Jesuit Catechisms for Soldiers (Seventeenth– Nineteenth Centuries): Changes and Continuities
journal of jesuit studies 4 (2017) 599-623 brill.com/jjs Jesuit Catechisms for Soldiers (Seventeenth– Nineteenth Centuries): Changes and Continuities Vincenzo Lavenia Università di Macerata, Italy [email protected] Abstract This paper proposes a literary journey through the manuals for soldiers written by Jesuits prior to the twentieth century. After briefly outlining the debut of these publications, at the hands of Antonio Possevino and of Thomas Sailly, who led the first permanent mission of military chaplains in Flanders, it will focus on three mo- ments: the second half of the seventeenth century, when the wars of religion wound down and we find the first manuals where, alongside the desire to impose discipline on armies, a patriotic rhetoric begins to be heard; the middle years of the eighteenth century, before the French Revolution, when, after the establishment of barracks and permanent chaplaincies, even texts aimed at the Christian soldier transposed the vocabulary of the Droit des gens in; finally, the nineteenth century, when the Society was restored and undertook the religious conversion of the soldiery against the perils of the modern world. In Belgium, the birth of a liberal Catholic regime supported a patriotically-toned missionary effort from Jesuit chaplains. Later, the mystique of the nation would affect the majority of texts aimed at combatants and their chaplains during the Great War. The Origins of Western Notation
Constantin Floros Modern music notation developed out of the so-called square notation and this out of the Latin neumes. The question of where these neumes came from has long been the subject of scholarly debate. As the author demonstrated in his three-volume Universale Neumenkunde published in German in 1970, there is a very close relationship between the Paleo-Byzantine notation and the Latin neumes. Although the study aroused a great deal of dispute, more recent studies have revealed that the relevance of the Neumenkunde re- mains essentially unchallenged after 40 years. Those path-breaking research results on the relationship of the Greek and Latin notational systems are now available for the first time in a completely revised and augmented English translation. “[Floros’] work, while not giving the last word in the domain of semiology, could today certainly again be the point of departure for productive develop- ments, both in the domain of Byzantine music as well as in the area of Gregorian chant.” (Luca Basilio Ricossa) The Origins of Western Notation Western Western Notation Revised and Translated by Neil Moran The Origins of of Origins The Constantin Floros is a professor emeritus of musicology at the University of Hamburg and a prolific writer on diverse subjects. He was the first researcher who systematically examined, compared and decoded the oldest Byzantine, Slavic and Latin neumatic notations. Neil K. Moran is the author of numerous studies on European cultural history in Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The Politics of Plainchant in Fin-De-Siècle France
The Politics of Plainchant in fin-de-siècle France This book tells three inter-related stories that radically alter our perspective on plainchant reform at the turn of the twentieth century and highlight the value of liturgical music history to our understanding of French government anticlericalism. It offers at once a new history of the rise of the Benedictines of Solesmes to official dominance over Catholic editions of plainchant worldwide, a new optic on the French liturgical publishing industry during a period of international crisis for the publication of plainchant notation, and an exploration of how, both despite and because of official hostility, French Catholics could bend Republican anticlericalism at the highest level to their own ends. The narrative relates how Auguste Pécoul, a former French diplomat and Benedictine novice, masterminded an undercover campaign to aid the Gregorian agenda of the Solesmes monks via French government intervention at the Vatican. His vehicle: trades unionists from within the book industry, whom he mobilized into nationalist protest against Vatican attempts to enshrine a single, contested, and German, version of the musical text as canon law. Yet the political scheming necessitated by Pécoul’s double involvement with Solesmes and the print unions almost spun out of control as his Benedictine contacts struggled with internal division and anticlerical persecution.
