Saturday, June 3 at 1:00pm The University Mace Symbols of authority and power, maces were originally hand weapons designed for use against armor. Topped by the flame of knowledge, the University Mace has the University Seal as a focal point and unifying element. Tassels of maroon and white hang from the shaft of fourteen rods of black walnut, symbolizing the fourteen counties of the Commonwealth, held together by a gold band, which symbolizes their unity.

The Head of the Mace is gold plate over highly polished brass. Complex curves radiating from the hub in which the Seal is centered reflect light in constantly changing patterns, symbolic of the many-faceted environment of the University life.

The Mace is borne by the chairperson of the Faculty Council.

Academic Costume and Regalia Academic regalia represent traditions which come down from the Middle ages, when European universities were institutions of the church. At that time, robes were a common form of dress, particularly for officials of church and state. The cut of the robe, its adornment, and the colors used comprised a specialized heraldry that conveyed the rank and station of the wearer. At the universities, both faculty and students were considered to be part of the church hierarchy and were expected to wear the prescribed gowns. As society moved toward more modern forms of dress, only royalty, clergy, judges, and academics retained the traditional regalia and then only reserving it for ceremonial use.

Modern academic regalia retain some of the symbols of the earlier forms of ceremonial dress. The gown tends to be fullest, longest, and heaviest for the doctoral degree. The sleeves for the bachelor's and master's gowns are typically open at the wrist. Cuffs are more common on the doctoral gown and the sleeves are adorned by three velvet stripes, symbolic of the degree. The mantle worn about the shoulders, called the hood, is the remnant of func­ tional headgear worn for warmth in the unheated classrooms of medieval universities. Today its colors refer to the school that granted the degree and the discipline or level of the degree (e.g.,navy blue for Ph.D., pink for music, etc.).

The usual color for academic gowns in the United States is black. However, almost three dozen universities in this country and many others throughout the world have adopted more colorful robes. In general, this practice has been limited to schools more than one hundred years old. Among the schools represented by colorful robes at commencement ceremonies are Boston College, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, New York, Oxford, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Tufts and Yale Universities, and the Universities of California, Kansas and Rhode Island.

Ernest L. Boyer Ernest L. Boyer was educated at Greenville College (A.B., cum laude), Doctor of Humane Letters the University of Southern California (M.A., Ph.D.), and the University of Iowa (post-doctoral study). A specialist in speech pathology and forensics, he taught at Loyola University of Los Angeles, served as academic dean of Upland (California) College, and directed the commis­ sion to Improve the Education of Teachers of the Western College Association and the Center for Coordinated Education of the University of California at Santa Barbara. In 1965 Dr. Boyer went to the State University of New York system (the largest in the nation), where he was executive dean, vice chancellor,

and, for seven years (1970-77), Chancellor. From 1977 to 1979 he served 1 as U.S. commissioner of education. In 1979, Dr. Boyer assumed his l current position as president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Ad- r vancement of Teaching. He is also a senior fellow of the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University. An innovative educator, Dr. Boyer, while chancellor at SUNY, insti­ tuted a number of reviews and reforms, including the creation of the rank of distinguished teaching professor. As U.S. commissioner of education he oversaw a 40 percent increase in federal support for education. He is the author of the highly acclaimed books High School and College: The Undergraduate Experience in America and is prepar­ ing a report on education in children's early years. He served as presi­ dent of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges in 1974-75. In honoring Ernest L. Boyer we pay homage to those who dedicate themselves to the cause of education and the preparation of teachers, recognizing that education is a crucial element in the perpetuation of a just and democratic society.

