    Glenn Murcutt 2002 Laureate Biography Glenn Murcutt is either one of Australia’s best kept secrets, or one of the world’s most influential architects. Perhaps, both. On the other hand, we should temper “secret” somewhat since he has been the subject of numerous books and magazine articles throughout the world. One of the first definitive works wasGlenn Murcutt Works and Projects by Françoise Fromonot, first published in 1995. In that book, she describes Murcutt as the “first Australian architect whose work has attracted international attention.” His relatively low profile can best be explained by the fact that he works alone, primarily for clients who want houses that are not only environmentally sensitive, but provide privacy and security in a structure that pleases all the senses. In stark contrast to many of his contemporaries, Murcutt has declared, “I am not interested in designing large scale projects. Doing many smaller works provides me with many more opportunities for experimentation. Our building regulations are supposed to prevent the worst; they in fact fail to stop the worst, and at best frustrate the best—they certainly sponsor mediocrity. I’m trying to produce what I call minimal buildings, but buildings that respond to their environment.” “I have had to fight for my architecture. I have fought for it right from the outset because councils have clearly found the work a threat. For many designs I put to council, we either had to resort to a court for the outcome or better, negotiate a satisfactory result, always trying to avoid a compromise.     Zhang Ke & the Alvar Aalto Medal 15 April – 9 September 2018 It is rare to find such quiet yet persuasive beauty as that found in Zhang Ke’s work. The Alvar Aalto Medal Jury ZHANG KE Born in 1970, Zhang Ke received his Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1998 and his Master and Bachelor of Architecture from Tsinghua University in Beijing. In 2001, he founded his studio ZAO/standardarchitecture in Beijing. The studio has emerged as one of the most important protagonists among the new generation of Chinese architects. Recent works by the studio include the Novartis Campus Building in Shanghai, a number of hutong and courtyard transformation projects in the city center of Beijing, and various buildings imbedded in the landscape of Tibet. The work of Zhang Ke is always rooted in a cultural, historical and site-specific context, playing on both the sensory and intellectual register. Many honors have been awarded to Zhang Ke and his studio, including the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2016. His work has been featured at several international exhibitions, for example at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016 and the Museum of Finnish Architecture in 2017. 2017 ALVAR AALTO MEDAL JURY STATEMENT In 2017, we face unprecedented instability in the world otherwise mundane materials to rediscover a new beauty at large, and witness human rights in jeopardy in both in it. Meanwhile, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the modernist most associated with shiny boxes of glass and steel, despised Utzon’s white clay tiles and sensually expressive shells. According to Utzon’s biographer, Philip Drew, both Mies and Wright had deigned to meet the young Danish architect on his first pilgrimage to the US in 1949, when he was strongly inspired by their work. But eight years later, the opera house design turned his heroes against him. Perhaps the maestros instinctively understood that their own great legacies were suddenly at risk of being eclipsed, and that a 38‑year‑old nobody’s once‑rejected ink sketch was becoming the planet’s most dazzling and profound twentieth‑century building. Since the 1980s, best‑of‑century architecture awards have rained on Bennelong Point, despite widespread disgust by later admirers that the scheme was only externally built to Utzon’s specifications. After his forced exit from the project in April 1966, three Sydney architects – Peter Hall, Lionel Todd and David Littlemore – accepted the poisoned chalice to interpret his incomplete drawings, and they delivered substantial internal changes, which have been almost universally criticised.
