  • New York Giants 2012 Season Recap 2012 New York Giants
NEW YORK GIANTS 2012 SEASON RECAP The 2012 Giants finished 9-7 and in second place in the NFC East. It was the eighth consecutive season in which the Giants finished .500 or better, their longest such streak since they played 10 seasons in a row without a losing record from 1954-63. The Giants finished with a winning record for the third consecutive season, the first time they had done that since 1988-90 (when they were 10-6, 12-4, 13-3). Despite extending those streaks, they did not earn a postseason berth. The Giants lost control of their playoff destiny with back-to-back late-season defeats in Atlanta and Baltimore. They routed Philadelphia in their finale, but soon learned they were eliminated when Chicago beat Detroit. The Giants compiled numerous impressive statistics in 2012. They scored 429 points, the second-highest total in franchise history; the 1963 Giants scored 448. The 2012 season was the fifth in the 88-year history of the franchise in which the Giants scored more than 400 points. The Giants scored a franchise- record 278 points at home, shattering the old mark of 248, set in 2007. In their last three home games – victories over Green Bay, New Orleans and Philadelphia – the Giants scored 38, 52 and 42 points. The 2012 team allowed an NFL-low 20 sacks. The Giants were fourth in the NFL in both takeaways (35, four more than they had in 2011) and turnover differential (plus-14, a significant improvement over 2011’s plus-7). The plus-14 was the Giants’ best turnover differential since they were plus-25 in 1997.

Alex Gallardo Irene Carlson Gallery of Photography Eyes on the Ball April 11 through May 20, 2011 An exhibition of photographs Miller Hall, University of La Verne Photographer’s Statement My start in photojournalism began with a slide show program during a beginning photo class at the University of La Verne. It was presented by a well-known photojournalist at the The Sun in San Bernardino, Tom Kasser. His work opened my eyes. Once I had seen what he could do with a camera, it brought me to see, and not just look, at the world around me. Kasser gave me a goal to strive for, to work at The Sun as a staff photographer. Through my undergraduate career I learned the mechanics of the craft. As a lifetime baseball player I already had the competitive gene so I redirected my passion for athletics toward photography. I took a detour in my quest to be a photojournalist after graduating from ULV. A huge mistake cost me thirteen months of my professional life, and almost the use of my legs. I drove a dump truck backwards over a cliff, spent three months in a hospital and at home in a body cast recuperating from injuries. I spent another nine months in physical therapy learning to walk. Doctors told me that I might not regain the use of my legs or walk without assistance for least five years, if ever. Luckily, I had a great physical therapist. We worked hard every day and prayed to regain the use of my legs. Once I began to walk doctors cleared me to continue as a photographer and stay away from driving trucks.

  • After Unsteady Steps to Punish Domestic Violence, N.F.L. Faces Scrutiny Again
After Unsteady Steps to Punish Domestic Violence, N.F.L. Faces Scrutiny Again By KEN BELSON and BILL PENNINGTON OCT. 21 2016 The N.F.L. indefinitely suspended Giants kicker Josh Brown after the release of documents that mention abuse of his ex-wife. Credit Al Bello/Getty Images After one of the most egregious cases of domestic violence among National Football League players two years ago, in which a star on the Baltimore Ravens was caught on video knocking out his fiancée, the league vowed a not-again, get-tough approach. The player, Ray Rice, was suspended indefinitely after an uproar regarding his initial punish- ment, a two-game suspension. Public service announcements featuring players denouncing domestic violence were broadcast during games. A former prosecutor was hired to lead a newly formed unit to help the league investigate cases without relying solely on the authorities. And the commissioner, Roger Goodell, after the public burst of anger over Rice’s conduct and the initial limited penalty for it, instituted a policy of six-game suspensions for players found to have committed abusive acts against a spouse or partner. Yet the N.F.L. is once again facing a crisis after revelations this week regarding a Giants player who admitted to the team that he had abused his wife and was allowed to remain on the roster after only a one-game suspension from the league. Police documents released Wednesday showed that the player, kicker Josh Brown, wrote about being “physically, verbally and emotionally” abusive to his wife. The team took him off its active roster on Friday, and the league suspended him indefinitely with pay.
