Thanks to our donors, we invested over $14.5 million in 2008 in the cultural community. Those investments supported the operating needs of cultural organizations, cultural education, creative individuals, cultural projects, public art projects and capacity- building opportunities that included board development, risk management and audience-development initiatives. Our 50th year was also one of our most important ever, as we worked to develop a five-year roadmap for broadening the community’s engagement with culture and building long-term sustainability for the cultural sector. When ASC was founded in 1958, the Charlotte community was home to 200,000 citizens. Today, the greater Charlotte area is a global hub of commerce and home to nearly 900,000 residents, nine Fortune 500 companies, a vibrant center city and six bustling suburban towns. As our community has grown, so too has the cultural sector.

Ed., M.A. SUPERVISOR: Dr. Peter Walmsley NUMBER OF PAGES: ix, 334 11 Composing Themselves: Music, Morality, and Social Harmony in Women's Writing, 1740-1815 This interdisciplinary thesis examines rare poetic, didactic, fictional, and musical texts written by women in latter eighteenth-century Britain for instances of and resistance to contemporary perceptions of music as a form of social control. The opening chapter defines and historicizes the term "social harmony," by discussing neoclassical views of musical affect as productive of beneficial social behaviours and gender definition. By delineating canonical aesthetic theorists' influence upon women writers and musicians and assessing music's place in women's moral education, this chapter complicates the idea of separate public and private spheres of cultural achievement and introduces expanded views of women's agency as composers and performers. Next, the thesis appraises women's engagement with charity, musically enacted, through formal musical and textual analysis of hymns, songs, and benefit performances and publications. It marks the productive intersection of patronage and charity for women, who could articulate divergent responses to such idealized or stereotyped objects of pity as prostitutes and madwomen and benefit materially from so doing.

När det var jag som började vara ansvarig för uppdateringarna. Det allra tidigaste beviset jag kan finna på en lista som det med hundraprocentig säkerhet var jag som stod för är från december 2014. Så jag har inte riktigt gjort det i ett decennium än. Men jag är rätt säker på att det här är den absolut största uppdateringen jag har gjort. I alla fall är det, utan minsta tvivel, den största uppdateringen på så här kort tid, eftersom det inte ens var två månader sedan den förra listan. Vi hade nämligen förra månaden ett litet event. En karaokemakartävling som löpte över fyra veckor. Summa summarum: Över hundra nya låtar i listan. Plus ett gäng uppdaterade versioner av sånt vi redan hade. Själv har jag se’n sist i princip bara gjort One Piece och Nichijou-låtar, så där finns det diverse nytt att hämta. Högst takt höll Nea, som dessutom fokuserade mycket på nyare populära serier. A Mississippi Misadventure In the 1830s several members of Mecklenburg’s Cedar Grove Torrance family aimed to establish a plantation on new land in Mississippi. Easier said than done. We tend to forget there were two massive migrations of Scots-Irish in America. The first brought droves of people across the Atlantic, including Hugh Torrance who first farmed a square mile of land on McDowell Creek. In the 1800s many Scots-Irish descendants became the second wave, headed west following the prosperity of cot- ton, carrying their native feistiness, stubbornness, and family pride with them; some say they caused the west to be wild. By 1836 Hugh’s son James had grown the farm into a planta- tion he called Cedar Grove. It had well over 2,000 acres worked by 94 slaves. James’ older sons, Hugh and Frank, had reached manhood, and wanted a change. Farmland for sale in Mecklen- burg was scarce; it was nearly impossible to buy adjacent plots to splice into a farm.
