Une femelle adulte recoltee dans une mare a l'eau saunlatr~ a sur­ face couverte d'algues vert.es; a Mansouriyeh (village It 6 km. de Beh· behan) presentait une branche de la furca portant une soie apicale supplp.­ mentaire a cote et en dedans de la soie a picale externe. Sa longueur en etait legerement inferieure et elle semblait depourvue de cils. J e donne une figure de la furca montrant cette anomalie curieuse, dont je n'ai pas vu d'autre exalnple. FlO. (T.) prasinus (Fischer) teratologique. II m'a semble que des conditions de milieu defavourables peuvent amener une ten­ dance aux anomalies de developpement chez certains Cyclopides. Cyclops (Metacyclops) planus Gurney. Un examen repete d' echant.illons recoltes en 1939-40 a revele des specimens de C. (M.) planus dans quelques tubes OU je n'avais d' abord pas remarque leur presence. Comme cette espece est encore peu connue je donne ci-dessous quelques mensurations supplelnent­ aires a celles publiees en 1940. On voit ainsi que Ie rapport entre la longu­ eur et la largeur des branches de la furca va jusqu' a 5: 1 chez la femelle et atteint 4·50: 1 chez Ie male, et aussi que l'epine apicale de l'enp. 4 surpasse parfois chez la femelle la longueur de l'article qui la porte. Dans une mare a l'eau saumatre pres du bord de la mer a Guenaveb (port situe it 17 km. au nord de Bender Rig) j'ai recolte un male unique que j'ai eru devoir identifier comme un O. (A.) dengizicu,s teratologique. II presentait une branche gauche de Ia furc3 plus longue que la droite et des soies apicales de longueurs un peu inegales, la soie apicale interne dela branche gauche etant notamment plus longue que celle de la branche droite. L'article 2 de l'enp. 4 avait it. droite une structure en partie nor­ male puisqu' il portait une soie apicale interne et nne epine apica,Ie ex~ terne, mais son rehord interne etait pourvu de 4 soies au 1ieu de 3. A gauche la soie apicale, contigue a l'epine apicale, faisait defaut, et il n'y avait qu' une epine apicale insere'e entre deux petits prolongements epineux de l'extremite de l'article. En dedans du prolongement epi­ neux interne se trouvait une soie situee au meme niveauque l' epine api­ cale; Ie rebord interne portait 3 soies.. La cinquieme patte avait une structure ordinaire, mais l'epine interne de la sixieme patte rudimentaire etait de longueur insolite, atteignant, lorsqu' elle etait ramenee sur l'abdomen, Ie bord posterieur du deuxieme segment abdominal. LINDBERG: Cyclopides de l'Inde. 141 un autre male unique dont Ia configuration de la cinquieme patte etait egalement pareille a celIe de C. (A.) dengizicus, etdont l' article 2 de l'enp. 4 portait une soie apicale interne et une epine apicale externe plus longue que l' article. La furca a vait cependant une a pparence anor­ male ayant Ies branches relativement courtes et divergentes, tres diffe ... rentes de celles presentees ordinairement par Ie male du O. (A..) dengi­ ticus, tel que je Ie connais de l'Inde et de l'Iran. Comme je n'ai trouve aucune femelle et qu'il peut encore dans ce cas-ci s' agir d'un fait tera­ tologique, je crols qu-il serait trop ose de distinguer ce specimen par un nom nouveau et je Ie presente provisoirement comme un C. (A.) dengizicus anormal. Des mensurations des deux individus sont donnees ci-dessous. P 5 ct P 6. inserees loin i'une de l'autre par suite de l'epaisseur de l'article, present· ent par ce fait une configuration si aberrante des autres animaux ranges dans Ie sous-genre Metacyclops de Kiefer qu'il semble tout a fait dcsor­ donne de les maintenir parmi eux, puisque c'est justement la cinquieme patte qui a servi de base pour l'etablissement des divers sous-genres du genre Cyclops. Deja Gurney avait fait remar~uer ce manque de l?gi­ que. A fin de continuer l'emploi de prefixes grecques je propose Ie terme de Apocyclops pour designer l~ sous-genre nouveau dans lequel il convient A2 142 Records of the Indian IJluseum. [VOL. Mais,tandis qu'il a ete pres ent dans 41, representant 28 Iocalites des 152 tubes du Sud de }'Iran (26·9 pour cent), il nes'est trouve que dans 16 (de 8 localites) des 105 echantillons du Nord (15·2 pour cent). L'observation courante que Ie M. leuckarti est plus commun dans les pays . chauds que dans les zones temperees a ainsi trouve une confirmation aussi dans ce pays de climats varies. Cependant une distinction generale a pu etre etablie entre les specimens du Nord et ceux du Sud, tout en ad met­ ant Ie lnanque de caracteres distinctifs absolus et l'existenee de formes de passage. Les points principaux envisages seront mentionnes dans la suite. Les mensura.tions de quelques animaux recoltes en 1935 ont ete ajoutees (de Lar 3 