Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park Was One of Japan's First National Parks Kirishima shrouded in cloud, the shimmering Kinkowan Bay, and the eversmouldering Sakurajima Volcano 20 Kirishima-Kinkowan Born in 1934 as Kirishima National Park, Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park was one of Japan's first national parks. The park can be broadly divided into northern and southern parts. The National Park northern Kirishima area is a mountainous zone featuring over 20 volcanoes of various sizes, which are also home to legends associated with Japanʼs creation myth, especially the descent of the Sun Goddess Amaterasu's grandson Ninigi-no-mikoto from the heavens. The southern Kinkowan Bay area is centered around Sakurajima Island, an active volcano which was once an island until a 1914 eruption connected it with the mainland. Sakurajima Island watches over the bay, sporadically emitting ash and creating a unique landscape that has become a symbol of the park. The area is home to many more still-active volcanoes and huge caldera craters formed by large eruptions over the millennia. The Kakuto, Kobayashi, Aira, and Ata caldera together form a line extending from north to south across southern Kyushu, Japanʼs main southern island. The volcanic area boasts many local specialties, including shochu liquor, black vinegar, green tea, and Satsuma sweet potato, and is dotted with onsen hot spring sites such as Kirishima Onsen Village, famous for its diverse range of hot spring types, and Ibusuki, featuring steamy sand onsen that utilize rising ground heat. ■Access Haneda Airport Kumamoto Hisatsu Line Prefecture Kagoshima Miyazaki Airport Prefecture Hisatsu Orange Railway Ebino Plateau Maruo Miyazaki Kagoshima Main Line Station Kyusyu Shinkansen Miyazaki Kagoshima Kirishima Jingu Station Bougainvillea Nippo Main Line Shigetomi Beach Prefecture Miyazaki Airport Expressway Tidal Flats, Kagoshima Aira City, Airport Kagoshima Prefecture National park area Major road Kagoshima Chuo Station Expressway Sakurajima Port Shinkansen Ibusuki Station Ogawa Waterfall JR Kagoshima Port Access route A p p r o x . Abstract The peopling of mainland Japan and Okinawa has been gradually unveiled in the recent years, but previous anthropological studies dealing people in the Amami islands, located between mainland Japan and Okinawa, were less informative because of the lack of genetic data. In this study, we collected DNAs from 104 subjects in two of the Amami islands, Amami-Oshima island and Kikai island, and analyzed the D-loop region of mtDNA, four Y-STRs and four autosomal nonsynonymous SNPs to clarify the genetic structure of the Amami islanders comparing with peoples in Okinawa, mainland Japan and other regions in East Asia.

Ser. 1 Spawning pattern of the Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus off southern Kyushu and Shikoku, southwestern Japan Ichiro Aoki, Tsukasa Murayama Ocean Research Institute, University of Tokyo, Nakano. Tokyo 164, Japan ABSTRACT: Distnbut~on,maturation and spawning of Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus in relation to the Kuroshio current are reported from an investigation off southern Kyushu and Shikoku, southwestern Japan, during the 1991 spawning season. Data were obtained from hydroacoustic surveys, measurement of gonadosomatic index and histological examination of oocyte maturity stage. Sardine shoals were distributed in both the coastal and the Kuroshio regions, but the maturity data showed a difference in spawning activity between the regions. Spawning activity was higher in the Kuroshio region than in the inshore region Spawning was concentrated within a short period of about 10 d in early March, although detectable In February and March Sardlne shoals did not occur In the Kuroshio region, except in early March. It was suggested that sardine were aggregated In inshore regions before spawnlng and that most of them moved offshore into the Kuroshio region to spawn and returned inshore after spawning. INTRODUCTION ing grounds were concentrated off southern Kyushu, also extending offshore to the main stream area of the The Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus stock Kuroshio current. In the 1990s the main spawning began to increase rapidly in the early 1970s from its grounds tended to return from west to east, but occur- low levels during the preceding 3 decades. Contract Report to the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council September 2011 Final Report Assessing the State of Japanese Coastal Fisheries and Sea Turtle Bycatch -Contract No.: 10-turtle-009 Name of Contractor: Sea Turtle Association of Japan Naoki Kamezaki Ph.D., Director Mail Address: Sea Turtle Association of Japan Naoki Kamezaki Nagao-motomachi 5-17-18, Hirakata, Osaka 573-0163 Japan Tel:+81-72-864-0335; fax:+81-72-864-0535 http:://www.umigame.org e-mail: [email protected] 1. Purpose The Sea Turtle Association of Japan (STAJ) receives over 500 reports annually regarding dead stranded sea turtles. Fishery bycatch is assumed to be the greatest source of mortality of stranded turtles in coastal Japan. In addition, STAJ conducts research and monitoring on sea turtles that are bycaught in pound nets in Kochi, Mie, and Kagoshima prefectures, where approximately 100 turtle bycatch are recorded at each pound net site (Ishihara et al., 2006; Iwamoto, 2006; Yamashita, 2007; Takeuchi, 2008). Of the monitored sites, the site in Mie prefecture has a very high mortality rate, suggesting that fishery bycatch cannot be ignored as a source of sea turtle mortality. Moreover, many of the fishers operate with various fishing gear and method depending on the season, leading to extensively varied operation size and type of fisheries across the country. As a result, determining the types of coastal fisheries that pose the greatest threat to turtle populations as well as the extent of bycatch is critical in recovering the population of loggerhead turtles, green turtles, hawksbill turtles, and leatherback turtles that utilize coastal Japan as their habitat.

GENETIC STRUCTURE OF HUMAN POPULATIONS III. DIFFERENTIATION OF ABO BLOOD GROUP GENE FREQUENCIES IN SMALL AREAS OF JAPAN* MASATOSHI NEI and YOKO IMAIZUMI Division of Genetics, National Institute of Radiological Sciences, Chiba, Japan Receivedii .xii.65 1.INTRODUCTION INa previous paper (Nei and Imaizumi, 1966a) it was shown that the local differentiation of ABO and MitT blood group gene frequencies in Japan has occurred largely by genetic random drift. In that investi- gation the population of Japan was divided into 45 different sub- populations or Prefectures (administrative units of Japan) the sizes of which were mostly one to two millions. However, the size of mating groups of neighbourhoods in Wright's (1946) sense appears to be much smaller than the sub-populations employed in the paper. It is, there- fore, expected that the gene frequencies are locally differentiated even within these sub-populations. We thus examined the degree of differ- entiation of ABO blood group gene frequencies in several small areas of Japan. 2.DIFFERENTIATION WITHIN PREFECTURES Thereare two Prefectures, in which the local variation of ABO blood group gene frequencies can be analysed. One is Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu Island and the other Tokushima Prefecture in Shikoku Island (cf fig. i in Nei and Imaizumi, 1966a). The data on the former were collected by Ono and Takagi (1942) and Makisumi (1958), and those on the latter by Katayama (i) and Minamibuchi (i). The areas of Kagoshima and Tokushima Prefectures are 9,104 km2 and 4,143 km2 respectively, both including several neighbouring small islands. The population sizes of these two Prefectures at the time of 1960 census are 1,962,998 and 847,279 respectively.
