He first published writings on opera, but after 1840 because of a fascination with religious music, especially chant, he devoted himself to the study of this genre, eventually undertaking his Dictionnaire Liturgique, Historique et Théorique de Plain-Chant et de Musique d’église au moyen age et dans les temps modernes (1854). For this work he commissioned Théodore Nisard, also known as Abbé Théodule Elzéar Xavier Normand, a Belgian organist and editor, to write a treatise on organ accompaniment of plain-chant. Nisard discusses basic rules of contrapuntal accompaniment of plain-chant according to theorists from earlier periods up to his present day. He includes numerous musical examples that provide much information about different manners and concepts for accompanying chant. A thorough history of accompaniment of chant has yet to be written, but that is not this document’s task. Rather, it intends to provide some insight into the practice of accompanying chant in Paris in the 19th century through a translation of a treatise by Théodore Nisard (1812-1888), written especially for Joseph Louis d’Ortigue’s Dictionnaire Liturgique, Historique et Théorique de Plain-Chant et de Musique d’église au moyen age et dans les temps modernes, (Liturgical, Historical, and Theoretical Dictionary of Plain-Chant and of Church Music from the Middle Ages to the Present Day), (Paris: Potier, 1854). Guillaume-Gabriel Nivers, in a 1689 treatise L’Art d’accompagner sur la basse continue pour l’orgue et le clavecin, which is considered “the first recorded codification of the French accompaniment practice that was developing in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries”,1 wrote: “In order to play the Church Plainchant, both simple and figured (ornamented), all of the same Rules apply with the Examples above; of which one can see the usage and practice in the Hymns of the second Livre d’Orgue.”2 But other accompaniment treatises of this period focus on figured bass for instrumental and choral accompaniment, with no mention of Gregorian chant. This led to a reform (even before Solesmes) and a return to historical sources, promoted by Louis-Felix Danjou (1812-1866), who founded the Review of Sacred Music, Popular and Traditional in 1845.3 The writings by Ortigue and Nisard stem from the same time. Théodore Nisard received his musical education at Douai and at the Cathedral of Cambrai after attending the seminary in Cambrai. He was ordained in 1835. He first worked at a Gymnasium (high school) in Enghein, then in 1842 became the second organist at St. Germain-des-Prés in Paris. While in Paris he was also employed to edit books of plain-chant by an ecclesiastical bookseller. He published many writings on liturgical music, as well as treatises on many composers such as Ockeghem, Palestrina, Lully, Rameau, and Pergolesi. His most important work was the revision and annotation of Jumilhac’s La science et la pratique du plain-chant (Paris, 1847). He eventually resigned his organist position and concentrated on his writings.4 The goal of this document is to provide an English translation of Théodore Nisard’s treatise on organ accompaniment of plain-chant written for Joseph Louis d’Ortigue’s dictionary. Those who prefer to respect Gregorian tonality as an inviolable principle cannot accept the capricious fantasies of modern art applied to an order of musical ideas which are incompatible with them. Those who do not know the requirements of this tonality and whose ears are saturated with note-against-note chords of hopeless clumsiness, and this under pretext of tonal necessity, ask themselves if this is truly the final word in what is called classic harmony suitable to plain-chant. Situated between these two pitfalls, Gregorian tonality cannot continue to fight for long: it may suffer, and, let us state it, despite the current work in favor of the restoration of plain-chant, despite the efforts made today to know the ancient art in all its details and set this restoration on some secure foundations, perhaps we will not manage to save plain-chant from the ruin with which it is threatened. Among the various and numerous causes which prepare the imminent ruin of liturgical chant, we have pointed out two relative to the accompaniment of plain-chant, which form the special topic of this article: they are much more serious than one

After briefly outlining the debut of these publications, at the hands of Antonio Possevino and of Thomas Sailly, who led the first permanent mission of military chaplains in Flanders, it will focus on three mo- ments: the second half of the seventeenth century, when the wars of religion wound down and we find the first manuals where, alongside the desire to impose discipline on armies, a patriotic rhetoric begins to be heard; the middle years of the eighteenth century, before the French Revolution, when, after the establishment of barracks and permanent chaplaincies, even texts aimed at the Christian soldier transposed the vocabulary of the Droit des gens in; finally, the nineteenth century, when the Society was restored and undertook the religious conversion of the soldiery against the perils of the modern world. In Belgium, the birth of a liberal Catholic regime supported a patriotically-toned missionary effort from Jesuit chaplains. Later, the mystique of the nation would affect the majority of texts aimed at combatants and their chaplains during the Great War.     4. THE INTERVALLIC SERIES How does one convey musical information to others? The most basic method is ostensive: you hum the melody to the other and say”Learn this!” Or you play it on an instrument. The other person picks it up by ear, or by actually playing it. Normally, however, musicians hand each other notated music to read. The information conveyed there would be “absolute” in the sense that note pitch, duration etc. will be unquestioned. An “E above middle C played for two beats” is nothing more or less than that particular musical event. There is another method, though, which while not incorporating any rhythmic elements, nonetheless serves to convey pitch information, and this is the intervallic method. Here, instead of describing music as e.g. “E, F, Ab,” one would say “E, then up a half step, up a minor third.” In other words, music as a vertical (chordal) or horizontal (melodic) distribution of notes is described in terms of intervals relative to a certain specified note. We will name that particular note the “1.” The intervallic method is central for the jazz vocabulary. It draws on historical theories and practices, particularly those of the cantus tradition which 1) pre-dates the imposition on Western ecclesiastical chant of scale theories based in the Ancient Greek science of harmonics, 2) observes and predicts actual melodic behavior, and 3) remains basic to pedagogy through the centuries. Central to cantus-tradition doctrine is the investment of melodic tones with structural functions which articulate modes as melodic archetypes; idiomelic antiphons are analyzed according to five melodic functions derived from formulaic psalmody in a framework modally conditioned by the qualitative and intervallic relationship of final and tenor. Medieval sources put forward this functional dyad as essential to modal cognition—sometimes as the basis of modal construction—through a widespread mnemonic I call the “Re-la, re-fa” Rule; these dyads are also embedded in the ninth- century Noanoeane and eleventh-century Primum quaerite melodic prototypes.

His music is known for its highly creative, even fantastical, approach to form, rhythm, timbre and mode. This dissertation explores the relationship between Alain’s innovative compositional voice and the trends of his time, using a multipronged analysis of one piece to situate Alain in the ideological and musical currents of interwar France. Variations sur un thème de Clément Jannequin (1937) is a set of variations on a sixteenth-century chanson. The theme is an almost verbatim transcription of a polyphonic Renaissance work arranged for piano and solo voice by Jean-Baptiste Weckerlin in the 1850s. Analysis shows that the changes Weckerlin made to the 1529 source better align his arrangement with ideal “French” qualities identified and promoted throughout nineteenth- century France in a widespread attempt to overturn the prevailing negative image of French music by identifying its distinctive and positive qualities. Written comments by Alain suggest that what attracted him about this chanson were both its authentic Renaissance characteristics and the notion of Frenchness portrayed in Weckerlin’s arrangement.

  • The Origins of Western Notation
    Constantin Floros Modern music notation developed out of the so-called square notation and this out of the Latin neumes. The question of where these neumes came from has long been the subject of scholarly debate. As the author demonstrated in his three-volume Universale Neumenkunde published in German in 1970, there is a very close relationship between the Paleo-Byzantine notation and the Latin neumes. Although the study aroused a great deal of dispute, more recent studies have revealed that the relevance of the Neumenkunde re- mains essentially unchallenged after 40 years.
