Linda Daniela Villegas Mercado March 2019 2 ABSTRACT In a Mexican political context permeated by drug-related violence, organised crime, and violence against women and feminised bodies, young women with different class and ethnic backgrounds are using hip-hop culture to denounce the government and create consciousness in relation to feminicide in the country. This thesis focuses on the work of the female rap collective Batallones Femeninos (Women’s Battalions) which originated in the frontier of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, and of Mare Advertencia Lirika, from the southern state of Oaxaca. Immersed in heavily male-dominated hip-hop culture, the female rappers in my research emerge as openly feminist artists and position their feminisms with reference to very particular geographical contexts, and class and ethnic backgrounds. In the case of Batallones, their feminism is informed by specific experiences in el barrio (the hood), of Juárez and Mexico City, the influence of autonomous Zapatismo, and their travels through the country.

Never before have we seen our movement so focused on bringing unity to the world—on playing unified, on working unified, on living unified. Across over 170 countries, our athletes challenged the world to listen to their revolutionary message: Break down barriers! Fight injustice and intolerance! Awaken to the gifts of the spirit in every human being! Play united so that the world might some day learn to live united. It was quite a year. In 2010, over 3 million athletes brought this message to villages, schools, universities, religious organizations, corporations and governments hundreds of times each day worldwide. These athletes included 4-year-olds leaving the walls of orphanages in Athens to become Young Athletes, marathoners pushing their bodies to the extremes of human potential, unified peers braving doubt to fight the R-word and hate speech in Colorado -- and more. It included resolute medical volunteers determined to provide care in the war zone of Sierra Leone, parents opening Special Olympics Camp Shriver in traumatized Haiti to reacquaint children with fun and hope, and outspoken athletes in Shanghai challenging those with newfound wealth to give. It included massive National and Regional Games in San Juan, Nebraska, Warsaw, Fuzhou and Damascus, together with the equally inspiring Unity Cup in Cape Town and the reopening of Special Olympics Afghanistan in Asia Pacific. In June, more than 600 leaders from across our Movement united in Marrakech, Morocco under the auspices of our courageous board member Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Amina for the first-ever Special Olympics Global Congress.

    SIU International Guitar Festival Dr. Dick Kelley – Director of the School of Music Artistic Director of the Festival – Dr. Isaac Lausell September 22nd & 23rd, October 27th & 28th Southern Illinois University Carbondale Message from Dr. Lausell In the fall of 2020 we would have hosted the 7th edition of the SIU Guitar Festival but our plans had to be postponed due to the pandemic. It was a very difficult year. We lost dear friends, our local businesses went through the roughest patch in their history and as a community we are still experiencing the aftermath of such an experience. In the midst of it all we pressed forward. The students worked hard and thrived whether it was by observing social distancing or through online instruction. We found ways to connect with the world and learn from each other thanks to remote learning resources and the various Zoom lectures and master classes. As we slowly start to regain normalcy and resume our activities it seems fitting that the guitar festival this year should be a homecoming festivity, something that also celebrates the connections our program has made with guitarists and musicians from all over the world. In honor to this we take on a new name and make our debut as the SIU International Guitar Festival. Thanks to the support of the SIU Foundation Grant and our visiting faculty from various institutions from domestic and abroad we will be enjoying concerts, lectures and master classes that explore the guitar from different perspectives and traditions. Who is this festival for? Anyone who loves guitar music! We have activities suitable for professional musicians, aspiring guitar students, weekend warriors or anybody that enjoys good music.
