Can viable holograms be recorded using an ordinary diode laser pointer and a consumer digital camera? How much does it cost? What are the major difficulties? I set up an in-line holographic system and recorded both still images and movies using a $600 Fujifilm Finepix S602Z digital camera and a $10 laser pointer by Lazerpro. Reconstruction of the stills shows clearly that successful holograms can be created with a low-cost optical setup. The movies did not reconstruct, due to compression and very low image resolution. Garber 2 Theoretical Background What is a hologram? The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a hologram as, “a three-dimensional image reproduced from a pattern of interference produced by a split coherent beam of radiation (as a laser).” Holograms can produce a three-dimensional image, but it is more helpful for our purposes to think of a hologram as a photograph that can be refocused at any depth. So while a photograph taken of two people standing far apart would have one in focus and one blurry, a hologram taken of the same scene could be reconstructed to bring either person into focus. -

Carroll and Donald Hubbard ABSTRACT After-ripening is defined as the increase in sensitivity of photographic emnlsions after washing. Following a discussion of the process, and review of the literature, the experimental methods of the National Bureau of Standards photographic emulsion laboratory are described in detail. After-ripening by digestion was studied with respect to eight of the more important variables. The amount of after-ripening which is practicable is dependent on the extent to which sensitivity nuclei have been formed during ripening before washing. The influence of tem- peratures and of bromide, chloride, and hydrogen ion concentrations, is according to predictions on the basis of chemical reactions forming sensitivity nuclei. The effect of gelatin-silver halide ratio can be explained by its influence on rate of development. Variations between different samples or makes of gelatin are illustrated. The progress of after-ripening with inert gelatin plus known sen- sitizing materials is very similar to that under the usual conditions, but there are differences. The increase in practicable after-ripening important quantitative _ with increasing percentage of silver iodide is illustrated. After-ripening during storage of finished plates was found to be similar to that by digestion, but frequently more efficient. Changes in bromide ion concentration during digestion, and in nonhalide silver during digestion or storage, are further proof of reaction during after-ripening, but it is evident that most of the nonhalide silver is photo- graphically inert. Overview of Wildlife Photography The purpose of this thesis is to research the positive and negative effects photography has on animals. This includes how photographers have helped to raise awareness about endangered species, as well as how people have hurt animals by getting them too used to cameras and encroaching on their space to take photos. Photographers themselves have been a tremendous help towards the fight to protect animals. Many of them have made it their life's mission to capture photos of elusive animals who are on the verge of extinction. These people know how to properly interact with an animal; they leave them alone and stay as hidden as possible while photographing them so as to not cause the animals any distress. However, tourists, amateur photographers, and a small number of professional photographers can be extremely harmful to animals. When photographing animals, their habitats can become disturbed, they can become very frightened and put in harm's way, and can even hurt or kill photographers who make them feel threatened. -
Holography Split-Beam Transmission Hologram
Physics 331A Experiment 8 HOLOGRAPHY Revised 16 May 2005. When a hologram is made, a coherent beam of light is divided so that one beam (the reference beam) falls directly onto a piece of photographic film and another beam (the object beam) is formed from the light that is scattered by an object and falls onto the same piece of film. When the two beams are recombined in this way, they make an interference pattern which is recorded on the film. If the film is illuminated with coherent light, the light will be diffracted as if by a diffraction grating, giving rise to a diffraction pattern containing the zeroth and first orders. The first order reproduces the full wavefront of the light scattered from the original object and gives a 3D virtual image of the object for the light transmitted through the film and a 3D real image for the light reflected from the film. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the properties of holograms by 1) making a transmission hologram of actual objects and observing its optical characteristics, and 2) making a diffraction grating by combining two beams of light in order to examine the holographic process in its simplest form. Information capacity: a measure of potential image quality of a digital camera Frédéric Cao 1, Frédéric Guichard, Hervé Hornung DxO Labs, 3 rue Nationale, 92100 Boulogne Billancourt, FRANCE ABSTRACT The aim of the paper is to define an objective measurement for evaluating the performance of a digital camera. The challenge is to mix different flaws involving geometry (as distortion or lateral chromatic aberrations), light (as luminance and color shading), or statistical phenomena (as noise). We introduce the concept of information capacity that accounts for all the main defects than can be observed in digital images, and that can be due either to the optics or to the sensor. The information capacity describes the potential of the camera to produce good images. In particular, digital processing can correct some flaws (like distortion). Our definition of information takes possible correction into account and the fact that processing can neither retrieve lost information nor create some. This paper extends some of our previous work where the information capacity was only defined for RAW sensors. The concept is extended for cameras with optical defects as distortion, lateral and longitudinal chromatic aberration or lens shading. INTRODUCTION The evaluation of a digital camera is a key factor for customers, whether they are vendors or final customers. Schlosser One day when the earth was new, Nanabozho looked out the window of his house beside the wide waterfall and realized that all of the flowers in his meadow were exactly the same offwhite color. How boring! He decided to make a change, so he gathered up his paints and his paintbrushes and went out to the meadow. Nanabozho sat down in the tall grass and arranged his red and orange and yellow and green and blue and violet paint pots next to him. Then he began to paint the flowers in his meadow in many different colors. He painted the violets dark blue and the tiger lilies orange with brown dots. He made the roses red and pink and purple. He painted the pansies in every color combination he could think of. Then he painted every single daffodil bright yellow. Nanabozho hummed happily to himself as he worked in the brilliant daylight provided by Brother Sun. Overhead, two little bluebirds were playing games with each other. The first little bluebird would chase his friend across the meadow one way. Then they would turn around and the second bluebird would chase him back the other way. Zippityzip went the first bluebird as he raced across the sky. Zappityzing went the second bluebird as he chased him in the brilliant sunshine. Occasionally, Nanabozho would shade his eyes and look up…up into the endless blue sky to watch the two little birds playing. -
