“Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”--Jerry Lee Lewis (1957) Added to the National Registry: 2005 Essay by Joe Bonomo (guest post)* Jerry Lee Lewis Original label The opening two minutes of Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” are so striking and irrepressible that they all but guaranteed the song would be a major hit. The second half ensured that the song, and “The Killer,” would become unforgettable. Released in April 1957, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” was Lewis’s second single, following “Crazy Arms,” which had failed to chart. But Lewis, well aware of his own potency, and his singular talent, and buoyed by producer Sam Phillips’s intuitive work in Sun Studio, brought “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” into the recording sessions confident that it could be a hit. How Lewis came to know the song is a predictably murky tale. Sources suggest that he’d learned it from Big Maybelle’s or Roy Hall’s earlier versions; Lewis himself claimed to have heard it from the singer Johnny Littlejohn at the Wagon Wheel nightclub in Natchez, Mississippi. Force of nature that he is, Lewis usually transforms the landscape of any tune he moves through, and “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” was no different. Recording sessions took place in February 1957, in Sun Studios at 706 Union Street in Memphis, Tennessee. Lewis played piano and sang; backing him were Roland Janes on guitar and J.M. Van Eaton on drums. Engineer Jack Clement supervised the recordings. Bathed in the fabled Sun Studio slap-back echo, they’d produced several unsatisfying takes until Lewis, encouraged by Janes and Van Eaton, pushed the song toward a new arrangement. -

Johnny Peters was a the negatives to positives, and opened up new master shoemaker with his own business and his horizons which Lynne took advantage of at every daughters were his pride and joy, with Lynne opportunity. The new man to enter her life was being the apple of her father's eye. However Ken, again from a family business background, Lynne's escapades with sister Libby did not go again with a shipping career, again needing the unnoticed by the keen eye countryside as anglers will of eldest sister Joan, and always do, and to Lynne's throughout her life Joan amusement, learning that was to be a confidante, an both had a mother called advisor, and most of all a Ada! dearly beloved friend and sister. Ken was an original member of the infamous The countryside and its "Re-cycled Teenage many simplistic delights Delinquents Association" was Lynne's real passion. -

As I write this on The renovated Parsonian Hotel where we stayed reminded me September 25th, I’m preparing to go to England the 28th to headline of being on the road in the 1950’s and 60’s. the Hemsby Rock N' Roll weekender on October 1st. I’ll return home the 3rd. My wife Loretta’s mother, Lottys Stanfield died September 17th – at age 85. Loretta is doing as well as could be expected, though she’s in failing health. My recording “Loretta”, is being released to country radio around the world by MMG this October. My apologies that it’s been a year since my last letter. There will be no bills accompanying this one. This years dues for those of you who are already members are on me. September 14th was 10 years since Loretta and I lost our only son “Bub” in a car accident at age 31. Bub had played drums with me. -

The tiny Sun studio at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, may not have looked like much from the outside, but inside musical miracles were being performed daily by its enigmatic owner, Sam Phillips. Phillips began more or less as a talent scout for other record labels, such as the legendary Chess Records in Chicago. However, aer discovering a wealth of talent in his own backyard in the Mid-South area, Phillips began his own record label-Sun Records-with an emblematic rising sun and rooster logo. A white man who loved and understood African-American music, Phillips recorded soon-to-be blues icons such as Howlin Wolf, Rufus Thomas and B.B. King. A seismic shi occurred during one session in 1951 when Phillips recorded Rocket 88 with Jackie Brenston and Ike Turner. That shi was to become known as rock and roll. A shy white boy named Elvis Presley came into the studio to record a song for his mother s birthday. Phillips recognized something in the young man, and a moment of silliness in the studio ruptured into the first record of the future King of Rock Roll, That s All Right.
