seminar and visit the racetrack or the rose garden •. THE GENIE is always looking for the information you, our mem bers, find important. Tell us at the meetings, drop a card, tele phone, let us know what yOu would like to see printed, what you would like us to include in next year's programs. We will be doing our planning session at the board meeting for November-so-some in put, please. The computers have made so much information available in a new form and in greater depth. I hope the reams of paper you get from these s.rvices have not overwhelmed you. Received a printout the other day on Thomas families in 1.790, 1800, l8l0-and 24 Henry Thom as's, and not one with a middle ~itial. However, it was interest ing, but somehow I found it too iJhpersonal-some of the intrigue of the search.was not there. ~ The census microfilm for Pennsylvania, 1830, 1840 and 1850 have been ordered for Shreve Memorial .. Library . They should be available t for your use this summer. Our next project may be a donation to the National Archives, or the 1910 Texas Soundex. Shreve Memorial LibI'- ary has asked for some help with doing an index for several local histories. We will give more deta.ils at a later date. Hope you all have a good summer, that your family reunions have new people in attendance, that YO,", find the right courthouse, that you find a cousin that is also interested in genealogy, that some relative remembers a bit of familyhi1ltory that provides a clue, that some marriage license shows up when someone is cleaning house, that some previously knownfamily;portrait is found-in other words, hope you find another generation. THE GENIE Third Quarter 1987 120 The 5th Louisiana Regiment of Infantry, Confederate States of America. was mustered in 1861, and sent to Virginia to fight under General T. J. JACKSON with the Army of Vir,ginia. The company fought bravely in many of the bloodiest battles of the war, incl~ding the Seven Days Battle, Gettysburg, Sharpsburg, Second Mana • ssas and Winchester. Today the 5th Louisiana is being represented in battle re-enactments by a group of men and boys organized in northwest Louisiana. Equipped and traveling at their own expense, this 5th Louisiana attends six to eight events a year in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and Virginia. They host two battles: Pleasant Hill in April and Harrisonburg in November. The first weekend in October they will participate in the 125th anniver sary observance of the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi. Another 125th anniver sary event on their schedule was the re-enactment of the Battle of Manassas in 1986. April 3-5 of this year they Were among 6000 troops at their re-enactment of the Battle of Shiloh, though at this event this group portrayed members of the 19th Infantry.

Future plans include participation in the anniversary of the Battle of Getty sburgin July 1988.

"North and South, Part II", a movie made for television in Novemb~r 1985, in cludes many battlefield scenes in which the unit participated during shooting on location at Natchez, Mississippi.

The unit emphasizes authenticity. They wear wool uniforms, leather accouter ments and shoes,aDd carry three band Enfield muskets. Drill is from Civil War period manuals, as is their tactics on the battlefield.

At every event the men camp, live and eat as nearly as possible as did troops during the Civil War. They sleep in authentic tents. They eat many of the same foods from hard tack and jerky to cornbread and saltpork. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * • The 5th Louisiana Regiment of Infantry, Confederate States of America, was mustered in 1861, and sent to Virginia to fight under General T. J. JACKSON with the Army of Vir.ginia.The company fought bravely in many of the bloodiest battles of the war, incl~ding the Seven Days Battle, Gettysburg, Sharpsburg, Second Mana • ssas and Winchester • • Today the 5th Louisiana is being represented in battle re-enactments by a group of men and boys organized in northwest Louisiana. Another 125t.h anniver sary event on their schedule was the re-enactment of the Battle of Man~ssas in i 1986. April 3-5 of this year they were among 6000 troops at their re-enactment of~the Battle of Shiloh, thougb at this event this group portrayed members of the U~ Infantry.

Future plans include participation in the anniversary of the Battle of Getty sburg in July 1988.

"North and South, Part II", a movie made for television in November 1985, in cludes many battlefield scenes in which the unit participated during shooting on location at Natchez, MissisSippi.

The unit emphasizes authenticity. They wear wool uniforms, leather accouter ments and shoes, eDd carry three band Enfield muskets. Drill is from Civil War period manuals, as is their tactics on the battlefield.

