UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for Protection of Human Rights Defenders Active in the BDS Movement (June 2016) Urgent appeal of 23,000 citizens from across the world to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for protection of human rights defenders active in the BDS movement (June 2016) Dear Mr. High Commissioner, We, the undersigned citizens concerned about human rights and democracy, appeal to you to take action as a matter of urgency in order to ensure that individuals, groups, associations, public and private institutions and local governments participating in the boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement can freely express their opinion and act for Palestinian human rights without unlawful interference or repression. The BDS movement is a Palestinian civil society-led global movement of citizens committed to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It carries out and advocates for nonviolent BDS campaigns as a means to overcome the flagrant and persistent Israeli violations of international law that prevent the exercise of UN-recognized rights by the Palestinian people. We are appalled by the repression adopted by Israel and some western states to undermine the right of human rights defenders to freedom of expression, including the right to boycott. States that subscribe to principles of human rights and democracy have resorted to measures of de-legitimization and intimidation, including undemocratic laws, false allegations of racism and attacks on safety and integrity of persons. Specifically, we urge you to: 1) Issue a public statement strongly condemning all intimidation and unlawful restrictions on BDS campaigners and affirming that the right of citizens to advocate for and carry out BDS campaigns is a right protected under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Declaration on Human Rights Defenders; 2) Undertake interventions with governments as necessary to convey this message and ensure that attacks on the human rights defenders of the BDS movement will cease; 3) Activate relevant special UN mechanisms, including the UN special rapporteurs on the right to freedom of expression and opinion, and on human rights defenders, to investigate, intervene privately and issue similar public statements; 4) Encourage the office of the OHCHR and the EU to extend protection under human rights defender mechanisms in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel to the human rights defenders of the BDS movement. Signed by: Palestinian BDS National Committee and the following 23,000 citizens from across the world. Weather Underground Rises from the Ashes: They're Baack! I attended part of a January 20, 2006, "day workshop of interventions" — aka "a day of dialogic interventions" — at Columbia University on "Radical Politics and the Ethics of Life."[1] The event aimed "to stage a series of encounters . to bring to light . the political aporias [sic] erected by the praxis of urban guerrilla groups" in Europe and the United States from the 1960s to the 80s.[2] Hosted by Columbia's Anthropology Department, workshop speakers included veterans and leaders of the Weather Underground Bernardine Dohrn and Bill Ayers, historian Jeremy Varon, poststructuralist theorist Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and a dozen others. The panel I sat through was just awful.[3] Veterans of Weather (as well as some fans) seem to be on a drive to rehabilitate, cleanse, and perhaps revive it — not necessarily as a new organization, but rather as an ideological component of present and future movements. There have been signs of such a sanitization and romanticization for some time. A landmark in this rehabilitation is Bill Ayers, Fugitive Days: A Memoir (Beacon Press 2001; Penguin Books 2003). This is a dubious account, full of anachronisms, inaccuracies, unacknowledged borrowings from unnamed sources (such as the documentary, Atomic Cafe, 17-19), adding up to an attempt to cover over the fact that Ayers was there only for a part of the things he describes in a volume that nonetheless presents itself as a memoir. It's also faux literary and soft core ("warm and wet and welcoming"(68)), "ruby mouth"(38), "she felt warm and moist"(81)), full of archaic sexism, littered with boasts of Ayers's sexual achievements, utterly untouched by feminism.

Feminist Periodicals: A Current Listing ofContents is pUblished by the Office of the University of Wisconsin System Women's Studies Librarian on a quarterly basis with the intent of increasing public awareness of feminist periodicals. It is our hope that Feminist Periodicals will serve several purposes: to keep the reader abreast of current topics in feminist literature; to increase readers' familiarity with a wide spectrum of feminist periodicals; and to provide the requisite bibliographic information should a reader wish to subscribe to ajournal or to obtain a particular article at her library or through interlibrary loan. (Users will need to be aware of the limitations of the new copyright law with regard to photocopying of copyrighted materials.) Table ofcontents pages from current issues ofmajor feministjournals are reproduced in each issue of Feminist Periodicals, preceded by a comprehensive annotated listing of all journals we have selected. As publication schedules vary enormously, not every periodical will have table of contents pages reproduced in each issue of FP. The annotated listing provides the following information on each journal: 1. Year of first pUblication. 2. Frequency of publication. 3. U.S. subscription price(s). 4. SUbscription address. 5. Obituary "C" Index Copyright © 2004 - 2021 GRHS DISCLAIMER: GRHS cannot guarantee that should you purchase a copy of what you would expect to be an obituary from its obituary collection that you will receive an obituary per se. The obituary collection consists of such items as a) personal cards of information shared with GRHS by researchers, b) www.findagrave.com extractions, c) funeral home cards, d) newspaper death notices, and e) obituaries extracted from newspapers and other publications as well as funeral home web sites. Some obituaries are translations of obituaries published in German publications, although generally GRHS has copies of the German versions. These German versions would have to be ordered separately for they are kept in a separate file in the GRHS library. The list of names and dates contained herein is an alphabetical listing [by surname and given name] of the obituaries held at the Society's headquarters for the letter combination indicated. Each name is followed by the birth date in the first column and death date in the second. Dates may be extrapolated or provided from another source. Important note about UMLAUTS: Surnames in this index have been entered by our volunteers exactly as they appear in each obituary but the use of characters with umlauts in obits has been found to be inconsistant. For example the surname Büchele may be entered as Buchele or Bahmüller as Bahmueller. This is important because surnames with umlauted characters are placed in alphabetic order after regular characters so if you are just scrolling down this sorted list you may find the surname you are looking for in an unexpected place (i.e.

  • Karlstad University the Role of Social Media & the Egyptian Uprisings
1 Karlstad University Kelsey J. Williams The Role of Social Media & The Egyptian Uprisings Global Media Master Thesis 30 ECTS Term: Fall 2014 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to thank the April 6 Youth Movement, We Are All Khalad Saaed Facebook and Twitter groups along with the participants from Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Europe for their in depth input and participation in the survey and interviews. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. 3 Abstract The Egyptian Uprisings of 2011 was established as a vastly innovative media event that conjured the nostalgia of a global audience. This study discovered social media’s role and its initial impact depicted over the course of the insurrection in the country. When the Internet was first introduced in Egypt in the early 2000’s it was distinguished as a marginal leisure activity for the elite members of society. However, as time progressed and the Internet became accessible to everyone it fostered an instrument for various groups to call for alterations in their communities. Twitter and Facebook served as a fundamental communication device for protestors and groups who filtered their message of change of leadership amongst the youth demographic. Specifically, in Cairo, Egypt social media was a primary instrument utilized by a number of online communities, such as the April 6 Youth Movement and The We are All Khaleed Saaed groups. Both groups utilized Facebook and Twitter to inform demonstrators of the march on Tahrir Square on January 25th. This event witnessed a vast number of Egyptian activists and residents who gathered calling for the immediate dismissal of President Mubarak.
