Los Celibate Rifles fueron formados en 1978 por unos amigos en una High School secundaria suburbana de Sydney. Su primer álbum “Sideroxylon”, fue lanzado en abril de 1983 por Hot Records, mostrando once canciones originales con mucha energía e ingenio. En 1984 graban varios singles y también lanzan su segundo álbum “The Celibate Rifles” (aka “5 idiomas”) Obtienen aclamación de la crítica, conteniendo algunas de las canciones mas solicitadas en los conciertos. Durante 1985 y 1986 la banda viajó extensivamente, vio sus primeros dos álbumes compilados para el lanzamiento en los E.E.U.U. y el Reino Unido (“Quintessentially Yours” y “Mina Mina Mina”), y también lanzó un tercer álbum "The Turgid Miasma Of Existence”. En la vuelta de la banda a Australia a finales de 1986 el álbum "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang", que habían registrado vivo mientras tocaban en CBGB Nueva York, fue lanzado en Australia. En marzo de 1987 la banda viaja otra vez, en primer lugar cuatro semanas a través de América, después a Europa en donde registraron "Roman Beach Party" en Amsterdam. The Cars se crearon en 1976 y cuyo lider fué Rick Ocasek.Su primer album "The Cars" se lanzó en junio de 1978 donde cosechó un gran éxito de ventas y estuvo bastante tiempo dentro del Top 20. Contiene nueve temas donde destacan "Good Times Roll", "My Best Friend's Girl", "You're All I've Got Tonight", "Just What I Needed" o Don't Cha Stop". Un año despues se realizaría su segundo trabajo "Candy-O" que se compone de once temas en que se pueden escuchar "Shoo Be Doo","It's All I Can Do" o "Dangerous Type" entre otras.

    STUDIA HUMANISTYCZNE AGH Tom 15/2 • 2016 http://dx.doi.org/10.7494/human.2016.15.2.7 Izabela Curyłło-Klag* Jagiellonian University in Krakow UTOPIA, DYSTOPIA AND THE “HERETIC STREAK”: THE ORWELLIAN AESTHETIC IN RAY DAVIES’ SONG WRITING AND OTHER CREATIVE PROJECTS The article explores the infl uence of Orwell’s fi ction on the creative output of Ray Davies, one of Britain’s fi nest songwriters and the erstwhile frontman of The Kinks, a ‘British Invasion’ group. The Davies oeuvre can be placed alongside Orwell’s work due to its entertainment value, sharpness of ob- servation and complex, confl icted socio-political sympathies. By balancing utopian visions with dystopian premonitions and by offering regular critiques of the culture they hold dear, Orwell and Davies represent the same tradition of cautious patriotism. They also share a similar aesthetic, communicating their insights through humour, self-mockery and acerbic wit. Keywords: Orwell, Ray Davies, pop culture, dystopia, utopia In the opening frame of a documentary on The Kinks, Hugh Fielder, a well-known English music critic, comments: “If George Orwell wrote songs, and was not a member of the socialist party, he’d be writing Ray Davies’ songs”. He then immediately checks himself: “Sorry, that’s a literary allusion, it’s probably gonna go whoosh” (The Kinks Story 2010: 3’21). Mentioning literature with reference to a British Invasion band is not exactly the done thing: rockers do not usually enthuse over writers, even if they share their love of words. Not long ago for instance, the frontman of Oasis declared that reading fi ction is a waste of time, and dismissed the whole publishing business as elitist, since it allows “people who write and read and review books [to put] themselves a tiny little bit above the rest of us” (Gallagher 2013).

    Alex Harvey and “The Tomahawk Kid”: Mode and Interpretation David Montgomery Abstract: Alex Harvey and the Sensational Alex Harvey Band achieved only marginal popularity during Harvey’s lifetime. Yet an examination of Harvey’s “The Tomahawk Kid,” based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, shows an idiosyncratic musical style that combines rock and Scottish Celtic influences, subtle textual interpretation, unique compositional choices, and modal tonalities. Introduction The academic study of popular music oscillates between two preoccupations. On one hand, the dogmas of sub-cultural theory still influence popular music discourse and general cultural theory to a great degree. On the other hand, this discourse cannot escape the parameters of its label— popular. In essence, the two poles may be staked as cultural theory versus popular appreciation; but in a way difficult to describe, the application of critical theory has begun to seem more like an attempt to avoid an aesthetic conundrum— a kind of elevation of the demotic artefact to a height it cannot bear. Ever resourceful, the practitioners of popular music studies have wriggled out of this quandary and into the at least temporarily secure embrace of post­ feminist studies, world pop, and the ethnography of locale; in other words, into areas where inquiry is either of self-evident importance, exotic, or comfortably esoteric. Even if the locale is no more exotic than Glasgow, Scotland or Montgomery, Alabama, or the object mundane, the conceit of the critical stance has proven sufficient. Things change, canons crumble, time has done its work. The difficult “aesthetics” of popular music studies, the indeterminate nature of its aims, is a nagging problem.

