Jerome S. Fanciulli Collection History of Aviation Collection Provenance Jerome S. Fanciulli was born in New York City, January 12, 1988. He was the son of Professor Francesco and Amanda Fanciulli. He was educated at de Witt Clinton High School in New York City. He attended St. Louis University, St. Louis, 1903-04 and Stevens Institute, Hoboken, N.J., 1904-05. He married Marian Callaghan in November, 1909. On January 12, 1986 he died in Winchester Hospital in Winchester, Virginia. Mr. Fanciulli worked for the Washington Post and then joined the Associated Press where his assignments were on the Capitol staff of the Associated Press. He became the AP’s aviation specialist. Mr. Fanciulli was a charter member of the National Press Club and a founding member of the Aero Club of Washington, D.C. In November 19098, Mr. Fanciulli joined Glenn H. Curtiss’ company. He was Vice President and General Manger of the Curtiss Exhibition Company. Among his many varied duties Mr. Fanciulli established schools of aviation and directed the demonstration and sale of Curtiss aeroplanes in the United States and Europe. He promoted or conducted some of the largest air meets in the United States prior to 1913. He collaborated with the United States Army and the United States Navy in developing aeroplane specifications. Mr. Fanciulli wrote magazine articles, employed and directed aviators obtaining contracts for them. Mr. Fanciulli sold the United States Navy its first biplane and the United States Army its second biplane. He also sold czarist Russia its first plane for their Navy. DoD is concerned about improving safety because aviation accidents erode DoD’s war fighting capabilities in many tangible and intangible ways. DoD aviation accidents are classified by the severity of injury or property damage. Class A accidents are the most severe events and the rate at which these accidents occur is the most frequently used yardstick for measuring aviation safety. The Office of the Secretary of Defense, and the military Services (including the Coast Guard) have different roles and responsibilities in military aviation safety promotion and mishap investigations. Generally speaking, the Services have the most active and involved role in promoting aviation safety. The Services conduct two types of mishap investigations, generally referred to as safety investigations and legal investigations. In the commercial and civil sector, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) conducts a single investigation. The status of military aviation safety depends heavily on one’s viewpoint. There is no consensus on how well the Services are doing in promoting and improving aviation safety. Some believe that the current mishap rate is acceptable. Others believe that it is unacceptable and can be improved. Others believe that DoD should strive for, and achieve, a “zero mishap rate.” Over the past 50 years, data show that the total annual number of accidents and the rate at which they occur have significantly decreased. -

Despite difficulties acquiring 5th-generation stealth technology, the VKS has replaced aging Soviet jets with 4++-generation fighters and fighter-bombers such as the Su-34 and Su-35 that will continue to provide it a powerful edge over its immediate neighbours while it develops its space policy and completes the moderni- zation of its other services. Celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation in 1/72 Scale 2010 USN/USMC/USCG 1/72 Aircraft Kit Survey J. Michael McMurtrey IPMS-USA 1746 Carrollton, TX [email protected] As 2011 marks the centennial of U.S. naval aviation, aircraft modelers might be interested in this list of US naval aircraft — including those of the Marines and Coast Guard, as well as captured enemy aircraft tested by the US Navy — which are available as 1/72 scale kits. Why 1/72? There are far more kits of naval aircraft available in this scale than any other. Plus, it’s my favorite, in spite of advancing age and weakening eyes. This is an updated version of an article I prepared for the 75th Anniversary of US naval aviation and which was published in a 1986 issue of the old IPMS-USA Update. It’s amazing to compare the two and realize what developments have occurred, both in naval aeronautical technology and the scale modeling hobby, but especially the latter. My 1986 list included 168 specific aircraft types available in kit form from thirty- three manufacturers — some injected, some vacuum-formed — and only three conversion kits and no resin kits. Many of these names (Classic Plane, Contrails, Eagle’s Talon, Esci, Ertl, Formaplane, Frog, Griffin, Hawk, Matchbox, Monogram, Rareplane, Veeday, Victor 66) are no longer with us or have been absorbed by others. This update lists 345 aircraft types (including the original 168) from 192 different companies (including the original 33), many of which, especially the producers of resin kits, were not in existence in 1986, and some of which were unknown to me at the time. -

