Jaffer Sharief Introducing the Railway Budget, 1993-94 On 24th february, 1993 Mr. Speaker, Sir, I rise to present the Revised Estimates for the year 1992-93 and Budget Estimates for 1993-94 for the Indian Railways. Introduction 2. Sir, the time has come to renew our pledge to maintain the unity and the integrity of our Nation, preserve the noble ideals enshrined in our Constitution, and, reaffirm our faith in the rule of law. I am, Sir, referring to the unfortunate Ayodhya incident and its aftermath. There are no quick-fix solutions. The future should be built on the solid foundation of our common heritage and religious tolerance, eschewing fundamentalism, which is alien to our culture. Sir, it is indeed creditable that the Railway family remained a shining example of communal harmony and amity. Freight Performance, 1991-92 3. Sir, I shall briefly review the performance during the year 1991-92. Sir, I am very happy to state that the Railways carried 338 million tones of revenue earning freight traffic. This was three million tonnes more than the Budget Estimate target of 335million tonnes and 19.6 million tonnes more than the loading achieved in 1990-91. Thus, a growth rate of over 6% was achieved during this year. The Railways would have surpassed even this target but for the agitation and economic blockade by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Passenger Traffic 1991-92 4. Passenger traffic also registered an impressive growth. The number of originating passengers increased by about 5% and passenger kilometres by about 6.4%.

  • Trains That Orissa Government Should Push for in the 2007 Railway Budget (Some Are Probably Already in Their List)
Trains that Orissa government should push for in the 2007 Railway budget (some are probably already in their list) Chitta Baral. April 20th 2006. New Trains: 1. Introduce a new Tata-Bhubaneswar intercity express via Keonjhargarh. (Needed for fast connection between Keonjhargarh and Bhubaneswar. Also serves as a day time train between Bhubaneswar and Tata, the second most important city in the neighbouring state of Jharkhand.) 2. Introduce a new Chakradharpur-Bhubaneswar passenger via Keonjhargarh. (Needed for convenience of the people living in the newly opened Jakhapura- Bansapani line.) 3. Introduce a biweekly Hyderabad-Tata/Hatia express via Koraput, Rayagada, Titlagarh, Sambalpur, and Rourkela. ( Neither Tata nor Ranchi is connected to Hyderabad and there is a demand from people in west Orissa for a train to Hyderabad. This solves both issues.) 4. Introduce a biweekly Vizag-Koraput-Delhi express via Koraput, Balangir, Sambalpur, Rourkela, Rajkharsuan, Allahabad and Kanpur. (Vizag is not connected to Allahbad and Kanpur and there is a demand from people in west Orissa – Balangir – for a train to Allahabad and Delhi. This addresses both issues. This can run on the days the Vizag-Amritsar train does not run.) 5. Introduce a weekly Puri-Cape express running through Cochin and Trivendrum. (Alternatively the weekly Bhubaneswar-Chennai express may be extended to Cape. This helps in establishing Puri in the minds of people in Kerala.) Extensions: 6. Extend Visakha express to Mumbai. (Currently Bhubaneswar is connected to Mumbai by the daily Konark Express and a weekly express. Visakhapatnam is connected to Mumbai only by Konark express. Konark express has a huge backlog in reservations.
