Without his unwavering support this would never have been possible. 3 Abstract UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER ABSTRACT All the Queen’s Jewels, 1445-1548 Nicola Louise Tallis ORCID Number: 0000-0002-7745-2764 Doctor of Philosophy September 2018 The jewellery worn by queens consciously reflected both their gender and their status as the first lady of the realm. Jewels were more than decorative adornments; they were an explicit and unmistakeable display of wealth, majesty and authority. They were often given to queens by those who wished to seek her favour or influence, and were also strongly associated with key moments in their life cycle. These included courtship and marriage, successfully negotiating childbirth (and thus providing dynastic continuity), and their elevation to queenly status or coronation. This thesis will examine the ceremonial and personal jewellery collections of the ten queen consorts of England between 1445-1548. It will investigate the way in which queens acquired jewels, whether via their predecessor, their own commission or through gift giving, as well as the varying contexts in which queens wore jewels. In so doing this thesis will establish what jewels reveal about queens as individuals, their images as consorts, and their relationships with their husbands, household and court. 4 Table of Contents By this time, Anne was pregnant with her first child to Henry, and by June 1533 she was crowned Queen of England. Together they had a daughter, Elizabeth – the future Queen Elizabeth I. But, still, it was a son – and future king of England – that Henry wanted. Frustrated, he believed his marriage was cursed and that Anne was to blame. And so, he turned his affections to one of Anne’s ladies-in-waiting, Jane Seymour.

He is said to have entertained thirty head, or master shepherds of his own flocks at a Christmas dinner at Baconsthorpe. He is buried in the south aisle of Baconsthorpe church Sir William Heydon (1540 – 1594) Married Lady Anne Woodhouse. Was a JP. The alabaster Heydon memorial in Baconsthorpe church is for William and Anne. William had to sell land at Baconsthorpe to pay debts. Sir Christopher Heydon III (1561 – 1623) Married 1. Mirabel Kivet – buried in Saxlingham church 2. Ann Dodge – buried in Baconsthorpe church Was a scholar Christopher openly rebelled against Elizabeth I in 1600 and was arrested, imprisoned and had all his houses, goods and chattel’s seized. He was released from prison in 1602 and fined £2000.00 which resulted in his financial collapse. Christopher is buried in Baconsthorpe Church. Sir William Heydon II (died 1627) Died in battle at the invasion of the Isle of Rhe in France.

    book 1, chapter 43 Of Catherine Howard, Henry’s Fifth Wife, and How, after Ordering Her Put to Death, He Married Katherine Parr1 Within eight days, the king married Catherine Howard, the duke of Norfolk’s niece (his brother’s daughter).2 But though the king was pleased beyond mea- sure with his new bride, that did not stop him from inflicting his cruelty on Catholics. Thus, on July 30, he put to death three saintly doctors of theology for having defended the cause of Queen Doña Catherine and for now denying the king’s pontifical power. Alongside them he condemned three Zwinglian heretics, ordering that they be paraded two by two, a Catholic together with a heretic, as a blacker mockery of religion and a worse torment to the Catholics, who received more pain from this awful company than from their own deaths.     Anne of Cleves Anne of Cleves was Henry VIII’s fourth wife and Queen of England for six months in 1540. Early Life Anne was born in 1515 in Düsseldorf in the Holy Roman Empire, in what is now Germany. She was the second daughter of John III, Duke of Cleves, and his wife, Maria.
