Focus Type: • Fixed Focus means the photographer is not able to adjust the focal point. These cameras tend to have a large depth of field. This might include basic disposable cameras. • Auto Focus means the camera automatically adjusts the optics in the lens to bring the subject into focus. The camera typically selects what to focus on. However, the photographer may also be able to select the focal point using a touch screen for example, but the camera will automatically adjust the lens. This might include digital cameras and mobile device cameras, such as phones and tablets. • Manual Focus allows the photographer to manually adjust and control the lens’ focus by hand, usually by turning the focus ring. Camera Type: Indicate whether the camera is digital or film. (The following Questions are for Unit 2 and 3 exhibitors only.) Did you manually adjust the aperture, shutter speed, or ISO? Indicate whether you adjusted these settings to capture the photo. Note: Regardless of whether or not you adjusted these settings manually, you must still identify the images specific F Stop, Shutter Sped, ISO, and Focal Length settings. “Auto” is not an acceptable answer. Digital cameras automatically record this information for each photo captured. This information, referred to as Metadata, is attached to the image file and goes with it when the image is downloaded to a computer for example.

  • Holography Split-Beam Transmission Hologram
Physics 331A Experiment 8 HOLOGRAPHY Revised 16 May 2005. When a hologram is made, a coherent beam of light is divided so that one beam (the reference beam) falls directly onto a piece of photographic film and another beam (the object beam) is formed from the light that is scattered by an object and falls onto the same piece of film. When the two beams are recombined in this way, they make an interference pattern which is recorded on the film. If the film is illuminated with coherent light, the light will be diffracted as if by a diffraction grating, giving rise to a diffraction pattern containing the zeroth and first orders. The first order reproduces the full wavefront of the light scattered from the original object and gives a 3D virtual image of the object for the light transmitted through the film and a 3D real image for the light reflected from the film. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the properties of holograms by 1) making a transmission hologram of actual objects and observing its optical characteristics, and 2) making a diffraction grating by combining two beams of light in order to examine the holographic process in its simplest form. • Digital Camera Functions All Photography Is Based on the Same
Digital Camera Functions All photography is based on the same optical principle of viewing objects with our eyes. In both cases, light is reflected off of an object and passes through a lens, which focuses the light rays, onto the light sensitive retina, in the case of eyesight, or onto film or an image sensor the case of traditional or digital photography. The shutter is a curtain that is placed between the lens and the camera that briefly opens to let light hit the film in conventional photography or the image sensor in digital photography. The shutter speed refers to how long the curtain stays open to let light in. The higher the number, the shorter the time, and consequently, the less light gets in. So, a shutter speed of 1/60th of a second lets in half the amount of light than a speed of 1/30th of a second. For most normal pictures, shutter speeds range from 1/30th of a second to 1/100th of a second. A faster shutter speed, such as 1/500th of a second or 1/1000th of a second, would be used to take a picture of a fast moving object such as a race car; while a slow shutter speed would be used to take pictures in low-light situations, such as when taking pictures of the moon at night. Remember that the longer the shutter stays open, the more chance the image will be blurred because a person cannot usually hold a camera still for very long. A tripod or other support mechanism should almost always be used to stabilize the camera when slow shutter speeds are used.

Carl Zeiss, 32, Wagnergasse, Jena, Germany. ((1847) also: 29/II Dorotheen strasse 29, Berlin, Germany. (1901) and 29, Margaret St, Regent St, London W (1901) The founder, Carl Zeiss (1816-1888) was born in Weimar, the son of a cabinet maker and ivory carver. He graduated from school in 1834, qualified to be apprenticed to the Grand Dukes Instrument maker, Dr Koerner, and attended academic courses as well as working as apprentice. Next he travelled from Jan. 1838 to Oct. 1845 to study in Stuttgart, Darmstadt, Vienna, and Berlin to broaden his experience. Back at home, he studied chemistry and higher mathematics. By May 1845, he felt well enough qualified to apply to the County Administration at Weimar for permission to found "An establishment for the production of advanced mechanical devices", hoping for a relationship with the University to advance designs. Money was tight with capital of 100 Thalers (possibly £100) only, but in Nov. 1846, he opened at 7, Neugasse. It remained a small business for years, as it took some 20 years for the University relationship to be productive, and he often grew weary of the trial and error methods traditionally used in the trade. Much of the production was of microscopes- often relatively simple ones by modern standards, such as dissection viewers. Then in 1863, a young lecturer Ernst Abbe (1840-1905) joined the University to teach physics and astronomy. Zeiss approached him in 1866 for cooperation in the design of improved systems and this lead to new ideas, eg in the Abbe refractometer (1869), a comparator and a spectrometer.

