Dear Friends,

As I write about this year’s Kol Nidre appeal, the summer winds are still balmy and cool and I am reluctant to turn my eyes to the fall. It is difficult to believe that a whole year has passed since my last appeal to you. Nevertheless I am duty bound to remind you that your donations are absolutely indispensable. They comprise a significant portion of the funds that we use to keep our synagogue open and running. Your donations allow us to continue to operate as a conservative, egalitarian congregation. Your donations help us to pay for our wonderful clergy who are so inspirational particularly at this time of year. Your donations help us to pay for the study of Torah and Mishnah throughout the year, Jewish education for our children, interfaith events, cultural events, swimming programs and more. Your donations help pay for our devoted staff of employees who keep our aged building running and without whom we could not function.

This past year has been a roller-coaster ride for those of us who are intimately involved in the maintenance and operation of our synagogue. At times during the year I felt like Pharaoh at the time of the exodus. We have endured floods due to faulty grease traps, sewer back-ups and broken pipes. We have endured fire from an exploding fixture ballast and broken circuit breaker. We have endured the loss of our first born (figuratively) in the retirement of our long time beloved caretaker and keeper of the secrets of mechanical systems, Anderson Waithe. I have heard my inner voice saying “Let my synagogue go!” But like our ancestors we must persevere. We can only persevere with your help. Please remember this when you consider your donation. (continued) thoughts from EMJC PRESIDENT MICHAEL F. SCHWARTZ

Part of my role as President of our congregation is to see first-hand the life cycle of our community. During the past year, I have paid shiva calls and have attended bar and bat mitzvahs. I have seen the great resilience and spirit of our growing community. I am asking you to show your support for our community by making your Kol Nidre donation even more generous than last year (or to give something even if for the first time) while keeping in mind that you are investing this money in our ritual home, a place where you can come to pray, learn, play, and celebrate your children and your grandchildren on the occasion of their simchas. This is an appropriate time of year for you to consider what this synagogue means to you. I hope and pray that you will consider it to be worthy of your donations which we so desperately need.

Donations may be paid with a credit card or may be spread out throughout the year. Sustaining support with monthly donations is strongly encouraged ($18, $50, $100 or more). We would greatly appreciate any amount that you can give via www.emjc.org, mailing a check, stopping by our office or calling 718-338-3800.

Thank you very much for your devotion to the East Midwood Jewish Center, still the leading Conservative Egalitarian synagogue in Brooklyn.

All of us at EMJC wish you and your family a happy, healthy, safe and enjoyable 5779,

Michael F. Schwartz thoughts from RABBI MATT CARL

Dear Congregation,

There is a widely-practiced custom of eating a "new fruit" on the second night of Rosh Hashana. The practice exists partially as a solution to an otherwise challenging problem in halakha but now also exists outside the Jewish legal realm, having become one of the rituals associated with the holiday.

I love what we call this practice in English, "a new fruit". There is, of course, nothing new about the fruit. Whatever fruit it is, it has been around for a while (I suppose the genetic modification of organisms so common today could render this no longer true - it is actually now possible that a fruit you eat on the first night of 5779 will actually be a thing that didn't exist this year. Nevertheless) It's usually not even a new fruit for you: if we had to pick fruits we've never eaten before, we'd run out after a few years. Instead, it is usually understood to mean a fruit you haven't eaten this season.

As we approach the end of summer, we usually regard corn and apples and the other staples of the period not as new at all, but as familiar markers of this time of year. In a world with fruit available from all around the world at all times of year, we likely don't remember the first peach of the season or even the first outdoor barbecue, for that matter.

(continued) thoughts from RABBI MATT CARL

That's why it's so wonderful that our Sages, of blessed memory, (Hazal) solved a legal problem by encouraging people to eat a new fruit on the second night of Rosh Hashana. Regardless of whether it was their intention, they instituted a practice that gets us to spend time on our holiday of renewal reminding ourselves of what is new.

We have to take stock of what we did in the previous year, if we're going to figure out how to do something different this year. We have to know what is old if we want to create something new. If this is necessary, but possible, with fruit, how much the more so with our other actions. The Psalmist wrote "those who sow seeds in tears will reap in joy". Our seeds are our past. Now is the time to inspect them, to find in them the kernel of good to sow, perhaps even tearfully, on Rosh Hashana. In making of them something new, they can bear fruit in the year to come. May it be fruit that is nourishing, sweet... and new!

L'shana Tova,

Rabbi Matt Carl thoughts from EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WAYNE ROSENFELD

Dear Members of EMJC,

Let me start off by saying that I love coming to work every day. Those words haven’t left my lips in a very long time. Every day at EMJC is full of purpose and when each day is done, I can cross something off of my list. My single goal is to restore our beautiful and majestic synagogue to its former glory not just in building structure but to also have our seats filled every Saturday. Some may say that I am naive; some may say that our time has passed….I say that anything is possible if we work together for a common goal. That goal is in 6 short years to have our building shine from top to bottom like it once did and in 6 short years to have 400 memberships amongst our midst.

Why 6 years you might ask? In 6 years, we will be 100 years young and if we all work together, we will have a party like no one has seen before. In order to meet these lofty goals, we need everyone’s help both with your time and money. We need volunteers to work within the Synagogue, to join committees, to want to be elected to a seat on the Board of Trustees…for we have a lot of work to do in the next 6 years. Please join me in our mission.

Now let me tell you about what we have been doing as of late. The month of August saw many mechanical breakdowns. The pool needed a lot of repair and was closed for approx. 7 days out of the month.

(continued) thoughts from EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WAYNE ROSENFELD

We had issues with our plumbing system and saw 3 floods in 6 days. We also had a small and brief fire in an electrical system in our ceiling in the lobby. August was not fun, but we overcame with the help of many.

This summer we had night swimming for our members and community for the first time in a while. We saw the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel come back not once but twice to film at our Synagogue. We went to the Ball Park to watch a Cyclones game. We had two successful wine and painting parties. We went water rafting and we had a wedding in our building for the first time in a long time. The first of many to come. We also became the home for the 70th Police Precinct’s Community Meetings.

The East Midwood Jewish Center is strong and alive and as we approach the High Holidays, I ask that you support your second home to the best of your ability, so we may forge forward and look towards our 100th anniversary.

Shanah Tovah,

Wayne Rosenfeld Executive Director JULY/AUGUST PHOTO CORNER
