Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis examines how and why the southern Italian city of Matera came to be seen as a national shame and symbol of the southern question in the post- war period. Moreover, it traces the impact that these narratives had on the city’s social and urban history from 1945 to 1960. It draws on methods from the history of nationalism, the history of emotions, the new southern history, and urban history to achieve these aims. A range of primary and secondary sources are examined including documents from the Italian State Archives in Rome and Matera, the US National Archive in Maryland, Italian newspapers and magazines, parliamentary documents and debates, and official newsreel and documentary footage. The first chapter analyses the image of Matera as Other and a symbol of southern Italy’s civiltà contadina featured in Carlo Levi’s post- war bestseller Cristo si è fermato a Eboli. It also assesses the book’s impact in shaping ideas of Matera amongst Italy’s post-war public sphere. The second chapter looks at how and why Matera came to be seen as a national shame in the immediate post-war period. It examines the distinct catholic and communist moral worlds which shaped this notion in a Cold War context. The third chapter investigates the implementation of the first special law for Matera. It assesses the project’s limitations and critiques the existing secondary literature on this topic. Finally, the fourth chapter is a case study of the purpose-built rural village La Martella. It examines how and why Matera and La Martella were used in government propaganda to promote official reforms in southern Italy. The thesis concludes that narratives of national shame and the southern question directly shaped Matera’s urban and social topography post-1945. 3 Table of contents DECLARATION Antonucci © 2013 iii ABSTRACT Scholars of Italian-American history have traditionally asserted that the ethnic community’s media during the 1920s and 1930s was pro-Fascist leaning. This thesis challenges that narrative by proving that moderate, and often ambivalent, opinions existed at one time, and the shift to a philo-Fascist position was an active process. Using a survey of six Italian-language sources from diverse cities during the inauguration of Benito Mussolini’s regime, research shows that interpretations varied significantly. One of the newspapers, Il Cittadino Italo-Americano (Youngstown, Ohio) is then used as a case study to better understand why events in Italy were interpreted in certain ways.

Gras, the father of Business History in the United States, argued that the era of mercantile capitalism was defined by the figure of the “sedentary merchant,” who managed his business from home, using correspondence and intermediaries, in contrast to the earlier “traveling merchant,” who accompanied his own goods to trade fairs. Taking this concept as its point of departure, this essay focuses on the predominantly Italian merchants who controlled the long‐distance East‐West trade of the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Until the opening of the Atlantic trade, the Mediterranean was Europe’s most important commercial zone and its trade enriched European civilization and its merchants developed the most important premodern mercantile innovations, from maritime insurance contracts and partnership agreements to the bill of exchange and double‐entry bookkeeping. Emerging from literate and numerate cultures, these merchants left behind an abundance of records that allows us to understand how their companies, especially the largest of them, were organized and managed.

Instead, we tend to consider watertight compartments and run the risk to target single cultural products which could be potentially offered to a wider audience. The photographic exhibition “Catholic Church and Society in the Second Half of the Twentieth Century” aimed, ever since its beginning, to cross these borders with a thematic selection of shots taken by photographer Rodrigo Pais, on display in the hall of the former oratory of the Basilica of San Martino Maggiore. The building is currently in a poor conservation status, although its originary splendor is still visible in both the architectural structure and decoration elements, featuring a large fresco dating back to the 17th century entirely covering one of the four walls of the hall. This place requires a proper visibility in order to regain its vitality and be able to foster once again cultural exchanges.

Vita e opere di Anna Maria Ortese, edita da Mondadori, è autore Luca Clerici, un’esegeta della scrittrice, a cui si deve anche una preziosa antologia degli scritti di viaggio, La lente scura (Milano, Marcos y Marcos, 1991). Clerici è uno studioso audace, e come gli audaci ha avuto dalla sua parte la fortuna, che gli ha permesso di recuperare e leggere oltre settecentocinquanta lettere autografe, che si riferiscono ai diversi e lontani periodi della sua vita. Dagli anni napoletani, quando giovinetta frequenta Palazzo Filomarino di casa Croce, agli anni romani e veneziani, ospite di Paola Masino e dello scrittore Massimo Bontempelli, che le apre le porte della letteratura, favorendo la pubblicazione di Angelici dolori. Dall’amicizia con Pasquale Prunas e con i giovani scrittori napoletani (Compagnone, La Capria) riuniti attorno alla rivista «Sud», alle prime apparizioni milanesi, dove incontra Quasimodo e la danzatrice Maria Cumani, Elio Vittorini e Alfonso Gatto. Queste lettere, che formano una mappa labirintica, permettono a Clerici di ricostruire minuziosamente il reticolo fittissimo dei suoi spostamenti, da una città a un’altra, dei rapporti burrascosi con i suoi editori, con gli altri scrittori; le moltissime incomprensioni, i disagi, i tormenti di un’anima inquieta e vagabonda, che la vita umilia, esacerba, mette in ginocchio.

The article reconstructs the activities of the Cassa, by taking ad- vantage of its yearly reports. The agency was effective in the first two decades, thanks to substantial technical autonomy and, in the 1960s, to a strong focus on industrial develop- ment; however, since the 1970s it progressively became an instrument of waste and misalloc- ation. Below this broad picture, we find important differences at the regional level, and signi- ficant correspondence between the quality of state intervention and the regional patterns of GDP and productivity. Matera is an ancient city, located in the South of Italy and known all over the world for the famous Sassi; the city has been recently seen an increasing in flows of tourism thanks to its nomination to acquire the title of 2019 European Capital of Culture in Italy. The aim of the present work is to investigate about the level of services offered to tourists, the level of satisfaction, the possible improvements and the weak points to strengthen in order to realize a high service quality, to stimulate new behaviours and increase the market demand. Methodology. The methodology applied makes reference to an exploratory study conducted with the content analysis; the information is collected through a questionnaire submitted to a tourist sample, in cooperation with hotel and restaurant associations, museums, and public/private tourism institutions. Findings. First results show how important is to study the relationship between the supply of services and tourists behaviour to create value through the identification of improving situations, suggesting the rapid adoption of corrective policies which allow an economic return for the territory. Practical implications. It is possible to realize a competitive advantage analyzing the potentiality of the city to attract incoming tourism, the level of touristic attractions, studying the foreign tourist’s behaviour. Il sito ripropone tutti i numeri della rivista: saggi, poesie, interviste, rassegne letterarie italiane e straniere. Tra i saggi che si possono nuovamente “sfogliare”, quelli su Carlo Carrà, di Roberto Longhi e Alfonso Gatto sul n.34 del 1966 o gli articoli per la morte di Giacomo Debenedetti sul n.39 nel 1967, senza dimenticare i numeri con inediti di Ungaretti e brani della sua traduzione, o la pubblicazione di Xenia di Montale sul n.42 del 1968. Nel ‘63 venne, inoltre, dedicato un numero intero a Manzoni e – nel ‘72 – a Ungaretti.
