During the last part of his life, his towering personality dominated the intellectual climate of Russia and the world to an unprecedented degree. His work, moreover, continues to be studied and admired. His views on art, literature, morals, politics, and life have never ceased to influence writers and thinkers all over the world. Such interest over the years has produced an immense quantity of books and articles about Tolstoy, his ideas, and his work. In Russia alone their number exceeded ten thousand some time ago (more than 5,500 items were published in the Soviet Union between 1917 and 1957) and con tinues to rise. -

CHAPTER 8 Tolstoy and Cosmopolitanism Christian Bartolf Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) is known as the famous Russian writer, author of the novels Anna Karenina, War and Peace, The Kreutzer Sonata, and Resurrection, author of short prose like “The Death of Ivan Ilyich”, “How Much Land Does a Man Need”, and “Strider” (Kholstomer). His literary work, including his diaries, letters and plays, has become an integral part of world literature. Meanwhile, more and more readers have come to understand that Leo Tolstoy was a unique social thinker of universal importance, a nineteenth- and twentieth-century giant whose impact on world history remains to be reassessed. His critics, descendants, and followers became almost innu- merable, among them Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in South Africa, later called “Mahatma Gandhi”, and his German-Jewish architect friend Hermann Kallenbach, who visited the publishers and translators of Tolstoy in England and Scotland (Aylmer Maude, Charles William Daniel, Isabella Fyvie Mayo) during the Satyagraha struggle of emancipation in South Africa. The friendship of Gandhi, Kallenbach, and Tolstoy resulted in an English-language correspondence which we find in the Collected Works C. Bakhtin and Tolstoy Abstract This article is a study of the way Bakhtin compared and contrasted Dostoevsky and Tolstoy throughout his career. Special attention is given to Bakhtin's two "Prefaces" of 1929 and 1930 to Resurrection and to the dramas in the Collected Literary Works edition of Tolstoy. Bakhtin's view of Tolstoy is not as narrow as is generally thought. Tolstoy is seen as one of many figures of European literature that make up Bakhtin's literary consciousness. He serves as a point of contrast with Dostoevsky and is described as belonging to an older, more rigid, monologic tradition. Bakhtin's prefaces to Tolstoy's works are not just immanent stylistic analyses but can be seen as well as one of the moments when Bakhtin turns to a sociology of style in the wider sense of examining the social-economic conditions that engender style. -

Ivan Turgenev's Finnish Contacts

Helsinki 2008 ISBN 978-952-10-5136-4 (paperback), ISBN 978-952-10-5137-1 (PDF), ISSN 0780-3281 Ben Hellman (University of Helsinki) A Visitor and a Letter: Ivan Turgenev’s Finnish Contacts Ivan Turgenev was the first Russian writer to gain popularity in Finland, with many translations into Swedish and Finnish being published during his last years. On the other hand, Turgenev’s personal contacts with Finland were next to nonexistent. He never visited Finland, and neither did he reveal any interest in Finnish culture. Among his friends and acquaintances nobody with a Finnish background is to be found. The sole contacts with Finland to be registered are Jac. Ahrenberg’s visit to Turgenev in Paris in 1878 and – four years later – a letter from a publisher concerning Finnish translations. Ahrenberg’s visit has passed unnoticed by researchers, while Turgenev’s letter in reply to the Finnish publisher has been included in the writer’s col- lected works, it is true, though accompanied by totally erroneous comments. The visitor In 1878 Jac. Ahrenberg (1847–1914) was chosen to be a member of the Fin- nish commission for the Paris World Fair. He had studied architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, and after having received a diploma in 1874, he worked as a teacher of drawing and art history in Finland. Simultaneously he had established himself as a journalist and writer.