nIiUes, 4 feri1elles, et de Khorramchahr 2 m~l.les, une femelle). Ceux-ei a.vaient d'abord ete decrits comme appartenant it une espece differente, Ie M. iranicus, distinction qu'il ne me semble plus justifie, s, maintenir, et ce nom doit desormais etre considere comme un synonyme de M. leucka1"ti. Les resultats des mensurations de certains rapports se trouvent resumes dans Ie tableau. Bien que les chiffres ne sont pas tout a fait eomparables, peu d'animaux du Nord ayant ete etudies, il semble pourtant ressortir des donnee,s obtenues qu'une distinction de deux formes ou races, septentrionale et meridionale, puisse se faire. YADAV Zoological Survey of India, Western Regional Station, Sect. 29, Vidya Nagar, Akurdi, Pune - 411 044 INTRODUCTION The Western Ghats, an important biogeographic zone of India and one of the global hotspots, offer beautiful niches to the piscine fauna of the region. The Ghats having about 1400 km. long almost continuous chain of hills, obstruct southwest monsoon an(i forms major water shade for Peninsular' India. It gives rise to three east flowing major rivers like Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery as well as many short west flowing rivers viz. Vaitarana, Savitri, Vashishthi, Shastri and number of their tributaries. Higher degree of precepitation, moderate climate and huge forest cover in the Western Ghats supports plenty of aquatic life including fish fauna. More than 60 million years old tropical ecosystem of Western Ghats, having senile topography and many naturally portected streams, ponds and rivulets enrich high degree of endemism among ichthyofauna. Yet, out of ) 35 species of fishes known from northern part of Western Ghats, about 38% are under threat and few are on the verge of extinction. The present work is based on study carried out by examining the huge fish collection present at WRS/ZSI, Pune collected from ) 960-) 995 (Yadav ) 997). MATERIAL AND METHODS The colection was made by using cast net, bag net, water net etc. in rivers; by blocking a small portion of hillstream or by drying out smaller ponds. The fish specimens were instantly fixed in the 4.50/0 Formaldehyde solution.

Abstract- During the entire study period, total no. of 39 fish species belonging to 13 families were recorded, Cyprinidae was the largest family contributing 16 species .Family Cyprinidae was represented by the Esmosdandricus, Catla catla, Cirrhinus mrigala, Labeo rohita, ,Labeo calbasu, Labeo bata, Labeo potal, Labeo pungucia. Labeo gonius, Aspidoparia jaya, Cyprinus carpio, Cirrhinus reba, Ctenopharyngodon idella, Puntius ticto, Puntius punctatus, Hypothalmichthys molitrico, Oxygaster bacaila, Lepidocephalichthys guntea is Cobitidae, In Notopteridae two species Notopterus notopterus, Notopterus chital. In Siluridae Ompok bimaculatus. In bagridae four species ,In Mastacembelidae , Mastacembelus armatus, in Clarridae, Clarius batracus and Clarias gariepinus ,Belonidae has one species Xenentodon .The observations recorded in the present study may provide valuable evidence of slight change in morphological structure of fish species due to the environmental condition in the locality, also a new species have been observed knows as Labeo potail. Hilly area, depth, temperature, turbidity is the important physical parameters on which the fish diversity of area, but the changes are not much diverse to give rise to new species. Only slightly, morphological changes are generally observed from those fish species living in down hill areas of Mainpat.

The top order with diverse species composition was cypriniformes with 125 species, 39 genera and four families. Cyprinidae contributed 48.89 % to total freshwater fishes of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu constitutes about 43.11 % to the endemic freshwater fishes of India and 40.09 % to the total endemic fish diversity of Western Ghats of India. The trophic level of freshwater fishes of Tamil Nadu ranged from 2.0 to 4.5 containing 45.37 % of mid-level to high level carnivores. Assessment of the fishery status of freshwater fishes of Tamil Nadu revealed existence of 132 species worth for capture fishery, 132 species worth for ornamental fishery, 50 species worth for culture fishery and 28 species worth for gamefish fishery. Selective breeding and ranching of native fish species may help to overcome the difficulties of species endangerment. Collection of fishes from wild to develop the brood stock for captive breeding, seed production, experimental aquaculture of fast growing fishes and colourful fishes for aquarium purposes could be potential source of income in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu.
