Ryan Joseph O’Byrne, 21 September 2016 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines contemporary entanglements between two cosmo-ontological systems within one African community. The first system is the indigenous cosmology of the Acholi community of Pajok, South Sudan; the other is the world religion of evangelical Protestantism. Christianity has been in the region around 100 years, and although the current religious field represents a significant shift from earlier compositions, the continuing effects of colonial and early missionary encounters have had significant impact. This thesis seeks to understand the cosmological transformations involved in all these encounters. This thesis provides the first in-depth account of South Sudanese Acholi – a group almost entirely absent from the ethnographic record. However, its largest contributions come through wider theoretical and ethnographic insights gained in attending to local Acholi cosmological, ontological, and experiential orientations. These contributions are: firstly, the connection of Melanesian ideas of agency and personhood to Africa, demonstrating not only the relational nature of Acholi personhood but an understanding of agency acknowledging nonhuman actors; secondly, a demonstration of the primarily relational nature of local personhood whereby Acholi and evangelical persons and relations are similarly structured; and thirdly, an argument that, in South Sudan, both systems are ultimately about how people organise the moral fabric of their society. -

African Study Monographs, 34 (1): 1–25, March 2013 1 MONOLINGUALISM VIA MULTILINGUALISM: A CASE STUDY OF LANGUAGE USE IN THE WEST UGANDAN TOWN OF HOIMA Shigeki KAJI Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies, Kyoto University ABSTRACT Multilingualism is one of the most salient features of language use in Africa and, at first sight, Uganda appears to be just one example of this practice. However, as Uganda has no lingua franca that is widely used by its entire population, questions about how people cope with multilingualism arise. Answers to such questions can be found in the fact that people are able to create a monolingual state in a given area because everyone is multilingual. That is, people speak their own language in their own domain and speak other peoples’ languages when they go to the latter’s domains. This conclusion emerged from interviews conducted with 100 inhabitants of Hoima city in western Uganda, an area primarily inhabited by the Nyoro people. The linguistic situation in Hoima provides a valuable case study of what can happen in the absence of a fully developed lingua franca and can contribute to broader discussions of language use in Africa. The main themes of my research relate to the grammatical and lexical characteristics of little-known languages in the area. 四天王寺大学紀要 第 53 号(2012年 3 月) Preparing Myel Agwara for Cezario Oungi Unu: An Overview of the First and Second Meetings Noriko TAHARA The myel agwara is the dance of agwara( long horns) and, more precisely, is called Myel mira agwara ku vul( dance of agwara and drum). This is the last jobo vuru( farewell; jobo = collecting or removing, vuru = ashes) and mourning for the dead, and it is generally performed some years after the person’s death. The myel agwara is planned by the offspring of the deceased and neighbouring clans are invited to perform it together. The manner in which the myel agwara is initiated is described below. The dance begins on a Friday and visitors arrive late at night. If the host’s ambaya( picture 1) is strong, visitors might fail to fi nd their way to the place for the myel agwara and reach only in the morning hours. This means that the visitor is lost. If the visitors’ ambaya is strong enough, they will reach the myel agwara at the right time and it means that the host is lost. When visitors arrive at the place for the myel agwara, they should drum and run. The drums are hidden by the host. If a visitor drums and fails to run away, then the host will arrest the visitor, who in that case will have to pay a fi ne of one bull. If the host cannot arrest visitor, the visitor has won. There is a kajagi( long pole), intentionally stuck unstably into the earth, for the host to dig a shallow hole in the ground.
