Alex Gallardo Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography Eyes on the Ball April 11 Through May 20, 2011
Alex Gallardo Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography Eyes on the Ball April 11 through May 20, 2011 An exhibition of photographs Miller Hall, University of La Verne Photographer’s Statement My start in photojournalism began with a slide show program during a beginning photo class at the University of La Verne. It was presented by a well-known photojournalist at the The Sun in San Bernardino, Tom Kasser. His work opened my eyes. Once I had seen what he could do with a camera, it brought me to see, and not just look, at the world around me. Kasser gave me a goal to strive for, to work at The Sun as a staff photographer. Through my undergraduate career I learned the mechanics of the craft. As a lifetime baseball player I already had the competitive gene so I redirected my passion for athletics toward photography. I took a detour in my quest to be a photojournalist after graduating from ULV. A huge mistake cost me thirteen months of my professional life, and almost the use of my legs. I drove a dump truck backwards over a cliff, spent three months in a hospital and at home in a body cast recuperating from injuries. I spent another nine months in physical therapy learning to walk. Doctors told me that I might not regain the use of my legs or walk without assistance for least five years, if ever. Luckily, I had a great physical therapist. We worked hard every day and prayed to regain the use of my legs. Once I began to walk doctors cleared me to continue as a photographer and stay away from driving trucks. -

Should the 2013 NBA Playoffs Be Called the Miami Heat Invitational?
Should The 2013 NBA Playoffs Be Called The Miami Heat Invitational? Author : Robert D. Cobb With the 2013 NBA Finals set to begin, one cannot help but think that the defending champion Miami Heat have all but booked their after-parties and champagne. Thanks to one of the most dominating regular seasons in NBA history by newly crowned NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James and the Heat’s captivating 27-game win streak, NBA commissioner David Stern should just hand the Larry O’Brien trophy to Heat owner Micky Arison and call it a day right? With all due respect to fans of the Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies, but the entire 2013 NBA Playoffs have been nothing more but a pre-ordained coronation—and farce—of the Heat as one of the all-time great NBA teams, as well as validation of LeBron’s “decision” In thoroughly—and almost hilariously—easy fashion, the Heat dispatched of an overmatched Milwaukee Bucks squad and an under-manned and gutsy Chicago Bulls team playing without Derrick Rose, Kirk Hinrich and Luol Deng. Would any of these players helped against the Heat? Doubtful, but it is what it is. This coming from a lifelong fan of LeBron’s former team is bad enough, but due to the inevitable reality of the situation at hand, it is time for all the haters outside of South Beach to get used to the sight of the “Big Three” hoisting up championship banners and parading down Biscayne Boulevard. While I cannot take personal credit for coining the term, “Miami Heat Invitational” as Paul Coro at AZCentral.com beat me too it back -

Butcher wanted to believe that the third friend could pull through, but after what he had seen that night, hope was hard to muster. “His chances,” Butcher says, “were slim to none.” Dr. Nitin Bhatia, the 36-year-old director of the Spine Center at UCI, had delivered the grisly diagnosis: internal decapitation. “I read the CT scan, and it was depressing,” Bhatia says. “Ninety-five percent of people with internal decapitation die immediately or within a day or two. Of the other five percent, most are either quadriplegic or on a ventilator the rest of their lives.” By the afternoon of April 9 the baseball world had learned of the death of Angels starting pitcher Nick Adenhart and his friends Courtney Stewart and BOUnd BY TRAGEdy Weaver (left) pays tribute Henry Pearson in a car crash, and information started to emerge to Adenhart before every about that other passenger, a 24-year-old youth baseball coach start and had a hug for named Jon Wilhite, who had been a catcher at Cal State–Fullerton. -

The cultural disconnect was that drastic. France, because of its colonies, half the team is black. There was a serious disconnect between the players and the staff. Professional Wireless Systems Offers Champion-Caliber Frequency Coordination for 2013 Nba Finals
PROFESSIONAL WIRELESS SYSTEMS OFFERS CHAMPION‐CALIBER FREQUENCY COORDINATION FOR 2013 NBA FINALS On‐Site Technical Expertise Ensures Solid RF Coverage for 9th Consecutive Championship Series MIAMI, JUNE 21, 2013—When game one of the 2013 NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs tipped off at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), a Masque Sound Company, and experts in supplying and supporting wireless systems for live and broadcast events, was courtside, coordinating RF for the more than 250 frequencies in use at the championship series. This marks the ninth straight time PWS has managed the frequencies for the Finals. This year, PWS’ team on the ground included Jim Van Winkle John Garrido and Larry Myhre, who worked closely with the team venues—the American Airlines Arena in Miami (Miami Heat) and the AT&T Center in San Antonio (San Antonio Spurs)—to ensure zero frequency interference throughout the course of each game. “Familiarity is a key factor in making frequency coordination work,” says Van Winkle, general manager, PWS. “Since this is the third consecutive year the Miami Heat have made it to the Finals, we had the advantage of already being familiar with their arena. And although it’s been eight years since the Spurs were in the championship, we have been in their building as well, so that also made it easier for us.” For the seven game series, PWS also collaborated with the networks broadcasting the games, along with the local Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) coordinators, to get the local contacts and information they needed at each venue.
