S. Lewis’ has been a widely recognized name in both Britain and the United States. The significance of the writings of this scholar of medieval literature, Christian apologist and author of the children’s books The Chronicles of Narnia, while widely recognized, has not previously been investigated. Using a wide range of sources, including archival material, book reviews, monographs, articles and interviews, this dissertation examines the reception of Lewis in Britain and America, comparatively, from within his lifetime until the recent past. To do so, the methodology borrows from the history of the book and history of reading fields, and writes the biography of Lewis’s Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia. By contextualizing the writing of these works in the 1940s and 1950s, the evolution of Lewis’s respective platforms in Britain and America and these works’ reception across the twentieth century, this project contributes to the growing body of work that interrogates the print culture of Christianity. Extensive secondary reading, moreover, permitted the investigation of cultural, intellectual, social and religious factors informing Lewis’s reception, the existence of Lewis devotees in America and the lives of Mere Christianity and The Chronicles of Narnia in particular. Wade Center, Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois Archive i Chapter One Introduction The subject of this dissertation is the reception in Britain and America of the writings of the British scholar, author and Christian apologist C. S. Lewis (1898-1963), from the period of his lifetime until the early years of the twenty-first century. A prolific writer, Lewis came to fame in the early 1940s through two roughly simultaneous events: the phenomenal success of his book The Screwtape Letters, an imagined dialogue between a senior and a novice devil on the art of temptation, published in 1941, and a series of radio broadcasts he delivered over the BBC from 1941 to 1944 on the subject of Christianity. From that time until the present, the name of C. S. Lewis has been one widely familiar to both the British and American publics, with The Chronicles of Narnia, his series of fantasy books for children, playing an important part. The puzzle of why this Oxford don and his writings have continued to fascinate American Christians, especially, is one that has been pondered by many over the years. Yet no one, until now, has researched the topic in depth. The subject promises to reveal much about the conjunction of historical, cultural and religious factors that have made Lewis’s reception the phenomenon it is. This introduction will review the relevant secondary literature and explain the objectives and methodology of the project. Review of the Literature The appearance of articles in mainstream periodicals noting Lewis’s popularity is a testament to the interest the subject has held for a wide public. In the States, Lewis’s 2 appearance on the cover of Time magazine, in 1947, was accompanied by the assessment that his large following was ‘the result of Lewis’ special gift for dramatizing Christian dogma’.1 Time followed up on Lewis’s success in 1977 with 'C. S. Lewis Goes Marching On’, describing Lewis as 'the only author in English whose Christian writings combine intellectual stature with bestselling status’.2 In 1988 the subject was again in the American mainstream media when the New York Times published a piece called ‘C. S. Lewis: Gone But Hardly Forgotten’.3 The 1990s and early 2000s saw more of the same in America, particularly accompanying the release of the Walt Disney movie version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005: The New Yorker,4 U. S. News and World Report,5 CNN Belief Blog6 and The New York Times7 all published articles highlighting Lewis’s continuing popularity. The latest to date is ‘C. S.     Alec Vidler On Christian Faith and Secular Despair Born in Rye, Sussex, son of a shipping businessman, Alec Vidler ( 1899‐1991)was educated at Sutton Valence School, Kent, read theology at Selwyn College, Cambridge (B.A. 1921),then trained for the Anglican ministry at Wells Theological College. He disliked Wells and transferred to the Oratory of the Good Shepherd, Cambridge, an Anglo‐Catholic community of celibates, and was ordained priest in 1923. He retained a life‐time affection for the celibate monkish life, never marrying but having a wide range of friends, including Malcolm Muggeridge, who was at Selwyn with him. Muggeridge’s father was a prominent Labourite and Vidler imbibed leftist sympathies in that circle. His first curacy was in Newcastle, working in the slums. He soon came to love his work with working class parishioners and was reluctantly transferred to St Aidan’s Birmingham, where he became involved in a celebrated stoush with the bishop E. W. Barnes, himself a controversialist of note. Vidler’s Anglo‐ Catholic approach to ritual clashed with Barnes’s evangelicalism. Vidler began a prolific career of publication in the 1920s and 30s. In 1931 he joined friends like Wilfred Ward at the Oratory House in Cambridge, steeping himself in religious history and theology, including that of Reinhold Niebuhr and “liberal Catholicism”. In 1939 Vidler became warden of St Deiniol’s Library, Hawarden (founded by a legacy from Gladstone) and also editor of the leading Anglican journal Theology, which he ran until 1964, exerting considerable progressive influence across those years. He also facilitated a number of religious think‐tanks in these, and later, years.

