Ten years ago, when SST Records spun at the creative center of rock music, founder Greg Ginn was living with six other people in a one-room rehearsal studio. SST music was whipping like a sonic cyclone through every college campus in the country. SST bands criss-crossed the nation, luring young people away from arenas and corporate rock like no other force since the dawn of punk. But Greg Ginn had no shower and no car. He lived on a few thousand dollars a year, and relied on public transportation. "The reality is not only different, it's extremely, shockingly different than what people imagine," Ginn said. "We basically had one place where we rehearsed and lived and worked." SST, based in the Los Angeles suburb of Los Alamitos, is the quintessential in- dependent record label. For 17 years it has existed squarely outside the corporate rock industry, releasing music and spoken-word performances by artists who are not much interested in making money. When an SST band grows restless for earnings or for broader success, it simply leaves the label. Founded in 1978 in Hermosa Beach, Calif., SST Records has arguably produced more great rock bands than any other label of its era. Black Flag, fast, loud and socially aware, was probably the world's first hardcore punk band. Sonic Youth, a blend of white noise and pop, is a contender for best alternative-rock band ever. -

Glossary Glossary Albedo A measure of an object’s reflectivity. A pure white reflecting surface has an albedo of 1.0 (100%). A pitch-black, nonreflecting surface has an albedo of 0.0. The Moon is a fairly dark object with a combined albedo of 0.07 (reflecting 7% of the sunlight that falls upon it). The albedo range of the lunar maria is between 0.05 and 0.08. The brighter highlands have an albedo range from 0.09 to 0.15. Anorthosite Rocks rich in the mineral feldspar, making up much of the Moon’s bright highland regions. Aperture The diameter of a telescope’s objective lens or primary mirror. Apogee The point in the Moon’s orbit where it is furthest from the Earth. At apogee, the Moon can reach a maximum distance of 406,700 km from the Earth. Apollo The manned lunar program of the United States. Between July 1969 and December 1972, six Apollo missions landed on the Moon, allowing a total of 12 astronauts to explore its surface. Asteroid A minor planet. A large solid body of rock in orbit around the Sun. Banded crater A crater that displays dusky linear tracts on its inner walls and/or floor. 250 Basalt A dark, fine-grained volcanic rock, low in silicon, with a low viscosity. Basaltic material fills many of the Moon’s major basins, especially on the near side. Glossary Basin A very large circular impact structure (usually comprising multiple concentric rings) that usually displays some degree of flooding with lava. The largest and most conspicuous lava- flooded basins on the Moon are found on the near side, and most are filled to their outer edges with mare basalts. -

59 Terrestrial Isopods from the Hawaiian Islands (Isopoda: Oniscidea)1 STEFANO TAITI (Centro di Studio per la Faunistica ed Ecologia Tropicali del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Via Romana 17, 50125 Firenze, Italy) and FRANCIS G. HOWARTH (Hawaii Biological Survey, Bishop Museum, PO Box 19000, Honolulu, Hawaii 96817, USA) The following are notable new distribution records for terrestrial isopods in Hawaii. Four species are newly recorded from the state, and many new island records are given for other species, especially for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, where only one species (Porcellionides pruinosus [Brandt]) was previously known. All included records are based on specimens deposited in Bishop Museum. Taiti & Ferrara (1991) presented new distribution records and taxonomic information on 27 species and provided an overview of the terrestrial isopod fauna of the Hawaiian Islands, and Nishida (1994) list- ed all species recorded from the islands together with the island distributions of each. We call special attention to the several endemic armadillid pillbugs that have not been recollected in more than 60 years. These are Hawaiodillo danae (Dollfus) and H. sharpi (Dollfus) from Kauai, H. perkinsi (Dollfus) from Maui, Spherillo albospinosus (Dollfus) from Oahu, and S. carinulatus Budde-Lund from Kauai. In addition, S. hawai- ensis Dana, previously recorded from Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, and Lanai was last collected on the main islands in 1933 on Oahu although it appears to be still common on Nihoa. We fear some species in this complex may be extinct and encourage field biologists to watch for them in potential refugia. GROUP II XENOLITHS FROM LUNAR CRATER VOLCANIC FIELD, NEVADA: IMPLICATIONS FOR SUBDUCTED PLATE METASOMATISM by JOHN CLARK MOSELY, JR. Under the Direction of MICHAEL F. RODEN ABSTRACT Lunar Crater Volcanic Field (LCVF), a Quaternary volcanic field in central Nevada, is characterized by alkali basalts that host megacrysts of clinopyroxene, amphibole and olivine as well as mafic and ultramafic xenoliths. The Group II xenoliths present at LCVF offer insight in to the complex magmatic processes at play beneath the volcanic field, as well as providing context for Tertiary and Quaternary volcanism in the western United States. Petrologic and geochemical analysis of these xenoliths and the constituent phases are consistent with genesis from a magma enriched in Ti and Al. High modal abundance of amphibole, as well as the presence of anomalously OH and Cl rich apatite within the xenoliths could be attributed to melting of a source rock enriched in water and chlorine. The geochemistry of xenoliths at LCVF is similar to that of subduction driven magmatism observed at island arcs and convergent margins but occurs well inland. Mantle enrichment by the dehydration of the shallowly subducted Farallon plate and subsequent melting of this enriched mantle allows for and is consistent with the hydrous xenoliths and the anomalous apatite hosted within them.
