Allerdings variiert die Marktdurchdringung der Handelsmarken je nach Region dabei erheblich. Beispielsweise belegen die Zahlen der im Jahr 2014 von Innova Market Insights beobachteten Produktneueinführungen, dass diese für Westeuropa bei 25,4 % lagen, während die Marktdurchdringung der Eigenmarken des Handels in Asien einen deutlich niedrigeren Wert von 8,4 % erreichte. Hier erweist sich die ausgeprägte Markentreue in den Schwellenmärkten als Heraus forderung für die Handelsmarken, sodass eine Konsolidierung in den entwickelten Märkten von entscheidender Bedeutung ist. Dadurch bekommen Innovationen wiederum eine entscheidende Rolle. Traditionell ist der Anteil der Eigenmarken des Handels an Grundnahrungs­ produkten wie Gemüse oder Fleisch, aber auch an Convenience­Produkten wie Fertiggerichten, am höchsten. Der Einzelhandel dringt mit seinen Eigen­ marken mittlerweile aber auch in Bereiche wie Schokolade vor, die aufgrund ihrer starken Markenbindung bislang als eher schwierig für den Handel galten. Weitere Wachstumsmöglichkeiten für die Eigenmarken bieten Produkt­ neuentwicklungen im Premium­Bereich, der eine zunehmende Vielfalt an Gourmet­Produktlinien aufweist. Innova Market Insights meldete für 2014 im Vergleich zum Vorjahr eine Zunahme von 32 % des Handelsmarkenanteils an den Produktneueinführungen weltweit im Premium­ und Genuss­Bereich. Die führenden Artikelgruppen im Jahre 2014 waren hier Schokolade (12 %), Fleischprodukte (8 %) und süßes Kleingebäck (4 %). For example in 2014, according to new product launch data tracked by Innova Market Insights, private label penetration is high in West Europe at 25.4 %, and much lower in Asia at 8.4 %. Brand loyalty in emerging markets is proving to be a challenge for private label development, so consolidation in developed markets is vital, in which innovation plays a pivotal role. Traditionally, private label has been strongest in staple categories, such as vegetables and meat products, and also in convenience categories like ready meals. Retailers are now also pushing private label in categories that were supposed to be more difficult due to brand loyalty, like chocolate. Another growth area for private label is premium new product development, with more gourmet product lines available across the board. Innova Market Insights reported a 32 % increase in global premium and indulgent private label product launch activity (2014 vs. 2013). The leading sub-categories in 2014 for such activity were chocolate (12 %), meat products (8 %) and sweet biscuits/cookies (4 %). The numbers speak for themselves; consumption of meat-substitutes in the Netherlands increased 17% in 2017 as opposed to the year before, while at the same time retail sales of meat dropped with 1,7% (Knippenberg. 2018). The same goes for plant-based dairy substitutes, of which sales have increased with 6,6% over the same period, while dairy consumption has gone down 1,3%. People are adopting a vegan diet for various reasons, ranging from health associated to ethically based ones. Important influencers, like world famous musicians Beyoncé and Drake and world famous chefs Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, are promoting a vegan diet on their social media and thereby spreading the word about it. Companies are adapting to this growing trend, to make sure they hop on the bandwagon as soon as possible, like Ben & Jerry’s, who have recently released three non-dairy flavors ice creams alongside their regular flavors. Restaurant chains are of course also adapting to this development, like Vapiano, who have added a number of vegan options to their otherwise dairy- and meat-heavy menu, just like both Domino’s Pizza and New York Pizza are now selling multiple vegan pizza varieties.

We also wanted to dig a bit deeper into the subject matter and so, in addition to the classic questions regarding nutri- tion and food purchases, we asked each participant about their attitudes on environmental protection, health, etc. This is how we found out that, for example, 86 % of European vegans said they consider sustainability and environmental protection very important when purcha- sing food – 13 % more than the people who do not eat a purely plant-based diet.

The organisation went on to claim, ‘Research conducted by Roy Morgan has found…the trend in vegetarian eating continues to [be growing], with 2.5 million people in Australia (12.1 percent of the population) now eating all or almost all vegetarian.