~ At every ev.ent the men camp, live and eat as nearly as possible as did troops during the Civil War. They sleep in authentic tents. They eat many of the same foods from hard tack and jerky to cornbread and saltpork. Attempts to secure rosters of the original 5th Louisiana companies from northwest Louisiana to publish at this time have been unsuccessful. The Louisi State Archives in Baton Rouge will furnish this desired information as soon as the move into its new facilities is completed. The information will be published when available. Captain Paul SUMMERLIN, of Shreveport, is in command of the present day re enactment unit, which represents Company E, 5th Louisiana Regiment of Infantry.

Since my father was an editor and publisher of a newspaper, I have always been aware of the wealth of information chronicled in old newspapers, but many family history researchers overlook this tool. Obituaries in old newspapers give not only dates and information as to the deceased, but usually give names and residences of surviving relatives. Accom panying information may even give names and residences of family an~ friends attending t~e funeral from out of the area. Neither of my own parents (born in 1882 and 1886) had been en tered in a register of births in their respective counties, but in both oases diligent searches turned up items in local newspapers annouricingtheir births. In this era, the announcements were inter~ sparsed with other local items and advertising on the front P4ge. A retirement story appearing on the front page of a community weekly newspaper of 60 years ago, contained the clue as to the vill age of birth in West Prussia of my husband's grandfather. That one long sought place name from that article was the key to tracing that family baok 250 years. .. Much.help on another family line came from a 1902. St. Louis Dispatch article reporting a 73r,d wedding anniversary. Golden and silver wedding anniversaries were also often reported and many pad accompanying photographs. One of my husband's cousins celebrated her 107th birthday last December 7th and has often been featured in area newspapers as she has attained various birth milestones. Don't overlook this possibility in your research, if a member was long-lived. This particular lady is amazingly active and mentally alert and her home town newspaper recently reported her having gone to an elementary school to talk to students on local history! City and small town newspapers, alike, report wedding activi ties. Names of the parents of both the bride and bridegroom are usually included, and members of the wedding party who are relat ives are often identified. An 1838 Hanover, Pennsylvani., news paper unearthed recently in my own research positively identified the parents of the bride and groom, refuted a published family his tory, but enabled that line to be easily taken back two gene~ations. A 1908, Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Gazette reported the 4eath of my great grandfather, and included a reprint of a lengthy autobio graphical article. A 1911, Des Moines (Iowa) Register_nd Leader had included a complete page featuring his father and tl\e seven· sons, with biographical material and pictures of each. (What a hey-day I have whenever I can get into newspaper archives at the Iowa State Historical Building in Des Moines) The old newspaper • files of originals were bound volumes of newsprint. The brittle THE GmaE 'lbird ().Iarter 1987 123 paper deteriorates t'apid~y.and, most early newspapers are now avail able on microfilm. Check the, State Arc)'dves, The State Historical Societies, the universities an'd'public libraries in the area of your, interest, for the list of newspapers available on microfilm. A sour~~ book of "Newspapers on Microfilm", published by the Library of Con • gress, is on the shelf at the Genealogy Department ,of Shreve Mem or~al Library in Shreveport, and is probably 'available at a major library near you. Information is arranged by states, then by city or town, with a key to the code where micI'Ofilm for a 'particular ,newspaper of a particular date is located • Check all possible sour ces in your search for a p~rticular newspaper that might be of help to you. DO not give up easily. I have even climbed ladders in back rooms of small tOwn newspapers, lugged down the old seven and eight column wide original bound files, and have become encrusted with dirt and grime from pages obviously untouched for years. Never have I come up 'empty-handed!

Ev~ if you should fail to find information you need for your ,research, yOu'll have fun reading the old items and front page ad vertising. One of the choicest items I found reports the sighting of the first airplane flying over the conununity "with no perceptible movement of the wings'.'. , Following is a listing'of some of the newspapers of this area available on microfilm on the first floor of Shreve Memorial Library in Shreveport and at the library of Louisiana State University in Shreveport. An accompanying article, nShreveport Newspapers at Lou isiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana", was contributed by Gloria L. KERNS, of Baton Rouge, a guest speaker at a recent meet ing of the Ark-La-Tex Genealogical Association. SHREVE MEMORIAL LIBRARY

Census records are one of the basic tools ofgenealogica1 re ., search. Beginners are somet'imes not aware of and "old timers" sometimes overlook 'the fact 'that census records are available otht::f than those taken in the United States Federal Census enumerations. Many colonial, territorial and state enumerations were made in addition to the every ten year enumerations. The contents of these reoords varies from tally count of the names of the heads of households to listing of every person residing in a household. When located and used with the Federal Censuses, these re cords are an invaluable aid .in tracing ancestors and may fill in many gaps found when using only the U. S. Censuses.

