Ford International Airport Serves as Location for Filming of “The End of the Tour.” Grand Rapids, MI. – The Gerald R. Ford International Airport had hundreds of extra visitors last week as the James Ponsoldt movie, “The End of the Tour,” was filmed on location. Due to security and contract regulations, the announcement was reserved until after filming commenced. A crew of over 100 people worked for over fourteen hours at GFIA, and filmed in various locations throughout the airport. Locations included the economy parking lot, the parking ramp, the airfield, the Concourse B hallway as well as two vacant ticket counter areas. Grand Rapids was standing in as both the Minneapolis-St. Paul and Chicago O’Hare airports with two different scenes created among the location. The Gerald R. Ford International Airport staff and security worked with the cast and crew for several weeks leading up to the filming to scout out locations, times for filming and acclimate “The End of the Tour” crew with strict security rules and regulations.

All the books on the shelves had to come down and were replaced by books that were best sellers and poplar at the time the story line took place. Schuler Books has a fireplace against one wall which was covered up with shelving and books and used as the backdrop for the scene. Schuler Books & Music is one of the nation’s largest independent bookstores. The bookstore boasts a large selection of music, DVDs, gift items, and a gourmet café. This “absence” sustains a forever flimsy ontology, suggests a service in need of provision, and ulti- mately helps to hide that “final signified” which so tyrannically restricts Ro- land Barthes’ anarchic reader. 1 Alongside the “obscurity” of language, the author’s “ob-scenity” is partly the non-act on which criticism depends, creat- ing and ensuring the space into which its discourse comes. Of course there are degrees of silence. There are those authors who write essays, who write autobiographies, who seem determined to be their texts’ first and final instance;2 and there are those who are reclusive to the extreme, such as Thomas Pynchon, or those from whom we have no voice to hear, such as Shakespeare. But what happens when an author “speaks,” and just as loudly as those texts he writes? We today still tend to hesitate to hear it, partly because that word “influence” has been most feared in recent years, partly because we are still a bit deterred by French theory. But he also produced some of the most well known pieces of magazine journalism throughout the 1990s and 2000s. DECLARATION-?O3 THE RECORD OF DECISION SITE NAME AND LOCATION Frontera Creek Site - Humacao, Puerto Rico STATEMENT OF BASIS AND PURPOSE This decision document presents the selected remedial action for the Frontera Creek Superfund Site, in Humacao, Puerto Rico, which was chosen in accordance with the requirements of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA) as amended by the Superfund Amendments- and Reauthorization Act of 1986 ("SARA") and the National Oil ;and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan ("NCP"). This decision document summarizes the factual and legal basis for selecting the remedy for this site. The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board ("EQB") concurs with the selected remedy. A letter of concurrence from EQB is appended to this document. This is the dilemma lurking behind the daily parade of new media acts that we, as citizens, are expected to judge: From co-workers caught mid-kegstand on Facebook to politicians trapped in the YouTube minefield of decontextualized and mashed-up gaffes. But ethos points to a larger concern as well: At the precise moment where technology has given us, as a citizens, unparalleled power to act as rhetorical critics -- when anyone with a laptop and dial-up connection can effortlessly remediate, remix, and repurpose rhetorical acts from one context to another – we are uncertain about what the new rules of rhetoric are? How do we rethink ethos – in terms of character -- for a heavily surveilled, socially-networked age, where the distinctions between public and private are nebulous and all of our previous public performances are always only a Google search away? Concerned that our current, mass media age, standards for judging ethos as character (e.g., as authenticity, as the search for the “real” person) are both deadlocking our politics and providing no vocabulary of resistance to the new media era’s twin industries of information- gathering and surveillance, this dissertation proceeds in three stages in order to present a solution.

David Foster Wallace 89 Getting Away From It All: The Literary Journalism of David Foster Wallace and Nietzsche’s Concept of Oblivion By Joshua Roiland Saint Louis University, U.S.A. Wallace, best known for the novel Infinite Jest, greatly admired literary journalism’s power to keep both practitioners and readers alert, curious, and conscious of the world. Yet the literary journalism he himself produced must be understood within the context of what Nietzsche termed ‘oblivion’ n a dry Saturday morning in late May 2005, the writer David Foster Wallace delivered the commencement address to the graduating class at Kenyon College Oin central Ohio. He sought to tell them why their liberal arts degree had “actual human value instead of just a material payoff.” For Wallace that value lay not in the old cliché of learning how to think, but rather in learning how to exercise control over what to think about: “It means being conscious and aware enough to choose what you pay atten- tion to and to choose how you construct meaning from experience. Because if you cannot or will not exercise this kind of choice in adult life, you will be totally hosed.”1 The speech, both colloquial and compassionate, was the clearest articulation of a philosophy that guided Wallace’s writing and life. A little more than three years later, on a warm September evening, Wallace went into the backyard of his home in Claremont, California, bound his hands with duct tape, and hanged himself from his deck. He was forty-six years old. In the weeks and months that followed his death, remembrances and tributes abounded online and in print.