Probably all students of theology must have noticed the significant change in the understanding of the term ' grace ' from the time of the New Testament onwards. Perhaps, too, they will have wondered how and why it was that the evangelical Apostolic message degenerated so completely into the pseudo-Christianity of the Dark and Middle Ages. It is the aim of Dr. Torrance in his small but important dis­ sertation to supply an answer to both these problems. He does so by taking the word ' grace ' and comparing the Biblical usage with that of the accepted Fathers of the sub-Apostolic period : the Didache, I and II Clement, Ignatius, Polycarp, Barnabas, and the Shepherd of Hermas. The resultant study has a threefold value for the theologian. It has, first, a narrower linguistic and historical value as a contribution to the understanding of the conception of grace in the first hundred years or so of Christian theology. As the author himself makes clear in the useful Introduction, this question is not so simple as some readers might suppose, for the term grace had many meanings in Classical and Hellenistic Greek. It is important then to fix the exact con­ notation in the New Testament itself, and also to achieve an aware­ ness of any shift of understanding in the immediate post-Apostolic period. The exegetical discussions at the end of each chapter have a considerable value in the accomplishment of this task.

Throughout the 95 years of the journal’s history, there has been discussion about public ethics (even if it has not always been named as such). However, Christian public ethics had a particular flourishing between 1965 and 1975, when Professor Gordon Dunstan (1918–2004) was editor. When I became editor of Theology in January 2014, I acknowledged at once my personal debt to Gordon. He encouraged and published my very first article when I was still a postgraduate in 1967, and several more articles beyond that. And, speaking personally, his example of deep engagement in medical ethics was inspirational. When he died, The Telegraph noted the following among his many achievements: He was president of the Tavistock Institute of Medical Psychology and vice-president of the London Medical Group and of the Institute of Medical Ethics. During the 1960s he was a member of a Department of Health Advisory Group on Transplant Policy, and from 1989 to 1993 he served on a Department of Health committee on the Ethics of Gene Therapy. From 1990 onwards he was a member of the Unrelated Live Transplant Regulatory Authority and from 1989 to 1993 he served on the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. They are finely embedded with the archetypal images such as light and darkness, sibling rivalry, tyrannical bullies, quest motif and character types. Albeit, the series has hooked up with various archetypal characteristics such as the theme of virtue conquers vice, it is the archetypal patterns in characters which have left a sturdy imprint to execute the thematic design of good versus evil in the entire plot structure. The intrinsic study of the series illustrates the infinite variety of experience of the dominant characters; wherein it reveals certain archetypal traits. Hence, the present paper explores on the variety of Archetypes in C.S.Lewis‟s The Chronicles of Narnia.   • Willow Creek: the Fiction of C
    C.S. Lewis and the Apologetics of Story Some have claimed that C.S. Lewis drifted towards fiction the last decade of his life because he was failed as an Apologist and no longer able to keep up with the complex philosophical questions of his day. In fact, fiction was always part of Lewis’s output. He wrote, “The imaginative man in me is older than the rational man and more continually operative.” Lewis used story as one of the tools in his rhetorical tool box because he knew that some people will not listen to a coherent and reasonable presentation of the Gospel. Their rejection of the things of God is buttressed with rationalization and self-justification. Reason stands before these people’s hearts like dragon sentries preventing even the best apologetic arguments from getting through. But, Lewis believed, sometimes story can get past watchful dragons. This Network will explore Lewis’s use of story as a rhetorical and apologetical tool for the Gospel. Jerry Root is Professor of Christian Education at Wheaton College and serves as the Director of the Evangelism Initiative. Jerry is a graduate of Whittier College and Talbot Graduate School of Theology at Biola University; he received his PhD from the Open University. Jerry is the author or co-author of numerous books on C.S. Lewis, including The Surprising Imagination of C.S. Lewis: An Introduction, with Mark Neal, C.S.
