It is patterned from the one laid about 1220 A.D. in the floor of Chartres Cathedral outside Paris. A labyrinth is an ancient tool for contemplative meditation. It symbolizes a transforming journey into your own center where peace always exists below the choppy waters of your mind and a return to life with renewed inspiration. The design theme of all labyrinths is a single path leading into a center and then returning out again. All are encouraged to take a peaceful walk on the labyrinth for a time of reflection and rejuvenation. 8 City of Bowie Senior Center Wellness

Tackle Type 2 Diabetes with Weight Training Mark Shields, Wellness Coordinator Diabetes is a condition where your muscle cells no longer respond well to insulin so your body shoves sugar from the blood into your fat cells instead. This happens after sugar stays in the bloodstream longer than intended which can wreak havoc on your health. When you exercise, it increases your muscle cells’ demand for energy so they start using insulin more efficiently which helps get the sugar into the muscles—which is a good thing. For decades, the importance of doing cardio for weight loss and improved health, such as helping diabetes, has been heavily touted as the go-to form of exercise. However, recent research is showing a big benefit for starting a weight-training routine for Type 2 diabetics. As we age, muscle is lost. You can slow down that process or even reverse it by weight training. This, in turn, will help your body process sugar more effectively. If you are not currently resistance training and want to improve your blood sugar issues, look into setting up a fitness orientation at the front desk. This is a great way to familiarize yourself with the equipment and discover which machines would best be suited for you. Hypertension and Stroke Thursday, February 28, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Anne Arundel Medical Center is excited to offer a FREE talk about the steps you can take to manage your health and reduce the risk of developing hypertension and having a stroke. Discover the signs, symptoms, and risk factors related to strokes. Prevention strategies will be discussed as well. Ongoing Exercise Activities at the Center The Center offers a number of scheduled exercise activities including aquatic exercise at Sport Fit Bowie, chair fitness, and walk aerobics. These are low-impact exercises that will help you stay fit and feel well. See pages 6 and 7 for schedules.
