Using the Upm Methodology
USING THE UPM METHODOLOGY Graham Squibbs - North West Water Mark Bottomley and Richard Norreys - Montgomery Watson Introduction The Urban Pollution Management (UPM) studies undertaken by Montgomery Watson with North West Water (NWW)' formed the part of .North West Water's UPM programme within the Mersey Basin. These considered the impact of wastewater treatment work and CSO discharges from the sewer network on the receiving watercourses. These studies covered four areas surrounding and including parts of the City of Manchester being Oldham, to the north east of Manchester, part of Bolton to the north west, Salford to the west and the River Medlock catchment including part of Manchester, Droylesden and Failsworth . The catchments have a population in excess of 600 000 people and contain over 76 UCSOs, four wastewater treatment works requiring upgrading works as part of the National Environmental Programme and in excess of 20 different water courses. Tables 1 to 4 detail the studies. The studies were carried out by Montgomery Watson in conjunction with NWW input to a combined team. The UPM data collection programme covering flow and quality surveys was maintained as a single programme under NWW control. The project involved considerable modelling work. In the course of the studies : 14 HYDROWORKS sewer network quality models were built along with two Mike 11 river impact models and three STOAT wastewater treatment work models. In addition existing drainage area study network hydraulic models were upgraded to HYDROWORKS and reverified. UPM Methodology Urban Pollution Management' (UPM) concerns the management of wastewater discharges from urban sewerage and sewage treatment facilities under wet weather conditions . -

Special Cases MARCH 1979 Introduction The purpose of this Report is to make recommendations for the revision of consents for discharges within the catchment of the River Irwell, downstream to and including the River Medlock in Manchester. This revision has the sole objective of recognising the present effluent and river water quality - proposals for long term river water quality objectives are to be put forward in other Reports. The report identifies the existing situation regarding the legal status of effluent discharges from Authority and non-Authority owned installations within the catchment, details the determinand concentration limits included in existing discharge consents (where appropriate) and proposes the limits to be included in the reviewed consents. The reviewed consents will reflect the quality of efflu ent achievable by good operation of the existing plant based on 1977 effluent quality data but taking into account any improvements, extensions etc. that have been or are about to be carried out and any known further industrial and/or housing development in the works drainage area. The proposed limits are intended to be the 95% compliance figures rather than the 80% compliance figures inferred in existing consents and hence the new figures will obviously be higher than the old. -

The majority of rivers in the city are generally of average to good quality, however there is room for improvement. 1.2 In recent years the potential of rivers to cause significant risk to life and damage to property through flooding has also come into sharp relief highlighting the need to manage river corridors and river networks in a more holistic way. 1.3 The EU Freshwater Fisheries Directive (FFD) was introduced in 1978 to improve the quality of rivers, and to set water quality standards to ensure that from source to sea, rivers are capable of supporting fish. -

This walk forms part of a series of walks and trails developed by Manchester's Countryside. 13 Go under the road through the subway (horse track and footpath run side by side) and follow the path for 500 metres to Park Bridge Road at Fennyfield Bridge. 14 Turn right. At the junction keep straight on along the cobbled road signposted to Park Bridge. For much of the way along here you could use the parallel horse track on the left, but give way to horse riders. On the way to Daisy Nook 15 At the narrow fork in the road bear left, curving left with the road back to the Heritage Centre. Manchester City, Salford City and Trafford Councils Level 2 Hybrid SFRA LEVEL 1 SFRA Final March 2010 Trafford Council Sale Waterside Sale M33 7ZF Structure of the Manchester, Salford and Trafford SFRA The Manchester City, Salford City and Trafford Councils Level 2 Hybrid SFRA is supplied as four Volumes, described in the table below. Readers should refer to SFRA User Guide that is currently being developed for guidance on how to use the information provided in the SFRA. SFRA Volume Contents User Guide This is currently being developed and will provide detailed guidance for Spatial Planners, Development Control Officers, developers and Emergency Planners on their responsibilities within regional and local flood risk management as defined within PPS25 and the use of the SFRA as a supporting tool. Level 1 SFRA The Level 1 SFRA has used mostly existing data to make an assessment of flood risk from all sources now and in the future and builds on the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) Sub-Regional SFRA. It looks at the risk of flooding from rivers, canals, reservoirs, groundwater and surface water and sewers. It provides evidence for LPA officers to apply the Sequential Test and identify the need to pass the Exception Test where required. Level 2 SFRA The Level 2 SFRA provides more detailed information on flood risk from rivers (The Lower Irwell, Grey Irwell, Rivers Irk, Medlock and Mersey and the Corn Brook), canals (Manchester Ship Canal and the Bridgewater, Rochdale and Ashton Canals) and surface water and sewers. It also looks at the impacts of development on flood risk and the interactions between different sources of flooding. -

Date Fact 700BC The salt road approached the area passing Clayton Hall through Clayton Mount, passed Clayton House and into - Clayton Vale . It followed a similar route as the present Vale Street going straight down through the Vale 0043 over Clayton Vale Bridge and up to Culcheth Lane. 0078 Roman Road built through Failsworth 1066 Battle of Hastings 1086 Completion of Domesday Book 1416 Medlock Hall (now Daisy Nook Garden Centre) was built, although the earlier barn is dated pre-Norman 1564 William Shakespeare born, died 23 rd April 1616. 1605 5th November Gunpowder plot at Westminster 1666 Sep 2-6: Great Fire of London, after a drought beginning 27 June 1697 A bridge at the site of Clayton Bridge, Berry Brow ( Clayton Vale) is first mentioned in 1696. Before this an old ford was located at this point and indicates an ancient river crossing that may have been used since prehistoric times. 1792 Work begins on the Manchester to Ashton canal, one of the earliest canals in the North West. It would be used to carry raw materials, finished goods and coal for the cotton mills in the area. Today it serves the leisure industry, being used by holiday boats and supporting a cycle route. It runs through the SportCity area and next to Philips Park.
