Should the 2013 NBA Playoffs Be Called the Miami Heat Invitational? Should The 2013 NBA Playoffs Be Called The Miami Heat Invitational? Author : Robert D. Cobb With the 2013 NBA Finals set to begin, one cannot help but think that the defending champion Miami Heat have all but booked their after-parties and champagne. Thanks to one of the most dominating regular seasons in NBA history by newly crowned NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James and the Heat’s captivating 27-game win streak, NBA commissioner David Stern should just hand the Larry O’Brien trophy to Heat owner Micky Arison and call it a day right? With all due respect to fans of the Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies, but the entire 2013 NBA Playoffs have been nothing more but a pre-ordained coronation—and farce—of the Heat as one of the all-time great NBA teams, as well as validation of LeBron’s “decision” In thoroughly—and almost hilariously—easy fashion, the Heat dispatched of an overmatched Milwaukee Bucks squad and an under-manned and gutsy Chicago Bulls team playing without Derrick Rose, Kirk Hinrich and Luol Deng. Would any of these players helped against the Heat? Doubtful, but it is what it is. This coming from a lifelong fan of LeBron’s former team is bad enough, but due to the inevitable reality of the situation at hand, it is time for all the haters outside of South Beach to get used to the sight of the “Big Three” hoisting up championship banners and parading down Biscayne Boulevard. While I cannot take personal credit for coining the term, “Miami Heat Invitational” as Paul Coro at AZCentral.com beat me too it back in April, I would love to expand on it going forward into the upcoming NBA Finals and as a true basketball fan, let’s be real here for a second and look at the body of work that the remaining contestants in this media-manufactured reality show that is called the 2013 NBA playoffs, shall we? You have a tough, physical and team-oriented team in the Pacers, who won the Central Division and beat the Heat twice in the regular season, while this all good and dandy, that was the regular season, and we all know that the real season begins now, while I will give them two games, look for the Heat to effortlessly dispose of the pesky Pacers in six games. Out west, you have the gritty and physical Grizzlies, who would set a franchise record in wins with 56 and ground the high-flying Los Angeles Clippers and Oklahoma City Thunder—sans Russell Westbrook. 1 / 2 While OKC did not have the services of it’s flashy loose cannon of a guard in Westbrook, bottom line is that Memphis made Kevin Durant look more like Robin to Westbrook’s Batman. Can the Grizzlies beat the Heat? Yes. Will they? No. Not in a seven-game series, unless Memphis can keep Miami from getting out in transition, which is about as often as stopping a child from running amok in a toy store. Then there is San Antonio, the veteran Spurs triumvirate of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili may be the only team capable of giving Miami a serious challenge in the fact that they are experienced, have consistent three-point shooting, a knack for playing defense in the half-court and no fear of the hype behind the Heat. Mind you that it was San Antonio that was fined by the NBA—Stern in particular—for sending Parker, Duncan, Ginobili and Danny Green home when these teams played in Miami, the point is, both of these teams would be a perfect match in contrasts. The old guard of the Spurs vs the new blood of Miami. flash vs fundamentals and the gritty Spurs defense vs the up-and-down Heat track team in overpriced Nikes. If there is one team that COULD beat Miami, it is San Antonio, will they? No. Simply due to the Heat having the eyes and hunger of a champion out to silence the critics/haters and as a bonus, LeBron would also get a chance to exact some revenge on the Spurs for sweeping him in the Finals when he was with those ill-fated Cavaliers in 2007. As it stands now, the NBA title is Miami’s to lose—and lose alone. So unless the 2013 Heat magically morph into the hapless 1988-89 team, the winner of the Spurs-Grizzlies matchup will be playing for the right to be no more than a brief footnote in the Heatle’s march to hardwood greatness. #Heatles @Miami_Heat Robert D. • Professional Wireless Systems Offers Champion-Caliber Frequency Coordination for 2013 Nba Finals
PROFESSIONAL WIRELESS SYSTEMS OFFERS CHAMPION‐CALIBER FREQUENCY COORDINATION FOR 2013 NBA FINALS On‐Site Technical Expertise Ensures Solid RF Coverage for 9th Consecutive Championship Series MIAMI, JUNE 21, 2013—When game one of the 2013 NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs tipped off at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), a Masque Sound Company, and experts in supplying and supporting wireless systems for live and broadcast events, was courtside, coordinating RF for the more than 250 frequencies in use at the championship series. This marks the ninth straight time PWS has managed the frequencies for the Finals. This year, PWS’ team on the ground included Jim Van Winkle John Garrido and Larry Myhre, who worked closely with the team venues—the American Airlines Arena in Miami (Miami Heat) and the AT&T Center in San Antonio (San Antonio Spurs)—to ensure zero frequency interference throughout the course of each game. “Familiarity is a key factor in making frequency coordination work,” says Van Winkle, general manager, PWS. “Since this is the third consecutive year the Miami Heat have made it to the Finals, we had the advantage of already being familiar with their arena. And although it’s been eight years since the Spurs were in the championship, we have been in their building as well, so that also made it easier for us.” For the seven game series, PWS also collaborated with the networks broadcasting the games, along with the local Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) coordinators, to get the local contacts and information they needed at each venue.

