Wuxia xiaoshuo and pian, “heroic fiction” and “heroic cinema,” have been the main stays of Chinese popular entertainment. As both a traditional China scholar and a wuxia novelist, I have long had an interest in this popular genre. And thus, found it both humbling and exciting that Jim Sales, the author of Art of Wuxia, invited me to write the foreword to his game. I must first confess that I am no gamer. So when Jim sent me this rulebook, I was fascinated by the amount of work, thought, and imagination he has brought to this game and this genre. So let me begin with the “scholarly” part of this essay. The primary meaning of the character xia in ancient China was “to use strength to help people.” It became synonymous with the word “chivalry.” I tend to eschew the use of traditional European terminology in dealing with East Asian culture, and especially the term “knight-errant” to refer to the xia. In China, the character xia, first used disparagingly by the eminent Legalist philosopher, Han Fei-zi (ca. 280-233 B.C.E.), described a class of fighters, as their chief characteristic was the use of their strength to help others. Han Fei-zi disparaged them because he was a “law and order” advocate who disliked the xia tendency to imposed their own sense of justice. The character you, to roam, to wander, was appended to xia, becoming the combination, youxia, as these fighters tended to wander over the land helping others. In my fiction, I have translated youxia as “wandering blades” since I write about heroes who were famous for their use of bladed weapons. From this, wuxia comes to be literarily translated as the “martial use of strength to help others” or, perhaps, “martial chivalry.” But this “strength” was not always “martial.” A sense of balance – strength and intellect – was always a prime characteristic of the most renown xia. Jumping ahead in Chinese history, roughly a millennium to the 9th century C.E., the xia start to take a form in fiction and poetic literature which we can recognize in contemporary cinema and literature: they are armed with a deadly array of weapons and fighting techniques

    INTRODUCTION The wuxia film is the oldest genre in the Chinese cinema that has remained popular to the present day. Yet despite its longevity, its history has barely been told until fairly recently, as if there was some force denying that it ever existed. Indeed, the genre was as good as non-existent in China, its country of birth, for some fifty years, being proscribed over that time, while in Hong Kong, where it flowered, it was gen- erally derided by critics and largely neglected by film historians. In recent years, it has garnered a following not only among fans but serious scholars. David Bordwell, Zhang Zhen, David Desser and Leon Hunt have treated the wuxia film with the crit- ical respect that it deserves, addressing it in the contexts of larger studies of Hong Kong cinema (Bordwell), the Chinese cinema (Zhang), or the generic martial arts action film and the genre known as kung fu (Desser and Hunt).1 In China, Chen Mo and Jia Leilei have published specific histories, their books sharing the same title, ‘A History of the Chinese Wuxia Film’ , both issued in 2005.2 This book also offers a specific history of the wuxia film, the first in the English language to do so. It covers the evolution and expansion of the genre from its beginnings in the early Chinese cinema based in Shanghai to its transposition to the film industries in Hong Kong and Taiwan and its eventual shift back to the Mainland in its present phase of development.     Written version of the lecture Malin Alkestrand: “Fantasy literature: Definition” What is fantasy literature? This is a question that has been debated and answered in numerous studies on fantasy literature, but a quick overview of the studies shows that there is not one simple answer to this question. Different scholars mention different criteria for the genre, and they include different literary works in their descriptions of the genre. However, there are a few basic aspects that they all define as central for fantasy literature. In the following, I will discuss a few different definitions of fantasy literature that clarify the most central characteristics of the genre. To begin with, I want to point out that there is a difference between fantastic literature and fantasy literature. Fantastic literature includes all kinds of literature that do not rely on a mimetic description of a world that is similar to reality, such as fantasy literature, science fiction, and horror (Irwin 1976:55). Fantasy literature, on the other hand, is one of the genres included within the wider concept of fantastic literature, but it displays genre characteristics which makes it very different from science fiction, for example. Whereas science fiction literature describes a possible future with advanced technology that does not yet exist, but could potentially exist in 10, 100 or 1000 years, fantasy literature portrays worlds where the supernatural exists (see James & Mendlesohn 2012:3). Magic, magical creatures, spells, and dragons introduce a world that does not follow the natural laws that govern our own reality. Limitation is a part of magic laws that were investigated in this research, along with the functions of the fantasy and how these elements work to construct a story in The Lightning Thief, a fantasy novel written by Riordan (2005). Magic Law theory as proposed by Nikolajeva (1988) and Tolkien’s function of fantasy (1966) were used as the framework theory. Textual analysis was used to find out the answers to the research questions. This research finds that the kinds of magic laws used in The Lightning Thief are limitation and consistency while recovery and escape are two functions of fantasy served in the novel. The magic laws and functions of fantasy construct the story to be interesting, believable, and related to human life by creating the element of wonder, creating the element of surprise, maintaining the balance between primary and secondary world, composing the inner logic of the story, and conveying some interesting issues..     Theories of Magical Realism Erik Camayd-Freixas The term “magical realism” was coined by art critic Franz Roh in 1925 to describe German post-expressionist painting. It was independently applied to literature for the first time, with a diverging meaning, by Italian novelist Massimo Bontempelli in 1927 to characterize modernist fiction. While, soon, the concept was virtually forgotten in Europe, it was resurrected in Latin American literature, again with varying meanings, starting in 1940. By the mid 1970s, it had become very popular in the context of the so-called “Boom” of the Latin American novel (1967–1984). Thereafter, as magical realism declined in Latin American fiction, it was picked up by many different national traditions of world literature and continues to enjoy a successful afterlife. This has further expanded the already varied conceptions of the term, making its definition one of the most challenging and interesting theoretical problems in contemporary literature. Franz Roh published his 1925 book Nach-Expressionismus, Magischer Realismus: Probleme der neuesten Europäischen Malerei (Post-Expressionism, Magical Realism: Problems of the latest European Painting) at the height of the modernist avant-garde movement in Europe and the beginning of a new tendency in German art, marked by a post-World War I return to a rather blunt realism (Arnason 317–23). Roh coined the oxymoron “magical realism” to describe this new style. Two years earlier, another German art critic, Gustav Hartlaub, had proposed a competing term: “new objectivity” (Neue Sachlichkeit). Roh sought to define post-expressionism as a synthesis of two opposing tendencies: impressionism and expressionism.     1 Gothic: Horror and Fantasy in British Art, from Fuseli to Frankenstein It has long been recognised that from the 1770s British artists began to deal with images of extreme violence and horror, perversion and the supernatural. Given licence by the aesthetics of the Sublime and a new appreciation of the Gothic, Henry Fuseli, William Blake and a host of others explored an unprecedented range of imaginative themes and sought innovative forms of expression. These developments have tended to be seen as simply aberrant, anticipating the irrationalism of 'Romanticism', relating in a rather undefined way to the Gothic literature of Horace Walpole and ‘Monk’ Lewis or, most often, considered in isolation as expressions of individual, eccentric 'genius'. In recent years, literary and cultural historians have re-appraised Gothic literature in its political, social and psychological contexts. These developments have been little acknowledged in the literature on art but potentially offer a means of considering an important phenomenon in British visual culture afresh. This exhibition would be the first to consider seriously the themes of Gothic horror and fantasy in the visual arts, interpreting these phenomena in relation to major political and historical traumas (the imperial crisis of the 1780s and the French Revolution), a radical reworking of the relationship between high and low culture (Gothic novels were the first trash literature) and the transformation of ideas of the self in science and social theory. Each of these developments was fundamental to the emergence of modernity: images of Gothic horror in British art were, in effect, images of the violent birth of the modern self.
