Regie's Rainbow Adventure® Week 1- the Island Of Regie’s Rainbow Adventure® Week 1- The Island of Red Dear Parents or Caregivers, This week, your child started Regie’s Rainbow Adventure™, a program that follows a superhero broccoli named Regie. Each week, Regie travels to a different island where he will meet different fruit and vegetable friends who teach Regie about the importance of eating healthy. At each island, Regie and your child learn a color of the rainbow, practice counting, perform a physical activity, and use manners. Each week, we will send you the story to read with your child along with information for that week’s color of food. Red fruits and vegetables are high in vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber which keep our body healthy. Orange fruits and vegetables will help make a strong immune system, healthy heart, and healthy skin. Fruits and vegetables are so important for your health that half of your plate should be full of fruits and vegetables. Slice sweet potatoes into spears. (You can peel the sweet potato before slicing if you like, but the skin has lots of nutrients in it.) Toss spears in olive oil and spread on a baking sheet. The Island of Orange To the Island of Orange Regie Rainbow did go. He was sure this was the place yummy oranges did grow. He saw pumpkins and carrots all over the place. Melons, apricots, and mangoes took up lots of space. Regie wasn’t sure if he should try these new foods. Then Casey Carrot appeared in his very happy mood. Casey told Regie orange foods are just great. “Just give me a minute and I’ll tell you how they rate. Orange fruits and vegetables are filled with vitamins and minerals. They give your body energy and help you stay healthy.” “Eat orange fruits both day and night. Eating orange vegetables will help your sight.” You must earn your orange stripe to gain more energy and power. Eating orange fruits and vegetables makes you stronger by the hour. Regie Rainbow listened and knew what to do. He ate 6 orange wedges and 9 baby carrots too! Regie had so much energy he could almost pop. He used some of his energy to do a kangaroo hop. Can you hop like Regie or a kangaroo? Try hopping 10 times; it’s a fun thing to do. The power Regie felt he just couldn’t believe. “Please give me my orange stripe before I must leave. You can turn your next trip to the grocery store into kindergarten readiness practice by looking for matching items, identifying shapes and colors of foods, and counting with your child. Cut 1 teaspoon olive oil peppers and onion into slices. Place all on a 1 teaspoon oregano baking sheet. Look for fruits that are normally green, like asparagus and grapes, and find them in other colors for a fun nutritious challenge at the grocery store. Dark, leafy greens, like broccoli, kale, spinach and collard, mustard and turnip greens in particular are packed with vitamins and nutrients to keep you and your family healthy. Try using one of these vegetables in a salad or adding it to a smoothie! In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add ground turkey. Cook and stir for about 5 minutes or until meat is no longer pink. Reduce heat to low. Ingredients Stir in soy sauce. ¾ cup brown rice Add cooked rice, vegetables, and black pepper. Increase heat to 1 tablespoon olive oil medium high. Cook and stir for about 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender and mixture is hot. 8 ounces lean ground turkey 4 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce Spoon even amounts onto 4 plates. Schlosser One day when the earth was new, Nanabozho looked out the window of his house beside the wide waterfall and realized that all of the flowers in his meadow were exactly the same off­white color. How boring! He decided to make a change, so he gathered up his paints and his paintbrushes and went out to the meadow. Nanabozho sat down in the tall grass and arranged his red and orange and yellow and green and blue and violet paint pots next to him. Then he began to paint the flowers in his meadow in many different colors. He painted the violets dark blue and the tiger lilies orange with brown dots. He made the roses red and pink and purple. He painted the pansies in every color combination he could think of. Then he painted every single daffodil bright yellow. Nanabozho hummed happily to himself as he worked in the brilliant daylight provided by Brother Sun. Overhead, two little bluebirds were playing games with each other. The first little bluebird would chase his friend across the meadow one way. Then they would turn around and the second bluebird would chase him back the other way. Zippity­zip went the first bluebird as he raced across the sky. Zappity­zing went the second bluebird as he chased him in the brilliant sunshine. Occasionally, Nanabozho would shade his eyes and look up…up into the endless blue sky to watch the two little birds playing.

    chapter 18 Esoteric Theories of Color Joscelyn Godwin As with Divine truths so also with colours, we see them as they appear to be, not as they really are. j. stuart bogg1 Although color, like music, is both a science and an art, color theory has al- ways been at a disadvantage vis-à-vis the companion discipline of Harmonics. The latter rests on empirical and mathematical principles, exemplified by the legendary experiments of Pythagoras, which have given rise to the rich vein of musica speculativa that runs parallel to the Western esoteric tradition. Color, lacking harmony’s mathematical anchor and its link to perception (e.g., that the purest perceived interval, the octave, derives from the simplest proportion of 1:2; the perfect fifth from 2:3, and so on), is a fluctuating field, even in its major landmarks such as the primary colors. Its definitions rely not on number but on words, whose translation of the eye’s experience is at best imprecise and at worst contradictory. A second problem is the abstraction of colors from the things colored. To separate them and develop an independent color vocabulary did not come naturally to the ancients, though scholars resist the idea that they didn’t see colors as we do.2 Homer’s “wine-dark sea” and the multiple hues represented by purpureus (the murex dye) are well-known instances of the problem. When Pliny, a walking dictionary and generally so finicky in his categories, comes to write of the color of the eyes, the only one he names is caesius, a word used only of eyes and presumed to mean blue, or gray.3 The classical world, so ad- vanced in harmonics, has little to offer here.

    WHITE LIGHT AND COLORED LIGHT grades K–5 Objective This activity offers two simple ways to demonstrate that white light is made of different colors of light mixed together. The first uses special glasses to reveal the colors that make up white light. The second involves spinning a colorful top to blend different colors into white. Together, these activities can be thought of as taking white light apart and putting it back together again. Introduction The Sun, the stars, and a light bulb are all sources of “white” light. But what is white light? What we see as white light is actually a combination of all visible colors of light mixed together. Astronomers spread starlight into a rainbow or spectrum to study the specific colors of light it contains. The colors hidden in white starlight can reveal what the star is made of and how hot it is. The tool astronomers use to spread light into a spectrum is called a spectroscope. But many things, such as glass prisms and water droplets, can also separate white light into a rainbow of colors. After it rains, there are often lots of water droplets in the air. White sunlight passing through these droplets is spread apart into its component colors, creating a rainbow. In this activity, you will view the rainbow of colors contained in white light by using a pair of “Rainbow Glasses” that separate white light into a spectrum. ! They are red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. You can see a rainbow when sunlight hits water drops. Rainbows have a curved shape called an arc. The ends of the rainbow seem to touch the Earth. Yet rainbows cannot be seen all the time. The person watching has to be between the sun and the water drops. But the rainbow is not in one spot in the sky. Its position seems to change. It depends on where the light source is. It also depends on where the person watching is. Rainbows are most often seen in early morning. They can also be seen sometimes in late afternoon. That is when the sun is lower in the sky. Part of the arc can be seen. No rainbows appear when the sun is high in the sky. Image 2. The appearance of a rainbow depends on the angle at which the sun's light rays are refracted (bent) and reflected by droplets of water suspended in the air. Red is refracted least and violet is refracted most. Thus, in the bright primary bow, red is on the outside and violet on the inside. When a dimmer secondary bow occurs, the colors are reversed.