Charlayne Hunter-Gault Charlayne Hunter-Gault is a graduate of the University of Georgia, and Doctor of Humane Letters she has the distinction of being the first black student to enter that university. She began her journalistic career as a "Talk of the Town" reporter for The New Yorker. She left that magazine after winning a Russell Sage Fellowship to study at Washington University. In 1967 she joined the investigative news team at WRC-TV, Washington, D.C., where she also anchored the local evening news. In 1968, she joined The New York Times as a reporter specializing in coverage of the urban black community. Her work at the Times received many honors, including the National Urban Coalition Award for Distinguished Urban Reporting and the Lincoln University Unity Award. Ms. Hunter-Gault joined The MacNeil/Lehrer Report in 1978 as corre­ spondent-a position she still holds. While with MacNeil/Lehrer she has been given such recognition as the Good Housekeeping Broadcast Pesonality of the Year Award, the American Women in Radio and Television Award, two awards from the Corporation for Public Broad­ casting for excellence in local programming, and the Woman of Achievement Award from the American Society of University Women (New York Chapter). Most recently she received two national Emmy Awards: one for Outstanding Coverage of a Single Breaking News Story, and the other for Outstanding Background/Analysis of a Single Current Story. Ms. Hunter-Gault has also received the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism. In recognizing Charlayne Hunter-Gault we honor those who devote their careers to the maintenance of the free and responsible press so necessary to a democratic society.

2 Philip W. Johnston Philip W. Johnston, a native of Chelsea, Massachusetts, received his Doctor of Humane Letters education at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (B.A.) and at the Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University (M.P.A.). He began his career as a child welfare social worker with the Massachu­ setts Division of Child Guardianship. In 1969 he became co-founder and executive director of the Robert F. Kennedy Action Corps, a private, non-profit children's service agency, which worked to improve condi­ tions for foster children and develop alternatives for juvenile offenders. In 1974 Philip Johnston was elected to represent the 4th Plymouth District in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Reelected four times, he served on the Committee on Human Services and the Com­ mittee on Housing and Urban Development, and was chair of the Subcommittee on Children in Need of Services. He left the legislature to become director of the Governor's Office of Human Resources in 1982. In 1984, Mr. Johnston was appointed secretary of human services by Governor MichaelS. Dukakis. The Executive Office of Human Services oversees seventeen health, social service, and criminal justice agencies and is responsible for more than half the Commonwealth's budget. Secretary Johnston has been an advocate for reform of the state's mental health system, and he has helped develop comprehensive day-care programs and provided leadership in the attack on the problem of homelessness. He was vital to the passage of the Health Security Act, has taken the initiative in response to the AIDS epidemic, and helped devise the state's innovative Employment and Training (ET) Program. By honoring Philip W. Johnston, we pay our respects to all who devote their lives to the public good in social-service work.

C. Everett Koop Dr. C. Everett Koop was born in Brooklyn, New York, and received his Doctor of Science education at Dartmouth College (A.B.), Cornell University (M.D.), and The University of Pennsylvania (Sc.D.). He served his internship at Pennsylvania Hospital, and became surgeon-in-chief at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 1948. He was named professor of pediatric surgery in the School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania in 1959 and professor of pediatrics in 1971. Dr. Koop was appointed deputy assistant secretary for health in the United States Public Health Service (PHS) early in 1981 and sworn in later that year as surgeon general-which position he will hold until this coming July, when he plans to step down. He was appointed to the additional position of director of the Office of International Health in 1982. As surgeon general, Dr. Koop advises the public on health matters such as smoking, diet and nutrition, environmental hazards, and the importance of immunization and disease prevention. He oversees the activities of the 6,000-member PHS Commissioned Corps, and he serves as ex officio member of a number medical boards. Dr. Koop is the author of more than 200 articles and books on surgical physiology, biomedical ethics, neonatal surgery, and pediatric surgery. He has been given numerous honors and awards, among them the Denis Brown Gold Medal of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons, the William E. Ladd Gold Medal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Order of Duarte, Sanchez, and Mella of the Dominican Republic, the Medal of the Legion of Honor of France, and the Public Health Service Distinguished Service Medal. By honoring Dr. C. Everett Koop, we pay homage to those in the medical professions-particularly in the areas of public health-who lead and labor to insure the health and well-being of their fellow citizens.