The age range of the soldier could be broader, particularly during the Civil War. Records for the wars listed above may be found in the National Archives with the exception of the wars prior to the American Revolution and for some records of the Civil War. Since there was no United States Government before the Revolutionary War, state, county and city records and archives must be searched for that period. .. Many Confederate records are on file in the National Archives, but one should check the State Archives in (1) the state where the ancestor lived, (2) the state where he enlisted, and (3) the state in which he resided after· the war. Many men lived in one state, enlisted in another, and after the war, moved to another. Pension applications by Confederate veterans and/or their widows were made to and filed in the state they were living in at the time the application was filed.. They will not be found in the National Archives. ... c ****************************** •

Third Quarter 1987 134 • EARLY RECORDS OF BOSSIER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH The Bossier First United M~thodist Church had its beginning in 1908, as a mission charge, when J. W. JAMIESON, a student at Centen ary College, arranged for a Sunday School and place to preach in an old store building north of the Illinois Central Railroad tracks. It later moved to an old school building on Broadway Street.

The church was officially organized in 1910. Mr. JAMIESON was appointed the first pastor. It continued as a student appointment until 1917, when J. M. BOYKIN became the first resident minister. Two lots at the corner of Ogilvie and Arcadia Street were do nated by W. B. MC CORMICK and his sister in 1913. The deeds to these two lots are recorded at the Bossier Parish Courthouse at Benton, Louisiana in Volume 47, page 558. Another lot was purchased from him. The first building, a parsonage, was built here in 1919. This was remodeled in 1939, and in 1943, was moved to 510 McCormick Street. In 1955, a new parsonage was built at 1618 Dudley Lane. The first sanctuary was built and paid for in 1921. This was added onto through the years until 1949, when a newly constructed sanctuary was opened for worship. The church remained at this location until July 1973, when it was relocated at 201 John Wesley Boulevard and Old Minden Road, near Interstate 20. The information which follows is contained in the first register book, which is entitled "The Church Register of the Bossier City, La. Methodist Episcopal Church, South." RHODES CEMETERY

This Caddo Parish, Louisiana cemetery is located in ·the woods back of an old field on Republican Church Road in SEQ section 17, town ship 18 N, Range 16 W. There is a dim road along the fence row in the woods to this old family cemetery. All the stones are down, the large slab tombs are broken. FAMILY HISTORY AND REUNIONS

Alex HALEY, author of ROOTS, is seeking stories for a new TV series. If you have a fascinating story of re-unit ing lost second, third, etc. cousins with a surprise twist,. perhaps in another country, submit a synopsis in a page or so. A "finder's fee" of $5,000 will be paid if a story is written and filmed for television. Send to Alex HALEY, P.u. Box 1828, Knoxville, TN 37901. In THE JOYS OF FAMILY REUNIONS, Alex HALEY writes the following: "Family reunions are vital in the education of the young. Consider what an African described for me as the 'cycle of the village.' He said that in every village there are three groups of people: those you can see; the ancestors who have passed on; and those waiting to be born. The child who, early in life, co~es to understand this cy cle tends to regard death less with terror and to view bir ths more with awe as the very miracle that perpetuates us. We know that even as we leave the earth, there are others with our blood, our history, who willlj'ollow." •••••••••••••••••••••••••••• • '!'HE GDaE Third Quarter 1987 144 UN I ON COUNTY ~ ARKANSAS MARR (AGE BONDS • 1829 - 1870 Richmond (Richard) R. Citations have been compiled directly from over 100 additional pub t lished sources, including complete books as well as articles appear ing in periodicals and books in this volume. It contains computer generated cross references for every accompanying passenger.
