In imperial days the area fell under the category of balabbat land before it was converted into a madbet of the Crown Prince. After its 'discovery' it was declared a protected forest. Anabe is some 30 kms to the west of the town of Gerba, which is on the Kombolcha-Bati road. Until recently the rough road from Gerba was completed only up to the market town of Adame, from which it took three hours' walk to the forest. A road built by local people -- with European Union funding now makes the forest accessible in a four-wheel drive vehicle.

More than 1,000 years ago, coffee was a goatherd in Ethiopia southwestern highlands, David Beatty discovered the Ethiopian province where they first blossom Kaffa gave its name to coffee. Nobody is sure, exactly how coffee originally discovered as a beverage plant; it believed that its cultivation and use began as early as the 9th century in Ethiopia. It cultivated Yemen earlier, around AD 575. While, it originated in Ethiopia, from where it traveled to the Yemen about 600 years ago, and from Arabia began its journey around the world. Among the many legends, Kaldi, an Abyssinian goatherd, who lived around AD 850 found the origin of coffee. It is vital to the cultural and socio-economic life of Ethiopians and contributes 25%-30% of the country's foreign exchange, half of GDP, 90% of exports, 85% of total employments in the country and part of the culture; about 50 % of the produced coffee is consumed domestically. The general objective of the review is to understand coffee production and marketing value chain system in Ethiopia and specific objective is to revise coffee production and marketing value chain, volume of production, domestic and international marketing and consumption level.

    DRMTechnical Periodic Monitoring Report Working 2016 Humanitarian Requirements Document – Ethiopia Group Covering 1 Jan to 31 Dec 2016 Prepared by Clusters and NDRMC Introduction The El Niño global climactic event significantly affected the 2015 meher/summer rains on the heels of failed belg/ spring rains in 2015, driving food insecurity, malnutrition and serious water shortages in many parts of the country. The Government and humanitarian partners issued a joint 2016 Humanitarian Requirements Document (HRD) in December 2015 requesting US$1.4 billion to assist 10.2 million people with food, health and nutrition, water, agriculture, shelter and non-food items, protection and emergency education responses. Following the delay and erratic performance of the belg/spring rains in 2016, a Prioritization Statement was issued in May 2016 with updated humanitarian requirements in nutrition (MAM), agriculture, shelter and non-food items and education.The Mid-Year Review of the HRD identified 9.7 million beneficiaries and updated the funding requirements to $1.2 billion. The 2016 HRD is 69 per cent funded, with contributions of $1.08 billion from international donors and the Government of Ethiopia (including carry-over resources from 2015). Under the leadership of the Government of Ethiopia delivery of life-saving and life- sustaining humanitarian assistance continues across the sectors. However, effective humanitarian response was challenged by shortage of resources, limited logistical capacities and associated delays, and weak real-time information management. This Periodic Monitoring Report (PMR) provides a summary of the cluster financial inputs against outputs and achievements against cluster objectives using secured funding since the launch of the 2016 HRD.

One of the major achievements of the Flora is having a complete account of all the Mono­ cotyledons. These are found in Volumes 6 (1997 – all monocots except the grasses) and 7 (1995 – the grasses) of the Flora. One of the main aims of publishing the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea was to stimulate further research in the region. This challenge was taken by the authors (with important input also from Odd E. Stabbetorp) in 2003 when the first edition of ‘Flowers of Ethiopia and Eritrea: Aloes and other Lilies’ was published (a book now out of print). The project was supported through the NUFU (Norwegian Council for Higher Education’s Programme for Development Research and Education) funded Project of the University of Oslo, Department of Biology, and Addis Ababa University, National Herbarium in the Biology Department. What you have at hand is a second updated version of ‘Flowers of Ethiopia and Eritrea: Aloes and other Lilies’.

    Africa Development, Vol. XXXI, No. 2, 2006, pp. 243–260 © Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa, 2006 (ISSN 0850-3907) Decentralisation as Ethnic Closure, with Special Reference to a Declining Negotiated Access to Natural Resources in Western Ethiopia Dereje Feyissa* Abstract Between the Anywaa and the Nuer, the two neighbouring people in the Gambela regional state in western Ethiopia, the Anywaa are better endowed with access to and control over vital natural resources. Occupying an economic fringe, the Nuer have used various strategies to access these resources. After their initial violent expansion into Anywaa territories, the Nuer have largely reoriented their strategy to peaceful means: social networking and the instrumentalisation of inter-ethnic exchanges. This was due to their capacity to create a shared cultural space centring on the notion of the first-comer to regulate entitlement issues. In this paper, I explore the process of local-level integration and how decentralisa- tion and the new political order have shifted the mode of inter-ethnic relations from compromise and negotiation to competition and confrontation. The paper argues that this is so partly because, despite the decentralisation rhetoric, the state maintains a hegemonic status by claiming ultimate ownership over the vital means of production—the land. Drawing on the experience of the Gambela regional state, the paper argues that decentralisation in Ethiopia has not brought its intended result—local empowerment. Instead, decentralisation is experienced in the form of elite political competition, while seriously undermining local forms of integration. Above all, decentralisation and the new political order have meant the growing relevance of extra-local bases of entitlement over natu- ral resources.
