    Part Five: Reserve Information 5.0 PART FIVE: RESERVE INFORMATION 5.1 HISTORIC RESERVES 5.1.1 GOLD DREDGING HISTORIC RESERVE Reserve Description The historic reserve accommodates the concrete ruins, mostly foundation, of what was the Waihi Gold Dredging Plant. The dredging company started work in 1900 to extract ore from within the Ohinemuri River bed adjacent to Lot 11 DPS 308287. The Historical Places Trust has placed (2006) the site in its historic places register. The reserve was created from a subdivision undertaken by Council when it created a number of lifestyle blocks from land it had acquired initially as a site for wastewater treatment; the land was not required as a treatment facility. The site today is grassed over, some of the area has been modified by farming practises over the years, and it is currently grazed by a neighbouring landowner Access to the reserve can be made over a ROW off the end of Lawrence road or by a Waitete stream bank walk off the end of Dean Crescent, an industrial estate off SH2. Location The Lawrence Road, historic reserve is situated at the confluence of the Ohinemuri River and the Waitete Stream on the south western end of Waihi Township. Purpose of the reserve The purpose is to preserve a historic site and allow for future development of the reserve. Use The reserve attracts minimal visitors use at present but will increase as proposed walkways are created by Waihi Walkways Group. Paul was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Massey University in 2007. [email protected] The connection goes back four generations when Edmond Arthur Reidy (Ned) moved to Kerepehi where he managed a flax mill. It was in Kerepehi that Ned Ryan McIntyre WHATS ON: met and married Moengaroa Matahaere of the Ngati Hako iwi. The couple were successful in the 1913 Year 8 Orientation: farm ballot and moved to Kaihere. Eddie Reidy, Wednesday 20 November 6-8pm Ryan’s grandfather, was born in 1918, the year that HPC Community Open Day eight of his siblings died in the flu epidemic and Tuesday 26 November 10am - Maggie Reidy was born several years later (Toni’s midday Grandmother). Year 9 Certificate Prize Giving: Kaihere Primary was built on land originally owned by Thursday 28 November 10:30am the Reidy family and while Eddie loved school, the Toni Brewer Year 10 Diploma Prize Giving: road was too rough and the distance too long to Friday 29 November 10:30am attend high school in Ngatea. All of Eddie’s six children attended Ngatea District High School / Hauraki Plains College as did ten grand children and three great Junior Camps: grand children.
