Chatas ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe a great deal of thanks to Professor Chris Pye, without whom this thesis likely would not have been possible and unquestionably would not have been as rewarding. I am immensely grateful for his thoughtful feedback, valuable guidance, and unending support, as well as his willingness to both challenge and encourage me at every turn. I would also like to thank my friends for letting me ramble to them about Shakespeare and for always believing in me, even—and especially—when I doubted myself. And finally, to my parents and brother, who inspire me and whose support means more to me than I can express: thank you for everything. S. Chatas INTRODUCTION: THE WORLD ON THE STAGE The Renaissance was a time marked by a fascination with subjectivity and inner life. Public laws and social norms were intimately linked to the personal, interior sphere and conceptions of self. Primogeniture weighed on relationships between brothers and between fathers and sons;1 official and unwritten rules requiring clothing to align with class and gender pervaded individual choices and understandings of gender (and reflected the lack of scientific understanding of sexual difference);2 there were even laws that regulated public lamentation.3 Of course, the exchange between these external social structures and rules and the inner world did not flow in only one direction.

The two phenomena under scrutiny, K\SHUXQGHUVWDQGLQJ and PLVXQGHUVWDQGLQJ, categorize as responsive conversational turns as they connect to a previously made utterance. Whereas hyper-understanding revolves around a speaker’s ability to exploit potential weak spots in a previous speaker’s utterance by playfully echoing that utterance while simultaneously reversing the initially intended interpretation, misunderstanding involves a genuine misinterpretation of a previous utterance by a character in the fictional world. Both cases, however, hinge on the differentiation of viewpoints, yielding a layered discourse representation. A corpus study based on the British television series %ODFNDGGHU reveals which pivot elements can serve as a trigger for hyper- and misunderstanding. Common to all instances, it is argued, is a mechanism ofILJXUHJURXQG UHYHUVDO. Key words: interactional humor, hyper-understanding, misunderstanding, layering, mental spaces, figure-ground reversal 2 ,QWURGXFWLRQ Recent studies in pragmatics (see e.g. Attardo 2003) have shown a renewed interest in humor as a valuable topic of interdisciplinary research. More specifically, these studies have extended the traditional focus of humor research on jokes to include longer narrative texts (Attardo 2001a, Triezenberg 2004) and conversational data (Boxer and Cortés-Conde 1997, Hay 2001, Kotthoff 2003, Norrick 2003, Antonopoulou and Sifianou 2003, Archakis and Tsakona 2005). New data from conversation analysis, text linguistics and discourse psychology present significant challenges to linguistic humor theories like the General Theory of Verbal Humor (Attardo 1994, 2001a), and call for (sometimes major) revisions.

The Great Tragedies What is drama? Drama can be defined in countless ways. However, a definition of drama that incorporates the three key terms-imitative action, stage and audience- is a convincing one. Drama is nothing but a factual/fictitious imitative action that could be enacted on stage before an audience. Drama is one of the earliest genres of literature. Every human being has an inherent impulse either to pretend he/she is someone or something else or to see such a pretention. For instance, in a classroom when the teacher asks the student why was he late to the class, the student pretends that he was late because of a seriously genuine reason. In some cases the teacher also pretends and excuses the student taking his reason for late coming seriously. Students of the entire class were enjoying these pretentions. Quite often in our lives, we enact more dramas than encountering real life situations.

Finding himself trapped in the trenches with another "big push" planned, his concern is to avoid being sent over the top to certain death. The show thus chronicles Blackadder's attempts to escape the trenches through various schemes, most of which fail due to bad fortune, misunderstandings and the general incompetence of his comrades.

  • Investigation of the Transitivity System Operating Under the Systematic Functional Grammar (SFG) Model to Reveal the Differentia
================================================================== Language in India www.languageinindia.comISSN 1930-2940 Vol. 18:6 June 2018 India’s Higher Education Authority UGC Approved List of Journals Serial Number 49042 ================================================================ Investigation of the Transitivity System Operating under the Systematic Functional Grammar (SFG) Model to Reveal the Differential Impact of the Prophecies in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth Subhanan Mandal ===================================================================== Abstract The paper aims to study the Transitivity System under the Systematic Functional Grammar of CDA operating in the selected discursive sections of the tragic playMacbeth by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s plays occupy the peak among the plays ever written in the history of English Language and Literature. The style, tone, and way of constructing the discourse reveal Shakespeare’s mastery and command over the language. The representation of the Elizabethan era in his writings through the brilliant characters in his plays exhibit the capacity of the man to go deep into human psyche. He leaves much for the audience for their imaginative exploration and thereby enhances the curiosity about the fate of the play. Critics argue that Shakespeare is ‘alive for our time, and not restricted to his own’. The use of the Transitivity system under Systematic Functional Grammar (SFG) tool of CDA will enable to bring out a theory of language in use in the discourse based on motivation, purpose and choice. The characters in the play are diverse and unique in their psychological motives. This is reflected in their dialogues with the choice of language in varying situations and circumstances. The analysis of the transitivity system occurring in the discourse through the dialogues of the major characters of the play will enable to bring out an insight into the ideational and interpersonal functions.
