Much-loved iconic cat Bagpuss is celebrating his 40th birthday on 12 February, the anniversary when the show first broadcast on the BBC in 1974. Fans of that "old, saggy cloth cat, baggy, and a bit loose at the seams" will be able to join the celebrations throughout the year by watching HD, digitally re-mastered episodes of the original series at Picture House Cinemas throughout the UK. New HD DVDS, books and merchandise will also be launching in 2014 to commemorate the landmark anniversary. Created by children’s entertainment veterans Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin, also responsible for cherished classics like Clangers and Ivor the Engine, Bagpuss is still fondly remembered by generations of Britons today. Coolabi, the company which represents the rights to the brand, has kept this cultural heritage alive, and the 40th year will see a range of Bagpuss themed product available to fans - including collectable Royal Mail stamps, pet accessories, clothing, and even garden seeds. Although just 13 episodes of Bagpuss were made, the shows ran for 26 weeks a year for 13 years, and the cuddly cat’s fan base continues to grow. Name: Hazel Collie Signed: Date: 2 Abstract This study is part of the AHRC funded project “A History of Television for Women in Britain, 1947-1989”. The research is based upon the data gathered from interviews carried out with thirty geographically and generationally dispersed women about their memories of watching television in Britain between 1947 and 1989. I have used generation and gender as analytical categories, and have paid particular attention to the role of memory work in this type of historical research. This thesis aims to build upon previous work which has investigated the connection between generation and interaction with popular culture, but which has not theorised those relationships (Press, 1991; Moseley, 2002). The shifts and, indeed, continuities in the lives of different generations of British women are considered to gain a sense of the importance of generation in the production of identity. Significant differences arose between generations in terms of reflexivity and around questions of quality, value and taste as generations intersected with feminist and neoliberal cultures at different life stages. What was particularly interesting, however, was that despite the dramatic social change wrought by this post-war period, the narratives of women of different generations were surprisingly similar in terms of their everyday lives.

    ‘Surely the most natural scenario in the world’: Representations of ‘Family’ in BBC Pre-school Television Abstract: Historically, the majority of work on British children’s television has adopted either an institutional or an audience focus, with the texts themselves often overlooked. This neglect has meant that questions of representation in British children’s television – including issues such as family, gender, class or ethnicity - have been infrequently analysed in the UK context. In this article, we adopt a primarily qualitative methodology and analyse the various textual manifestations of ‘family’, group, or community as represented in a selected number of BBC pre-school programmes. In doing so, we question the (limited amount of) international work that has examined representations of the family in children’s television, and argue that nuclear family structures do not predominate in this sphere. Not a single programme in the channel's repertoire is set at home with a mother - which is surely the most natural scenario in the world… But why am I left out - the woman who chooses to care for her own child? In its paranoid desperation to embrace every minority group, [she notes the apparent ethnic diversity of the channel] the BBC has overlooked the traditional family (Kemp 2009).
