As regular readers will know, there was no October issue last year as I was away overseas for the last quarter. Essential house repairs have also turned things upside down, as I've still got the contents of 2 rooms and half the kitchen in cardboard boxes stacked wherever there was a bit of space, so the paperwork has been a bit haphazard this year as well. I'm sorry, but things will eventually get sorted out. One of our very active members, Stefanie Rennick of East Bentleigh in Victoria, sadly passed away recently. An interview she completed just before her death is due to be screened on the ABC program, "Gardening Australia" some time soon. The biennial conference of the Associated Societies for Growing Australian Plants is scheduled for September 29 to October 5 this year in Canberra. Although I initially thought 1 would be unable to attend, I can make it after all so am looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible. I will not be speaking, but the group needs to mount some sort of display as is usually required at these get- togethers. And, again as usual, as much help as possible will be needed, especially-in the form of specimens of any sort - fresh plant material, potted plants, edible parts, processed products, etc., that are just too bulky and awkward for me to manage on the flights and stopovers necessary to get to Canberra.

MENGONI' Summary Cyttaria Berk, is restricted to Nothofagus on which it is parasitic, forming stem and twig galls. The fruitbody is a stroma, the mycelium is perennial. When the stroma appears it is covered by pycnidia; when it grows, the apothecia develop on the surface. Nothing is known about how fecundation occurs. South American species of Cyttaria have been studied: C. harioti Fisch., C. darwinii Berk., C. espinosas Lloyd, C. berteroi Berk., C. exigua Gamundí, C. hookeri Berk, y C.johowii Espinosa. But there are results only for some of them. The material was stained with cotton blue for general observations. The cytology was studied using propiono-iron-hematoxylin stain. Some hyphae that may be associated with fertilization have been found: globose, branched cells with one or more nuclei in the subhymenium of C. harioti and C. exigua ; sometimes in C. espinosae. Receptive hyphae that grow from inside the pycnidia have been shown in C. harioti; in C. hookeri and C. darwinii they have been seen only occasionally. Conidial stages have been described for C. hookeri. The description indicates their ontogeny is holoblastic. Possible relationships between the globose cells and fertilization are discussed. Function of pycnidia is also discus¬ sed.     September 2005 MYRTLE WILT: A disease of Myrtle Beech Background Myrtle Wilt is a fungal disease of Myrtle Beech (Nothofagus cunninghamii) caused by the hyphomycete pathogenic fungus Chalara australis. The disease is considered indigenous to Australia and Myrtle Beech is the only known naturally infected host (Kile 1989). The high genetic diversity of isolates of the pathogen support the indigenous hypothesis, as a new introduction to an area would normally have a narrow diversity (Gumley 1993). Myrtle Wilt is a major cause of mortality of Myrtle Beech trees in Tasmania and Victoria, particularly the Otway Ranges of South-western Victoria. Infection of root and outer stem wood causes conspicuous wilt symptoms in tree crowns leading to death of the whole tree (Figure 1). The disease was first described in Tasmania in 1973 (Howard 1973) where it has since been shown to be widespread in rainforests. In undisturbed Tasmanian forests an estimate of annual mortality due to Myrtle Wilt was calculated to be 0.61% p.a. (Packham 1994b). Human disturbance has also been found to lead to increased Myrtle Wilt incidence in myrtle-dominated rainforest (Kile et al 1989), although there was evidence in some areas that the elevated Myrtle Wilt mortality levels declined to background levels within an average of nine years (Packham 1994b). In Victoria, it appears that the current disease epidemic has developed after 1973, as there was no evidence of it during a study of Myrtle Beech forests in 1968-72 (Howard & Figure 1.     TasmanianTasmanian FungiFungi andand LichenLichen Chris and Vanessa Ryan As some of you know, my husband Chris and I went to Tasmania for two weeks in June/July of this year. I’ve already given a short talk about where we went and some of the challenges we faced, but for those of you who missed it, here’s a quick recap. First of all, we hadn’t planned on our holiday being so fungi focused. I had actually thought that, with it being winter, we wouldn’t see many and I could have a bit of a break from them. I couldn’t have been more wrong. There were fungi everywhere we went. We were faced with an opportunity that was just too good to miss, so I guess I went a little fungi mad and Chris did too. Two Weeks in Tasmania Cradle Mountain = our travel route. = where we photographed fungi. Here’s a map showing where we went. As you can see, we covered a lot of the state in a very short time and we explored a number of different environments from the coast to the mountains. The red dots show where we photographed fungi. There are 25 dots, but some of those dots represent multiple walks in an area. For example, at Cradle Mountain here, we did four different walks. And each on walk we did, we photographed anywhere between 1 and 130 instances of fungi or lichen. What is an Instance? It's my term of reference for: ● a single fungus or lichen; ● or a group of fungi or lichen in the one location.