  • Preparing for the Madness
Cinco 2014 Spurs Championship Celebration On June 15, 2014, the San Antoni o Spurs defeated the Miami Heat 4-1 in the NBA Finals to secure their 5th NBA Championship in franchise history and their first in seven seasons. I led the preparation for the in-arena ceremony, river parade, Alamo- dome celebration, and ring ceremony. Preparing For The Madness Once the Spurs advanced to the 2014 NBA Finals to face off versus the Miami Heat for a second consecutive season, preparation for a possible airport return, river parade and Alamodome celebration promptly began. Since it had been seven years since the last time the organization had celebrated an NBA championship, there were several questions to be answered. Luckily, we’d prepared the season before when the Spurs lost a heartbreaking seven-game series to Miami in the 2013 NBA Finals. First, we needed to plan the river parade. This parade starts in downtown San Anto- nio and several barges float the San Antonio River in front of more than 100,000 Spurs fans. The culmination of the river parade takes place at the historic Arneson River Theatre. It is here that a band and DJ perform and players and coaches stop to address the crowd. Among the elements that needed to be planned were Riverwalk and barge décor, the booking of entertainment acts for the stage, start and ending logistics, distribution of individuals on the barges and most importantly, creating a schedule for television and the execution of the timing. Several staff from Spurs Sports & Entertainment, including myself, worked with the City of San Antonio and the CE Group, a local event-planning company, to plan the hundreds of tasks that would need to be turned around in 3-5 days depending on if and when we secured a title.

PUBLICATION: SI.com DATE: 11/2/15 Tiago Splitter's passing, defense make the Atlanta Hawks dangerous By Mika Honkasalo Despite a 60-win season and a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, the Atlanta Hawks are still widely perceived to be smoke and mirrors due to their lack of traditional star power. While most championship teams boast an elite player who combines a multitude of resources from one spot on the court (with lesser pieces then filling the gaps around him), those resources are decentralized on the Hawks, and are held together by a brilliant system and collective basketball IQ. Seeing how Stephen Curry or LeBron James gets from point A to point B is easy to follow because everything flows from them, but so much of what makes the Hawks special occurs on the periphery, with multiple, specialized skill sets operating in harmony to recreate the same effect as having a star. While the free agency loss of DeMarre Carroll disrupted some of those intricate processes, the front office helped offset his move with the addition of Tiago Splitter, whose entirely different skill set should plug very nicely into the system, and could make Atlanta even tougher come May. Like the Hawks, the attributes that make Splitter so successful fly under the radar. He’s not much of a dunker, post scorer, or shot blocker. If you detailed the different moves in his repertoire, it would be a very short list, and even then he’d struggle to jump over it. With the ball in his hands, Splitter can look awkward, thanks to his propensity for reverse layups and assortment of flip shots he unloads from the hip or behind his head.
