Dr. Alexei Nallmov Moscow Slate University Russia Russia and the Seas: Economic-Geographic Essay with Special Reference to Eastern Seas Discovery, Perception, and Use As far as I am informed, the ongm of geographical names of different seas washing Russian shores already has been surveyed during one of the previous seminars. To my opinion, the toponimic (or pelagonomic) survey of this kind can be completed and amplified with the review of political reasons and economic-geographic circumstances of Russian expansion to Ihe seas during different periods of its history. Also the contemporary evaluation of economic potential of Russian sea-shore regions likewise the country strategy respect nearby seas and the World Ocean in general must be taken in mind for purposes of the present seminar devoted to Ihe East Sea! Sea of Japan. As Russian history shows, geographical discoveries and, in certain degree, origins of geographical names are strongly tied with development of the "inner" geography of Ihe country itself. Re-orientation of Russia in the surrounding space and evolution of geopolitical ideas were often determined by changes in regional proportions inside its territory. NOVA DANIA THE QUEST FOR THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE SUZANNE CARLSON With considerable envy, the seventeenth century King of Denmark, Christian IV, watched the scramble to discover the elusive passage over Polar regions to lay claim to the riches of Cathay. This article will follow the fate of Christian’s early seventeenth century New World foothold, Nova Dania, through the cartographic record, speculating on what and when the Danes might have known about the then frozen northwest passage. An essential piece in this story is the amazing tale of Jens Munk, a merchant adventurer in the King’s service. For the cyber traveler, opportunities have reached a new zenith with Google Earth (FIGURE 1). I find myself cruising at 35,000 feet over the Alps, the Arabian Desert, up the Dania Nova Amazon, and to one of my favorite armchair destinations, FIGURE 2. Rather than being disinterested in exploration during the reign of Henry VIII, this dissertation proves that the English were aware of what was happening in the Atlantic world through the transnational flow of information, imagined the potentials of the New World for both trade and colonization, and actively participated in the opening of transatlantic trade through transnational networks. To do this, the entirety of the Atlantic, all four continents, are considered and the English activity there analyzed. This dissertation uses a variety of methods, examining cartographic and literary interpretations and representations of the New World, familial ties, merchant networks, voyages of exploration and political and diplomatic material to explore my subject across the social strata of England, giving equal weight to common merchants’ and scholars’ perceptions of the Atlantic as I do to Henry VIII’s court. Through these varied methods, this dissertation proves that the creation of the British Atlantic was not state sponsored, like the Spanish Atlantic, but a transnational space inhabited and expanded by merchants, adventurers and the scholars who created imagined spaces for the English. -

Before the first East India Company was formed the Levant Com- pany lived and flourished, largely through the efforts of two London citizens. Sir Edward Osborne, sometime Lord Mayor, and Master Richard Staper, merchant. To these men and their colleagues we owe the incep- tion of our great Eastern enterprise. To the fact that among them there were those who were daring enough, and intelligent enough, to carry their extra- ordinary programme into effect we owe our appear- ance as competitors in the Indian seas almost simultaneously with the Dutch. The beginning of our trade with the East Indies is generally dated from the first voyage of James Lancaster, who sailed from Plymouth in 1591.
