Descriptive Entry This accession consists of audio and video elements created during the production of the radio series "Memphis: Cradle of Rock and Soul" and videos for the exhibition "Rock 'n' Soul: Social Crossroads." "Memphis: Cradle of Rock and Soul" is a 13-part radio documentary featuring oral histories and music from the National Museum of American History's collection of recordings. The programs were narrated by Cybill Shepherd and aired in the fall of 2000. "Rock 'n' Soul: Social Crossroads" was jointly produced by the National Museum of American History and the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum and permanently resides in Memphis. The exhibition, which opened in 2000, traces the emergence of rock and roll and rhythm and blues music in Memphis from 1930-1975, from its rural traditions and working class influences. Smithsonian Productions produced a number of videos for use in this exhibition. Much of the material in this collection consists of interviews and recordings of musicians on DAT or 3/4" U- matic videotape. Materials also include interviews of historians, voiceovers, rough cuts, and final cuts. • For Hodges, Music's 'All About Love' : Go Memphis
For Hodges, music's 'all about love' By Bob Mehr Thursday, July 21, 2011 Charles Hodges has seen the light twice in his life. The first time was as a 13-year-old boy, performing at his eighth-grade graduation. "The teacher asked me if I would play 'What I'd Say' by Ray Charles. I did and got such huge cheers, a standing ovation. All I could see was the (stage) lights, but I could hear the applause and the whistles," says Hodges. "Right then I said, 'This is what I want to do. I want to be a musician.'" Some 40 years later, Charles Hodges saw the light again; this time it was God sending out a signal to change his ways. Hodges would do just that, giving up his secular music career and becoming an ordained minister. In between those two life-altering events, Hodges was responsible for some of the most vital and familiar sounds in all of American music. As the keyboardist for Memphis' Hi Records house band, his signature organ work colored the great hits of O.V. Wright, Al Green, Ann Peebles and Syl Johnson. This past week Hodges released his second solo CD, God He's Able, a collection of soulful spiritual and worship songs. For the 64-year-old Hodges, the record is just another marker in a long musical journey and personal journey. The sixth of 12 children, Hodges was raised in what were then the farm lands of post- World War II Germantown. "It was just a two-lane highway out there," recalls Hodges.

  • In the Studio: the Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006)
21 In the Studio: The Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006) John Covach I want this record to be perfect. Meticulously perfect. Steely Dan-perfect. -Dave Grohl, commencing work on the Foo Fighters 2002 record One by One When we speak of popular music, we should speak not of songs but rather; of recordings, which are created in the studio by musicians, engineers and producers who aim not only to capture good performances, but more, to create aesthetic objects. (Zak 200 I, xvi-xvii) In this "interlude" Jon Covach, Professor of Music at the Eastman School of Music, provides a clear introduction to the basic elements of recorded sound: ambience, which includes reverb and echo; equalization; and stereo placement He also describes a particularly useful means of visualizing and analyzing recordings. The student might begin by becoming sensitive to the three dimensions of height (frequency range), width (stereo placement) and depth (ambience), and from there go on to con sider other special effects. One way to analyze the music, then, is to work backward from the final product, to listen carefully and imagine how it was created by the engineer and producer. To illustrate this process, Covach provides analyses .of two songs created by famous producers in different eras: Steely Dan's "Josie" and Phil Spector's "Da Doo Ron Ron:' Records, tapes, and CDs are central to the history of rock music, and since the mid 1990s, digital downloading and file sharing have also become significant factors in how music gets from the artists to listeners. Live performance is also important, and some groups-such as the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and more recently Phish and Widespread Panic-have been more oriented toward performances that change from night to night than with authoritative versions of tunes that are produced in a recording studio.
