The O’Hara Nature Center

Photography by: CJ Reilly III and Eric Parke The Bog Garden: call for carnivores

The Bog Garden showcases native that live in low-lying nutrient-poor wetlands called . The bog plants selected for our garden include mostly carnivorous plants such as Venus fly traps (droseraceae) and pitcher plants () that are native to the eastern seaboard, in bogs, and other wet locations with acidic soil. Instead of getting nutrients from the soil, the pitcher and venus fly traps use enzymes to digest the insects for their nutrition. There are also native non-carnivorous companion plants mixed in such as rushes, perennial flowers, and orchids.

Did you know? Like other pitchers, the yellow pitcher plant contains sugars to lure insects in. These sugars are laced with an alkaloid (coniine) that intoxicates the prey, making it difficult for them to escape.

Homeowners or residents who have an unused, water-logged spot in their yard can transform it into a beautiful bog. Rest assured, constructing a bog garden is not a difficult task. First, choose a site that receives at least five hours of full sunlight. A current waterlogged area or container with good drainage will be a suitable place for planting. In terms of soil, you’ll start by using a mixture of 30% coarse sand and 70% blend of peat moss, , and native soil. Allow the bog to settle for a week...and you’re done! It’s that simple. One parting point though, is to make sure to keep the soil moist year-round.
