THE TIME 100 – In this week’s issue, TIME reveals its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. TIME managing editor writes, “The TIME 100 is not about the influence of power but the power of influence. Some of the people you’ll encounter on this list are influential in the traditional sense... But we also seek out people whose ideas and actions are revolutionizing their fields and transforming lives.”

This year’s list is divided into four subsections: Leaders, Thinkers, Artists and Heroes.

The TIME 100 features often-surprising pairings of the influentials and the guest contributors TIME selects to write about them. This year’s list includes: Ted Nugent on Sarah Palin , on , on Oprah, Sarah Palin on Glenn Beck, on , David Remnick on , Sean “Diddy” Combs on Ashton Kutcher , on Prince , on and more.

- The list includes 47 international figures from 23 countries, more than any previous year’s TIME 100

- The winner of the TIME.com TIME 100 poll is Iranian opposition leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi , who received more than 800,000 votes and is in the Heroes section of the list.

Highlights from the TIME 100 Profiles: Ted Nugent on Sarah Palin: “If Sarah Palin played a loud, grinding instrument, she would be in my band. The independent patriotic spirit, attitude and soul of our forefathers are alive and well in Sarah. In the way she lives, what she says and how she dedicates herself to make America better in these interesting times, she represents the good, while exposing the bad and ugly.”

Sarah Palin on Glenn Beck : “Even his critics (whom he annihilates in ratings) have to admire his amazing ability to galvanize everyday Americans to better themselves and peacefully engage their government. Though he sometimes dismisses himself as an aw-shucks guy or just a “rodeo clown,” he’s really an inspiring patriot who was once at the bottom but now makes a much needed difference from the very, very top.”

Bono on President Clinton : “Where I’m from, he’s a mythic figure. Ditto Haiti, ditto Africa—a huge crowd puller wherever he goes. Rock stars can’t be President (lucky for you), but we’ve all got reason to be thankful that Presidents can be rock stars.”

Mitt Romney on Scott Brown : “If ever there was a person who willed himself to win, it was Scott. In the early going, when the media and even his own party had given up on him, Scott never gave up on himself.”

Phil Donahue on : “There is no match for you in media history. You are not only hot; you are cool: the Dream Girl for millions of ambitious young women whom you’ve inspired all over the world. You are a once-in-a-century woman. I salute you.”

Sean “Diddy” Combs on Ashton Kutcher : “Most of us want to make as much money as we can, but Ashton, 32, is out to make the world a better place. He is smart—smart enough to leave Punk’d when he could still be making money at it. He has to have a heart in what he does. What he and Demi do with is a good example. Most people use it to promote themselves, but he uses Twitter to connect, to strike up conversations, to send positive messages to the millions of people who read his words. This guy will show us the future. And it’s gonna be a blast.”

Betty White on Sandra Bullock: “She’s been labeled America’s Sweetheart, which sounds soft and sweet. Sandra is both of those things, but she also has a strength of her own. She never lets a scene get away from her. She’s never just there going through her paces. And you can’t take your eyes off of her. America, you wish she were your sweetheart.”

Donatella Versace on Jet Li: The first time my friend Jet Li and I talked about his One Foundation, which he began to assist with disaster-relief efforts in China and beyond. He was so passionate that I felt the only thing for me to do was to help....Jet, 46, is very charming, with a great smile—much more delicate than he appears in films like Hero and Romeo Must Die. He calls me his sister, as he likes to say we are now all part of one big family.

Robert De Niro on Ben Stiller : “Every comedian I know is a pain in the ass. I’ve done movies with some of the best, and offscreen I enjoy their a lot. Everything is played for laughs; nothing is sacred; it’s all about them. But it’s fun, so you live with their mishegoss . Ben Stiller, whom I got to know on Meet the Parents, is different.”

Usher on Prince : “I think I was about 8 or 9 when I saw Purple Rain. I was interested in music and trying to find a model. It was Michael, or it was Prince. He had an attitude, a rawness that Michael didn’t have. He was not urban, but he was our version of what cool could be. You look at an icon like James Dean or Steve McQueen—they represent a certain energy, a certain poise. That’s what Prince has.... Being in his presence is surreal. His energy is just so fly. He is so poised. He is the s___. He is what he called a ‘Sexy M.F.’”

Cyndi Lauper on Lady Gaga : “When I see somebody like Gaga, I sit back in admiration. I’m inspired to pick up the torch again myself. I did an interview with her once, and she showed up with a sculpture on her head. I thought, How awesome. Being around her, I felt like the dust was shaken off of me. I find it very comforting to sit next to somebody and not have to worry that I look like the freak. She isn’t a pop act, she is a performance artist. She herself is the art. She is the sculpture.”

Other interesting pairings include: General David Petraeus on General Stanley McChrystal, on Serena Williams, on Nancy Pelosi, Alice Waters on Michael Pollan, Donna Karan on Zaha Hadid, George Lopez on Conan O’Brien, Oliver Stone on , on Neill Blomkamp, Stephen Daldry on , Victoria Beckham on Marc Jacobs, Olivia Newton-John on , on Neil Patrick Harris and Stevie Nicks on .
