Introduction Four sources from the fourth century BCE state that the Athenian law on the graphê hubreôs covered also acts of hubris committed towards (εἰς) slaves (Dem. 21.47-49; Aeschin. 1.17; Hyp. fr. 120; Lyc. frr. 10-11.2 = Athen. 6.266f–267a).1 There is only one passage, to my knowledge, which may be reasonably understood as referring to such a charge brought for hubris committed against (what may possibly be) a slave: Din. -

The Mysterious World of Celtic Coins Coins were developed about 650 BC on the western coast of modern Turkey. From there, they quickly spread to the east and the west, and toward the end of the 5th century BC coins reached the Celtic tribes living in central Europe. Initially these tribes did not have much use for the new medium of exchange. They lived self-sufficient and produced everything needed for living themselves. The few things not producible on their homesteads were bartered with itinerant traders. The employ of money, especially of small change, is related to urban culture, where most of the inhabitants earn their living through trade or services. Only people not cultivating their own crop, grapes or flax, but buying bread at the bakery, wine at the tavern and garments at the dressmaker do need money. Because by means of money, work can directly be converted into goods or services. The Celts in central Europe presumably began using money in the course of the 4th century BC, and sometime during the 3rd century BC they started to mint their own coins. In the beginning the Celtic coins were mere imitations of Greek, later also of Roman coins. Soon, however, the Celts started to redesign the original motifs. Ratio et elocutio. Te closed fst and the open hand. Empire and rhetoric. Classical rhetoric, when engaged carefully, is amazing. It’s got power, lust, avarice, slander, philosophy, adultery, treason, ethics, invective, murder, scandal, and redemption. It’s also easy to represent poorly, perhaps most often as a loose collection of backward theories from a couple thousand years ago. My goal is to investigate, with you, classical rhetoric in its material practice: as something smart people did and lived. Tis seminar uses the concept of empire as a way to investigate the problematic notion of a Western-oriented classical rhetorical tradition and canon. While rhetorics ostensibly rely on persuasion, they are often sustained or advanced by unequal relations of imperial power and domination, and this seminar proposes that those unequal relations of power merit investigation: the rhetorical tradition does not exist outside of politics or materiality. For those reasons, this seminar investigates texts from the classical rhetorical tradition in their historical and material contexts, offering participants a thorough familiarity with those texts while at the same time asking participants to complicate the long-held notion of traditional rhetorical canonicity. Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th. -

Celtic Coins and their Archetypes The Celts dominated vast parts of Europe from the beginning of the 5th century BC. On their campaigns they clashed with the Etruscans, the Romans and the Greeks, they fought as mercenaries under Philip II and Alexander the Great. On their campaigns the Celts encountered many exotic things – coins, for instance. From the beginning of the 3rd century, the Celts started to strike their own coins Initially, their issued were copies of Greek, Roman and other money. Soon, however, the Celts started to modify the Greek and Roman designs according to their own taste and fashion. In the summer of 336 BC he was assassinated, however, and succeeded by his son Alexander, who would later be known as "the Great." This coin was minted one year before Alexander's death. It bears a beautiful image of Apollo. The coin is a so-called Philip's stater, as Alexander's father Philip had already issued them for diplomatic purposes (bribery thus) and for the pay of his mercenaries. -

For this series, the terms ¡ , 2· correspond [6] to most known basic periods in Nature and society (from biology to geology, including eco- nomical cycles), and in this sense the series F defines the Scale of the basic phenomena periods. -

This aims to take you on an intellectual journey through the works of some of the greatest thinkers of Western civilisation, starting with the classical Greek philosophers of more than 2,500 years ago. In line with the Mind Attic’s central objective, our focus will almost exclusively be upon the great minds of the social sciences – the political, social and economic theorists that have shaped our understanding of the human world. Natural scientists, such as Newton, Pythagoras and Einstein, will not therefore feature here. This is a very deliberate choice, informed by our belief that people are generally much less familiar with social science thinkers and their ideas than their natural science counterparts. This is despite the fact that many of these intellectuals have greatly influenced the course of human history by shaping our understanding of ourselves, our cultures, our politics and our societies. We have used the word “lifetime” deliberately, because reading and critically engaging with the works in this Reading Plan will undoubtedly be a lifelong endeavour. This task should not, however, be viewed unenthusiastically as something to be completed in order to pass an examination or to receive an educational certificate.