Second Combat Brigade of PRC Air Force Likely Receives Stealth Fighter Derek Solen Something unusual appeared in a satellite image of an airbase in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in early April 2021. In the image, a J-20 appears to be taxiing from the runway at Anshan Airport, a military-civilian, dual-use airport in northeastern China that is the home base of the 1st Aviation Brigade of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).i The J-20 is China’s fifth-generation fighter aircraft.ii Only three units are known to operate the J-20. Two of them are testing and training units, the 172nd Aviation Regiment at Cangzhou Airbase and the 176th Aviation Brigade at Dingxin Airbase; the third is a combat unit, the 9th Aviation Brigade, which is temporarily stationed at Quzhou Airbase. Therefore, it is unusual for a J-20 to operate from Anshan Airport, which is also known as Anshan Airbase. There are a few possible reasons for the presence of the J-20 at Anshan. First, it is possible that the pilot was practicing long-distance flight and/or deployment from Quzhou and that he merely landed at Anshan to refuel before making his way back to his home base. Additions and corrections are welcome at [email protected] Arado Ar 234 "Blitz" in Soviet service Soviet troops captured one example of the world's first jet bomber in northern Germany in spring 1945 (Russian sources state that it was found at Pütnitz in March, but Pütnitz was occupied by the Red Army only on 2 May). The aircraft underwent short trials at Rechlin in early 1946, but suffered from repeated engine problems. As the Soviet specialists involved in the trials were not impressed by the "Blitz" they refrained from sending it to the Soviet Union. It is probable that further Ar 234s (especially of the Ar 234C-3 version) fell into Soviet hands when the Red Army captured the Arado factory at Alt-Lönnewitz (Brandenburg) on 24 April 1945. One Russian source states that one Ar 234B and one Ar 234C were despatched to the Soviet Union where they underwent comprehensive study - in particular, one of the aircraft was thoroughly examined by BNT, the Bureau of New Technology. Chapter 1 Aircraft Designations and Popular Names Background on the Evolution of Aircraft Designations Aircraft model designation history is very complex. To fully understand the designations, it is important to know the factors that played a role in developing the different missions that aircraft have been called upon to perform. Technological changes affecting aircraft capabilities have resulted in corresponding changes in the operational capabilities and techniques employed by the aircraft. Prior to WWI, the Navy tried various schemes for designating aircraft. In the early period of naval aviation a system was developed to designate an aircraft’s mission. Different aircraft class designations evolved for the various types of missions performed by naval aircraft. This became known as the Aircraft Class Designation System. Numerous changes have been made to this system since the inception of naval aviation in 1911. While reading this section, various references will be made to the Aircraft Class Designation System, Designation of Aircraft, Model Designation of Naval Aircraft, Aircraft Designation System, and Model Designation of Military Aircraft. All of these references refer to the same system involved in designating aircraft classes. This system is then used to develop the specific designations assigned to each type of aircraft operated by the Navy. The F3F-4, TBF-1, AD-3, PBY-5A, A-4, A-6E, and F/A-18C are all examples of specific types of naval aircraft designations, which were developed from the Aircraft Class Designation System. Though the weather didn’t always cooperate with us, we hope you enjoyed the year as much as we did! It was a remarkable year filled with outstanding people, programs, and events from Wintercycle Therapy in February, the Curtiss Classic Golf Tournament in August, and Wings and Wheels in September. Our C-46 got a face-lift, and our new entrance will be completed by the time the ball drops on January 1. We have so many people to thank, but above all we could not do it without the support of our friends and partners like you. So THANK YOU from all of us! As we look ahead to 2019, we are extremely excited about the events and programs in store. In addition to our annual events and the many educational programs offered throughout the spring and summer, we are looking forward to a truly historic celebration. Next year marks the 100th anniversary of a remarkable and little known achievement deserving of greater praise and recognition. In May 1919 three Navy-Curtiss (NC) flying boats departed Rockaway Beach, but only one would reach its destination. Over the ensuing weeks the aircraft and their crews endured mechanical trouble, poor weather, and daunting North Atlantic as they attempted the first trans-Atlantic crossing by air via Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, the Azores, and Portugal before finally coming to rest in Plymouth, England. Next year the Curtiss Museum will recognize this outstanding achievement with a special exhibit and associated programming to shed light on this all-but-forgotten achievement. -

Police Aviation—History INTRODUCTION As far as I am aware, this history of the varied methods by which the law enforcement forces of the world arrived in a position whereby, by the late 1990s, most of them have been able to under- take air patrols is the first attempted. The content is exhaustive as possible in the face of a de- gree of secrecy and a certain lack of inertia. The meaning of the word “police” is, I recall from my training days over thirty years ago, the means by which governments endeavor to keep the peace. Although still valid in many parts of the world, this statement to fledgling British police was probably never intended to encompass the sheer diversity of modern law enforcement. Written in the days of Victoria, it was inward look- ing and took no account of the extensive para-military activity that now typifies policing across the world. For this reason the researching and compilation of this book has been complicated by the requirement to make arbitrary decisions about just which law enforcement bodies to include in the survey. Instances of this can be clearly seen from the coverage of the United States of America [USA], the country where the ground swell of law enforcement aviation was, and is, most clearly to be seen. In the USA there are thousands of law enforcement units across the length and breadth of this massive country, some use aircraft. In addition to the hundreds of police, marshall and sheriff units, each thrusting forward, individually and mutually, in the battle against law breakers, there are the large Federal organizations, most of which give the impression of having other, more pressing, duties to perform than law enforcement.