Margaret E. Kuhn Margaret E. Kuhn received her B.A. from Flora Stone Mather College of Doctor of Laws Case Western Reserve University in 1926 and was given that institu­ tion's Distinguished Alumni Award in 1981. She did graduate work at Temple University, the University of Southern California, the Univer­ sity of Hawaii, San Francisco Theological Seminary, and LaSalle College in Philadelphia. During her career, Ms. Kuhn worked for the YWCA in Cleveland and Philadelphia; the YWCA national staff in New York; and the General Alliance of Unitarian Women in Boston. She also held positions in the United Presbyterian Office of Church and Society and the Division of

Church and Race of the Presbyterian Church. She was compelled to 1 take mandatory retirement in 1970. After her retirement, Ms. Kuhn ] organized the Gray Panthers, a nationally recognized advocate group for elder citizens, of which she is the National Convener. She has worked with the Retired Professional Action Group, which joined the Gray Panthers in 1973; she was an organizer of the Action Alliance of Senior Citizens of Greater Philadelphia; and she was a member of President Carter's Commission on Mental Health, 1978-80. Ms. Kuhn was the editor of Social Progress and is the author of You Can't Be Human Alone, Let's Get Out There and Do Something about Injustice, and Maggie Kuhn on Aging. She has been the subject of two documentary films: Aging in America and Maggie Kuhn: Wrinkled Radical. She is a board member of several organizations, including the National Senior Citizen Law Center, the National Advisory Board on Health Policy, and the National Shared Housing Resource Center. In honoring Margaret E. ("Maggie") Kuhn, we pay respect to the growing, active, productive body of older Americans. (Ms. Kuhn's degree was conferred at the Gerontology Center graduation on May 31, 1989, at the University's College of Public and Community Service.)

Robert M. Solow Robert M. Solow was born in Brooklyn, New York, and educated at Doctor of Science Harvard University (A.B., M.A., Ph.D.), where he was awarded the David A. Wells Prize upon receipt of his doctorate. He also studied at Columbia University as a Social Science Research Council pre-doctoral fellow. He joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technol­ ogy in 1950, rising to the rank of professor of economics by 1957. He was appointed an institute professor in 1973, and in 1977-78, a faculty committee selected him to receive the James R. Killian, Jr., Faculty Achievement Award. He was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in 1957-58 and George Eastman visiting professor at Balliol College of Oxford University in 1968-69. In 1987 Dr. Solow joined a select company, including two of his colleagues in the MIT Economics Department, when he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Science for his work on the theory of capital and economic growth, macroeconomics, the theory of land use, and the economics of exhaustible resources. He is the author of numerous professional papers; his books include Linear Programming and Economic Analysis (1958), Capital Theory and the Rate of Return (1963), The Sources of Unemployment in the United States (1964), Growth Theory (1970), and Price Expectations and the Behaviour of the Price Level (1970). In honoring Robert M. Solow we pay homage to all those whose native gifts and desire for excellence in academic disciplines advance the frontiers of human knowledge.

4 John T. Williams John T. Williams was born in Flushing, New York, and moved to Los Doctor of Fine Arts Angeles, California, with his family in 1948. There he attended the University of California at Los Angeles and studied composition pri­ vately with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. After service in the U.S. Air Force, he returned to New York to attend the Juilliard School, where he studied piano with Madame Rosina Lhevinne. Returning to Los Angeles, he began his career in the film studios. Mr. Williams has composed the music and served as music director for more than sixty-five films, including Goodbye Mr. Chips, Jaws, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E. T., Return of the Jedi, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Witches of Eastwick, Empire of the Sun, and The Acciden­ tal Tourist. He has received twenty-four Academy Award nominations and has been awarded four Oscars and fifteen Grammies, as well as several gold and platinum records. His most recent Oscar was for Best Original Score for a Motion Picture, for E. T. In addition to his film music, Mr. Williams has written many concert pieces, including two symphonies, and a flute concerto and violin concerto recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra. Recent works include the "Mission Theme" for NBC News, the "Liberty Fanfare" for the rededication of the Statue of Liberty, "We're Lookin' Good" for the 1987 Special Olympics, and the theme for the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul, Korea. In January 1980, Mr. Williams was named nineteenth conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. He has recorded a number of highly acclaimed albums with the Pops. In 1985 Mr. Williams led the Boston Pops Espla­ nade Orchestra on a United States tour, and in 1987 he took the Or­ chestra on a tour of Japan. In addition to the Pops, Mr. Williams has conducted several other distinguished orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, with which he has appeared many times. By honoring John T. Williams we honor all creative and performing artists in our nation who bring pleasure and instruction to millions.
