CONSERVATION CASEWORK LOG NOTES MARCH 2018 The GT conservation team received 136 new cases in England and TWO cases in Wales during February, in addition to ongoing work on previously logged cases. Written responses were submitted by the GT and/or CGTs for the following cases. In addition to the responses below, 47 ‘No Comment’ responses were lodged by the GT and 5 by CGTs in response to planning applications included in the weekly lists. As previously notified to you, The Gardens Trust, which is the statutory consultee on matters concerning registered parks and gardens, is now working closely with County Gardens Trusts, and the responsibility for commenting on Local Plan Reviews in this context has now passed to Avon Gardens Trust. The Trust notes that Policy BCS22 Conservation and the historic environment in the Core Strategy of June 2011, and Policy DM31 of the Site Allocations and Development Management Policies of July 2014 are proposed to be retained. The Local Plan Review consultation document makes a number of strategic proposals, for example to meet housing need, to provide new transport infrastructure, and in respect of employment, land. Such proposals may, depending on location, detailed siting and design, have an impact on registered and unregistered historic parks and gardens. 1 The Trust does not seek to comment on such proposals at the present time, but would expect to be engaged in its role as statutory consultee as and when the details of such proposals are known. -

From the early 1970s, a small garden plot provided a touch of character to the original Institute building, but it was in 1979 that planning began to really make headway. Land scape students at the College carried out design projects, ideas were selected and developed by Landscape architecture staff in the Department of Horticul ture, Landscape and Parks, and the College approved the proposals. -

Gilman2 Introduction This rapidly growing, large, evergreen, Florida native shrub has medium- to coarse-textured, olive green, leathery leaves and small, greenish-yellow flowers (Fig. 1). The many slender, drooping branches of Anise give a rounded, open canopy in the shade, ideal for natural settings, or can be pruned into dense hedges, screens, or windbreaks in sunny locations. Branches often root when they touch the ground and root sprouts appear several years after planting. This adds to the density of the shrub. The slightly fragrant spring flowers are followed by brown, star-shaped, many-seeded pods which cling to the stems. The leaves of Anise give off a distinctive fragrance of licorice when bruised or crushed. Growing Vines. Jillian Macready. Ickworth, Suffolk. Sometime in 1994 Charles and I went for a walk in the Park; the park belonging to Ickworth House, a National Trust property previously owned by the Bristol family whose ancestor was the Bishop of Derry, one of only two Earl Bishops in English history. From the other side of the lake, we could see the splendid 5 acre walled garden, which once supplied all their vegetable needs. We were looking for somewhere to plant vines; I have a horticultural background and planted Wyken Vineyard and Charles had been in the wine trade but wanted to produce English wine. We were very keen to plant in 1995, it being the centenary year of the National Trust. It was a good time to plant a vineyard, indeed it was urgent, since the English Wine Industry had had several good grape producing years as temperatures rose during the mid 90’s and a planting ban was talked of. This was all explained in a glossy brochure The Vine Terrace at Ickworth presented to the National Trust. Our scheme was approved with unusual speed for the Trust, having beaten all other proposals over the years to revamp the site. This former kitchen garden was home only to a donkey and some sheep, the old Victorian greenhouses having long since gone. We got our skates on and managed to plant half the vineyard with white wine grapes, Bacchus and Auxerrois. On May 13 th 1995 our babies were born, albeit out of wedlock as Charles and I did not marry until 2001. -

Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. A Brief History of the Genus Lithops and Lithops turbiniformis (Haw.) N.E.Brown As of 19 September 2014 The genus Lithops is part of the family Aizoaceae and of the subfamily Ruschioideae, one of 5 such subfamilies of the family Aizoaceae. The genus name Lithops was first described by Nicholas Edward Brown (1849-1934) in 1922. He was a herbarium botanist and taxonomist in England. The Lithops name comes from the Greek lithos which means 'stone' and óps which means 'appearance' or 'a face'. They look like 'Living Stones', a common name we like to use for them. (The word Lithops is used as both singular and plural form.) Each Lithops has one pair of leaves with a fissure in between where a solitary flower is produced. In habitat the tops of the leaves are either at ground level often wedged between stones or slightly buried, especially during a dry period. The tops of the leaves appear to be either flat or somewhat raised and more or less rough looking as if cut off short with a translucent window or window-like spots. The size across the two leaves at the apex is generally ¾ to 1½" in diameter. It's a mimicry plant in habitat with surrounding stones of similar size and shape until it flowers. The Flower color varies from yellow to white to bronze to pink. The natural habitat of Lithops is in the dry regions of southern Africa—from the Cape and Transvaal Province regions of the Republic of South Africa into much of the western coast to central and southern parts of Namibia. -

Heptacodium miconioides Rehder In his last ‘Tree of the Year’, JOHN GRIMSHAW discusses what distinguishes a shrub from a tree and writes about a large shrub introduced to cultivation first in the early twentieth century and again in the late twentieth century, that is rare in the wild. Introduction When the terms of reference for New Trees were drawn up (see pp. 1-2), having agreed that the book would contain only trees, we had to address the deceptive question ‘what is a tree?’ Most of us ‘can recognise a tree when we see one’ and in many ways this is as good an answer as one needs, but when is a woody plant not a tree? When it’s a shrub, of course – but what is a shrub? In the end we adopted the simple definitions that a tree ‘normally [has] a single stem reaching or exceeding 5 m in height, at least in its native habitat. A shrub would normally have multiple woody stems emerging from the base or close to the ground, and would seldom exceed 5 m in height’ (Grimshaw & Bayton 2009). Nov./Dec, 2019 November John Clark, 11/3 Ag Day By Sharon Palmer Karen Gonzalez, 11/04 Martha Mitchell, 11/12 Mimi Sherwin, 11/15 As some of you might know, Ag Day was held out at the Van Zandt County Fairgrounds on Tommy Phillips, 11/17 October 22 and 23. Mimi Sherwin and Louella Iliff taught the first day, taking turns teaching the Kathy Brasuell, 11/17 15-minute sessions on edible parts of plants. Carter Hallmark and Sharon Palmer taught the April Trekell 11/24 second day, also tag-teaming. There were eight groups of kids one day and ten groups the Donna Burcham, 11/25 second day, anywhere from 20-45 kids in a group, so it was quite a good turnout. The kids were Carter Hallmark, 11/29 Sally Mitchell, 11/30 handed pictures of plants with magnets on the back and they each took a turn coming up to the Bob Williams, 11/30 front and trying to figure out which part of that plant was edible. They would then put the plant on the magnetic whiteboard in the area that listed which part was edible. Some were pretty tough December to figure out. Plants such as sorghum, rhubarb, onion, kohlrabi and potato had them stumped... Joy Crabtree, 12/14 even some of the adults were at a loss! The kids were so great! I could tell they were having fun Louella Iliff, 12/16 engaging in the learning experiences those few days.