  • FILM FORMATS ------8 Mm Film Is a Motion Picture Film Format in Which the Filmstrip Is Eight Millimeters Wide
FILM FORMATS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8 mm film is a motion picture film format in which the filmstrip is eight millimeters wide. It exists in two main versions: regular or standard 8 mm and Super 8. There are also two other varieties of Super 8 which require different cameras but which produce a final film with the same dimensions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Standard 8 The standard 8 mm film format was developed by the Eastman Kodak company during the Great Depression and released on the market in 1932 to create a home movie format less expensive than 16 mm. The film spools actually contain a 16 mm film with twice as many perforations along each edge than normal 16 mm film, which is only exposed along half of its width. When the film reaches its end in the takeup spool, the camera is opened and the spools in the camera are flipped and swapped (the design of the spool hole ensures that this happens properly) and the same film is exposed along the side of the film left unexposed on the first loading. During processing, the film is split down the middle, resulting in two lengths of 8 mm film, each with a single row of perforations along one edge, so fitting four times as many frames in the same amount of 16 mm film. Because the spool was reversed after filming on one side to allow filming on the other side the format was sometime called Double 8. The framesize of 8 mm is 4,8 x 3,5 mm and 1 m film contains 264 pictures.

  • Basic Sensitometry and Characteristics of Film Basic Sensitometry and Characteristics of Film
BASIC SENSITOMETRY AND CHARACTERISTICS OF FILM BASIC SENSITOMETRY AND CHARACTERISTICS OF FILM BASIC PHOTOGRAPHIC SENSITOMETRY Sensitometry is the science behind the art of filmmaking. It is the measurement of a film’s characteristics. These measurements are expressed in numeric and chart form to convey how a film will react to the amount of light, the type of lighting, the amount of exposure, the type of developer, the amount of development, and how all these factors interact. In most cases, a cinematographer doesn’t need a great depth of technical information to use motion picture films—using the right film speed and the right process will suKce. On the other hand, having a basic understanding of film sensitometry will help you in tasks as simple as film selection to as complicated as communicating the mood of a challenging scene. THE CHARACTERISTIC CURVE At the heart of sensitometry is the characteristic curve. The characteristic curve plots the amount of exposure against the density achieved by that exposure: 3.0 2.8 2.6 2.4 Shoulder 2.2 2.0 1.8 Y Straight Line T 1.6 I S 1.4 N E D 1.2 1.0 Base-Plus-Fog or 0.8 Gross-Fog Density 0.6 Toe 0.4 0.2 0.0 3.0 2.0 1.0 0.0 1.0 2.0 LOG EXPOSURE To create a characteristic curve, we first need some densities to plot, and they come from a sensitometric tablet exposed onto the film. Commonly called a step tablet, this highly calibrated tool consists of 21 equally spaced intervals of grey.

  • Photographic Cameras' Roots Go Deep. Everything Started with the Camera
Photographic cameras’ roots go deep. Everything started with the camera obscura, and continued with Daguerreotypes, 35mm cameras, digital cameras and camera phones. 1500 The first pinhole camera (also called the Camera Obscura) was invented by Alhazen (Ibn Al- Haytham). 1839 The Daguerreotype Camera was announced by the French Academy of Sciences. One of these inventions is now the world’s most expensive cameras. 1840 The first American patent issued in photography to Alexander Wolcott for his camera. 1859 The panoramic camera patented by Thomas Sutton. 1861 Oliver Wendell Holmes invents stereoscope viewer. 1888 George Eastman patents Kodak roll-film camera. Eastman was a pioneer in photographic films usage. He also started manufacturing paper films in 1885. His first Kodak box camera was very simple and very cheap. 1900 First mass-marketed camera – the Brownie was presented by Eastman. It was on sale until 1960s. 1900 The Raisecamera (travel camera) was invented. Extreme light weight and small dimensions when it is folded made this photo camera the most desirable thing for landscape photographers. 1913/1914 The first 35mm still camera (also called candid camera ) developed by Oskar Barnack of German Leica Camera. Later it became the standard for all film cameras. 1948 Edwin Land invented the Polaroid camera which could take a picture and print it in about one minute. 1978 Konica introduces the first point-and-shoot, autofocus camera Konica C35 AF. It was named “Jasupin”. 1981 Sony demonstrates the Sony Mavica – the world’s first digital electronic still camera. Digital photography and television images are related to the same technology, so this camera recorded images into a mini disk and then put them into a video reader.
