"A Right Strawy Epistle": Reformation Perspectives on James Timothy George The history of theology is the story of how the church has interpreted the Bible. While many other factors must also be taken into account, the church has always tried to define its faith in terms of its grasp of the Word of God in Holy Scripture.1 This principle has important implications for the way we study the Bible today. It requires that we take seriously the exegetical tradition of the church as an indispensable aid for a contemporary interpretation of the Bible. It is not enough to come to the study of the text with the New Testament in one hand (even if we read it in the original Greek! ) and the latest commentary in the other. We must also.examine carefully bow God has spoken in his Word to other Christians of different ages, in various cultures and life settings. How they have understood—and misunderstood—the Scriptures will significantly supplement our own investigation of the text. The Scriptures have spoken in new and fresh and powerful ways through out the history of the church. Tb take but one example, Paul's reinterpretation of Habakkuk's dictum, "The just shall live by faith," rediscovered by Martin Luther through whom it was reclaimed by John Wesley, reemerged as a pivotal text in Karl Barth's Commentary on Romans. As faithful members of the "communion of saints/' that is, the church extended throughout time as well as space, we cannot close our ears to the living witness of the Scriptures through the ages. -

Canonical Reception History of James
JETS 60/4 (2017): 767–80 DOES NEGLECT MEAN REJECTION? CANONICAL RECEPTION HISTORY OF JAMES CHRIS S. STEVENS* Abstract: Canonicity debates have pivoted on various criteria over the centuries. Today, au- thorship, a primary criterion, is complicated by concerns about pseudonymity and challenges to the linguistic abilities of the apostles. Recent work by David Nienhuis proposes James to be a pseudonymous second-century document. Nienhuis exploits the historical silence and perceived neglect of the Epistle of James to create a scenario against traditional authorship positions. This paper evaluates the validity of his argument. Despite his thorough monograph, underap- preciated aspects of the evidence weaken his work. The case against James being the author of the eponymous epistle put forth by Nienhuis is reexamined on a number of fronts. The evidence suggests that the author was in a position of early ecclesiastical authority, one like James the Just held during the first century. Key words: James, canon, Nienhuis, canonical history, papyri, linguistic dimensions, pseudonymity Debates over the NT canon are receiving reNewed iNterest. While there are new methods of inquiry and newer questions, nevertheless, the debates remain the same. Perhaps no NT text is more debated than the Epistle of James. In fact, NearlY fifty years ago James Brooks said James “had a more difficult time iN acquiriNg canonical status” than other texts.1 David NieNhuis further contends, “No other letter in the NT contains as maNY troubliNg aNd ambiguous features, aNd to this daY no scholarlY consensus exists regarding its point of origin.”2 The seNtimeNt is Not new. Martin Luther called James “an epistle of straw” that “mangles the Scriptures and thereby opposes Paul and all Scripture.”3 Luther eveN put James aNd the other Catholic Epistles (CE) in a different order in an attempt to diminish their canonical significance.4 Determining the canonical reception history of James is not easy. -

Isaiah is prophesying about a time that is very soon. God will rescue Jerusalem and then shortly after than Jerusalem will fall. The righteous will survive to become the remnant that will rebuild the nation. The evil people who don’t care about God will be destroyed. As you read through this does God seem unreasonable to you in what He desires? Week 30, Day 2 --- Isaiah 35-36 Here we are in the middle of the book and God provides an oasis. He reminds us through Isaiah that history is moving somewhere and that direction is toward God. God is in charge and He will bring His people to a place of security, safety, and prosperity. Then in the very next chapter Isaiah turns from prophecy to history and tells the story of Assyria’s attack on Jerusalem. The Assyrians couldn’t just march into the city. It was going to require a long siege to defeat Jerusalem. So, the king of Assyria sends negotiators to the king of Israel to see if there is anyway to avoid the cost of the siege. -

© Living Hope Church 1 June 2008 Rebels and Repenters Isaiah 29-31 (read Isaiah 31:1-7) Introduction A. In this sermon I aim to give the sense of Isaiah 29-31. My title is Rebels and Repenters because those are the only two options for Isaiah and Israel--and for us. 1. Isaiah 7-39 are summed up effectively with this one brief statement from Isaiah 36:5: Isaiah 36:5 (ESV) In whom do you now trust? 2. Everyday we each trust someone(s) for something(s). To trust God (and not ourselves or our money or our things) is to bring God great pleasure and glory. He loves to be trusted. B. But, the people of God (referred to in Isaiah 29 as the house of Jacob) are choosing to place their faith and trust in themselves (their strength and ability). 1. The leaders have attempted to form an alliance with Egypt so that they will be able to stand against Assyria. The help of Egypt is worthless. 2. This action reveals their heart toward God. They believe God is worthless. C. Therefore, God refers to them as a rebellious people. They are rebels. Here in Isaiah 29-31 they are invited and commanded to repent. 1. Jerusalem will come under siege and they will be delivered from the Assyrians by the hand of God. Sadly, this deliverance will not endure. They will not ultimately be repenters. 2. I have two main points. Here in Isaiah 29-31 we learn what a rebel looks like (or be reminded). -

Not that the question had actually been settled before, as can be observed from the various Church councils throughout the last two thousand years with their decisions, and the fact that different Christian denominations often have very different books included in their Biblical Canons. Even Churches who are in communion with each other disagree over the question of which books belong in the Holy Bible. One Church which occupies a unique position in this regard is the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church. A Commentary on the Book of Isaiah By Pastor Galen L. Doughty Southside Christian Church September 2018 INTRODUCTION: This commentary is based upon my personal devotional notes and reflections on the Book of Isaiah. It is intended to help you better understand some of the historical background of the book and the theological issues in Isaiah’s prophecy. It is not a technical commentary designed for academic projects so I do not use footnotes or include a bibliography. This material is intended for use by members and friends of Southside Christian Church to help you in a verse by verse study of Isaiah. I try as much as possible to link what Isaiah says with other parts of the Bible especially the New Testament so readers can see the connections in Scripture. In the commentary there are occasional references to the original Hebrew words Isaiah used in a particular passage. Those Hebrew words are always written in italics and are transliterated into English from the Hebrew. I go chapter by chapter in the commentary and sometimes individual verses are commented upon, sometimes it is several sentences and sometimes a whole paragraph. This commentary is based on the New International Version and all Scripture quotations are taken from that version of the Bible. Books of the Bible, Scripture references and quotes are also italicized. DATE AND AUTHORSHIP: There is no disagreement among scholars that Isaiah needs to be split into two sections. The first from chapters 1-39 is set during Isaiah’s lifetime in the days of Kings Ahaz and Hezekiah of Judah and the destruction of the north Kingdom of Israel by the Assyrian Empire.
