They are finely embedded with the archetypal images such as light and darkness, sibling rivalry, tyrannical bullies, quest motif and character types. Albeit, the series has hooked up with various archetypal characteristics such as the theme of virtue conquers vice, it is the archetypal patterns in characters which have left a sturdy imprint to execute the thematic design of good versus evil in the entire plot structure. The intrinsic study of the series illustrates the infinite variety of experience of the dominant characters; wherein it reveals certain archetypal traits. • My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ
Homily for the Prayer Service for the Opening of the Preliminary Phase of the Diocesan Synod Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Springfield January 22, 2017 † Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki Bishop of Springfield in Illinois My dear brothers and sisters in Christ: One of my favorite movies is “Shadowlands,” the 1993 film about the British author and Oxford University scholar C.S. Lewis, starring one of my favorite actors, Anthony Hopkins, who played the part of Lewis. After I saw that movie for the first time in the theater, I rented the video and did something that I had never done before and have never done since: I watch the video in my living room with a note pad and jotted down quotes from the profound theological insights that were being spoken by the character of Lewis in the movie, which was based on his real life experiences dealing with the terminal illness of his wife Joy, who was dying of cancer. C.S. Lewis was the author of many significant books. He is best known for his fictional work, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy, and for his non-fiction Christian 2 apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain. After the death of his wife, he wrote A Grief Observed. Lewis was not always a Christian. Although he was baptized as an infant, as a young adult he lived as an atheist for several years before embracing the practice of Christianity at the age of 32 largely through the influence of his fellow novelist and Oxford University colleague, J.R.R.

  • Lewis on Emotion Corey Latta Teaching Pastor, Christ Church
COREYLEWIS LATTA – TEACHING ON PASTOR,EMOTION CHRIST CHURCH LEWIS ON EMOTION COREY LATTA TEACHING PASTOR, CHRIST CHURCH his past year for me has been about learning to live with heart. I won’t bore you with all the details; in short, I’ve always lived in and from my head. In childhood, I learned early that if I made my feelings known, they were met by one or another impaired response. Rage, self-pity, passive-aggressive barbs, various forms T of shame-based motivation, these were the conditions in which my heart, mind, and soul were formed. So I learned how to survive, finding those ladders in life that might take me above the pain of emotional vulnerability. Academia proved to be the ladder that took me highest. It’s not the easiest climb, the scholarly life, but it’s predictable and especially tailored to the overly cerebral. It also turned out to be my route to C. S. Lewis. From my first experience with Lewis —Mere Christianity, my senior year of college — I was hooked. That he offered something to my imagination and reason won’t surprise fellow Lewis devotees. That he helped me get my heart back certainly surprised me. Reviving one’s heart is a complicated, messy process requiring many surgeons, and Lewis had a steady hand in it. In every Lewis book I read, I noticed a trope that seemed level with the rung on which I was trying, and failing, to balance life. How could it be? At every point, he seemed to know that I was trying to climb over my own humanity.

  • Pauline Baynes
PAULINE BAYNES Chapin Library · Williams College October & November 1999 PAULINE BAYNES is not a household name, yet her work is widely known and loved. Mention that she drew the original pictures for the popular Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, and she is recognized at once. She is most closely associ- ated with Narnia, and with books by J.R.R. Tolkien such as Farmer Giles of Ham and The Adventures of Tom Bombadil; but she has done much more in her distinguished career, which has spanned more than half a century. She has produced hundreds of pictures in a variety of styles, for books and magazines of all sorts and by many authors, as well as ephemera ranging from Christmas cards to biscuit tins. Many of the books to which she has contributed have been children’s books – not least because books for children offer so many opportunities for embellishment – yet she is by no means solely an illustrator for children. She considers herself fore- most a decorator and designer, rather than an illustrator; in fact she is all of these together, though she is indeed notably skilled at pro- ducing decorative designs, and many of her pictorial illustrations have decorative frames. All of her art is meticulously composed and drawn (in pen and ink) or painted (in gouache), often with flowing, rhythmic lines that suggest movement and life. The Chapin Library is pleased to present this exhibition of some fifty books illustrated by Pauline Baynes, lent from a private local collection. All, for this occasion, are children’s books, selected in honour of and as the Library’s contribution to “Words Are Wonderful,” a celebration of children’s literature in Williamstown during the week of – October .
