6 Another Successful Nostalgia Night Celebration

On July 6, 2014 more than 275 guests and volunteers gathered together for the 11th annual Nostalgia Night Celebration honouring five of the longest standing Japanese Cultural Arts groups who have served our Japanese Canadian Community and the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. The five honourees, Bunka Shishu, Ikenobo Ikebana Society of Toronto, Sogetsu Ikebana Toronto East Branch, Shodo - Japanese Calligraphy, and Sumi-e, more than exemplify the spirit of the Heritage Pioneer Award. This award has been given annually to those whose work has contributed towards the cultural and social development and well-being of our community over the years. Each of these group’s classes have brought many people from within and beyond our community together in the pursuit of these specialized arts. They have helped raise the understanding and appreciation of these arts, developed the skills of many students, and helped to develop friendships and connections that have added to the strength of our community. We are also most fortunate that they host annual exhibits featuring juried work with some of the groups bringing in work from across the country. Guests had an opportunity to view displays of each of these groups, talking with the instructors and students, and finding out information about their classes. They observed volunteers from the Heritage Committee’s Archiving team in action as they assessed, catalogued, and coded information about artefacts and photos that have been collected through donations over the years. And they had time to just catch up with family and friends!! And of course, there was the delicious Japanese Canadian food!! Ah yes, where else can you enjoy the home-cooking that reminds you of family meals and gatherings where the specialty dishes were served. So many tasty dishes prepared by a wonderful group of volunteers who worked for two days preparing and cooking the meal. It is only at gatherings like this where you have the opportunity to have such a wide assortment of truly Japanese Canadian food and then reminisce about the Japanese brown noodle chow mein sandwiches our mom’s packed for our lunch the next day!! Yes, Nostalgia Night 2014 was a great celebration and we look forward to our next one in 2015!! We hope you will circle the date on your calendars as soon as it is announced and join us as we continue to celebrate and honour members of our Japanese Canadian community.