It has been a bit of a surprise to me to find that my childhood memories bear very little resemblance to the image of Glasgow as it appears in a whole group of popular books and films. Coal was still being used for household heating, milk was still delivered in glass bottles, everybody smoked either pipes or cigarettes, and dirty-faced little boys ran around the streets selling papers. The lives of all of the inhabitants of this novel just seem so incredibly depressing, and filled with violence and hardship. The main character, Johnnie Stark, sees no future beyond The Gorbals and instead fashions his life around being 'top dog' in the dank and miserable arenas that are the tenement buildings and miserable public houses. Energetic Happy Hypnotic. Johnnie becomes "Razor King" of the slums, fighting and slashing his way to fearsome notoriety among the local gangs. I would say it is a book of its time and although it has stood the test of time, it is sometimes quaint and old- fashioned in its language structure. Also, the emphasis on heavy twin-guitar means there is less of the experimentation that distinguishes the best Nazareth album. Would we have escaped their fate any better? Sign In.

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS June 9, 2012 The Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors of the Hunting Retriever Club, Inc. was held on Saturday, June 9, 2011 at the Downtown Holiday Inn Select, Memphis, Tennessee. I. CALL TO ORDER: HRC President, Mike Witt, called the Meeting to order at 8:40 am. Bob Brundrett, PR Committee, was introduced as Parliamentarian of the meeting. President Witt explained the Agenda of the Meeting and advised everyone that Roberts Rules of Order would be followed during the meeting. After a brief summary of Roberts Rules of order, President Witt welcomed everyone. II. ROLL CALL: Secretary Patty Munson called the roll and reported the following eligible votes: 21 were represented by Board of Directors, 35 by Elected Board Members, and 43 by Proxy for a total of 104 clubs represented and 5 Executive members. That is a total of 104 of the 138 possible votes represented. A quorum was present and a simple majority of votes would be required to pass proposals. III. APPROVAL OF 2010 MEETING MINUTES: President Witt suggested that a motion for approval of the 2011 minutes be made after everyone had the time to read. Bud Wendel, Ohio HRC, made a motion to approve and second by Robert Hines, Southeast Texas HRC so moved and the minutes were accepted. IV. COMMITTEE REPORTS: AUDIT COMMITTEE: Betty Christopher - Old Hatchie HRC - Chair, Cory Botts of Mississippi Valley HRC, Marinda Dye, Southern Flight HRC,. Klub Wytwórnia Zespół został założony w Szkocji w 1968, a dokładniej - w Dunfermline. Pierwotnie znani byli jako The Shadettes, lecz później nazwa została zmieniona na Nazareth. W oryginalnym składzie znaleźli się wokalista Dan MacCafferty, gitarzysta Manny Charlton, basista Pete Agnew oraz perkusista Darrell Sweet. Początki kariery zespołu nie należały do najprostszych – w jasnożółtych marynarkach grali w dyskotekach covery innych kapel. Kiedy któregoś dnia otrzymali propozycję sfinansowania nagrania płyty przez ich późniejszego managera, Billa Fehilly, bez wahania porzucili szkockie puby i przenieśli się do Londynu. Debiutancki album zatytułowany po prostu „Nazareth” nie wzbudził jednak oczekiwanego entuzjazmu branży i odbiorców, tak samo jak drugi krążek „Excercises”. Dopiero trzecia płyta „Razamanaz” prawdziwie zaskarbiła serca publiczności. Do jej produkcji grupa zaprosiła basistę Deep Purple – Rogera Glovera, który zwrócił na nich uwagę podczas wspólnej trasy z tym właśnie zespołem. Współpraca zaowocowała świetną hardrockową muzyką i zapoczątkowała czasy największej świetności Nazareth, których piosenki wspinały się na szczyty list przebojów zachodniej Europy. W 1975 roku ukazał się album „Hair of the Dog”, który przyniósł im uznanie na całym świecie.
