La Parola showcases articles written by the students and faculty in order to display the many exciting things which have taken place throughout the year. It allows students to talk about their experiences here at the Angelicum, or how it has impacted their lives. The theme this year is “Per il Futuro” which was inspired by the vision laid out by our rector in his Dies Academicus address last fall (you can read more inside)! It is exciting to already see great improvements being made in the cortile as well as in other parts of the university. La Parola has been redesigned this year in order to bring a fresh, modern, and classy look to the magazine, as well as to create continuity with the other media outlets of the Angelicum. I am pleased to introduce some exciting news! The Angelicum development office is glad to announce a new version of their own magazine, now renamed The Angelicum. This new magazine, mainly intended for benefactors and friends of the university, will feature articles from La Parola which is a great opportunity for students to show friends and alumni the exciting things Ohappening at the Angelicum. Michał Paluch O.P. Iniziamo in un modo Tomistico. Quali sono i suoi Mi piace tradurre in pratica la nostra missione tomista con l’aiuto delle tre “syns”: sintesi, obiettivi? sintonia, sinergia. Il tomismo ci dà la “colonna vertebrale” che ci permette di mettere insieme tutti gli elementi cruciali della nostra comprensione del mondo: questa è la “sintesi”. È molto Rispondo con una frase: dovremmo essere la importante iniziare con questa “colonna” nel nostro mondo post-moderno, post-liberale, migliore istituzione Tomista al mondo. “post-tutto”. Ma il tomismo è anche sulla ricerca della nostra identità che condividiamo con gli altri - sintonia. Non è esagerato dire che dovremmo essere la migliore istituzione tomista al mondo? Non dovrebbe essere sufficiente la sintesi? Abbiamo davvero bisogno di tre “syns”? La Summa Theologiae sembra essere prima di tutto una sorta di Beh, niente affatto. Se siamo nel cuore di Roma e sintesi ... abbiamo l’Ordine domenicano come fondamento della nostra missione, questo dovrebbe essere Per continuare con un gioco di parole, direi che la prima parte di tutte e tre le parole - il per noi uno scopo ovvio - anzi, questo è il nostro “syn” - ci aiuta a capire che, alla fine, stiamo parlando di un ideale. Le tre “syn” si includono destino. Ma dovremmo capire tutto questo l’un l’altro. Se lottiamo per la sintesi, in modo corretto, porterà con sé sintonia e sinergia. E correttamente. Ciò non significa che avremo viceversa. Tuttavia, è utile articolare tutti questi aspetti perché in tal modo potremmo capire sempre qui a Roma persone famose. Dovremmo meglio l’importanza delle diverse parti del nostro progetto comune. Abbiamo bisogno che avere un forte gruppo centrale di professori sul l’Istituto Tomistico ispiri la nostra capacità di sintesi. Ma abbiamo bisogno della sezione per posto, ma dovremmo inoltre raggiungere questo l’ecumenismo e il dialogo interreligioso - in futuro anche l’Istituto per gli studi ecumenici scopo attraverso il collegamento in rete con molte e, chissà, forse anche un istituto per studi interreligiosi - per sviluppare le nostre capacità in persone e istituzioni nel mondo. sintonia. Se teniamo a mente che la obiettivo per la nostra educazione nella missione principale della nostra istituzione è quella di preparare i futuri leader per la Chiesa vita pratica? e la società, un tale ideale - articolato in tutte quelle dimensioni fondamentali - può aiutarci a LA PAROLA | ISSUE 01 4 svolgere il nostro compito nel miglior modo possibile. Quali sono le principali sfide che vede davanti a noi? Penso che considerando tutte le opportunità che abbiamo, non dovremmo concentrarci solo sull’insegnamento, anche se è una parte molto importante della nostra missione, ma dovremmo anche trovare il coraggio di affrontare insieme le questioni cruciali dei nostri giorni - lavorando come intera comunità universitaria. E’ questo il motivo per cui sono così felice che abbiamo avuto il nostro Dies Academicus, per riflettere insieme sulla nostra missione, e la nostra prima conferenza inter-facoltà, COM-UNI-TAS, incentrata sul bene comune. Sono molto grato a tutti i professori e studenti che hanno investito il loro tempo in questi progetti. Siamo piuttosto piccoli (sic!), e abbastanza diversi, da lavorare di volta in volta come una squadra. Ma abbiamo bisogno di scoprire la forza e la bellezza di questi progetti. Sarà sempre allettante preferire organizzare conferenze con “ospiti famosi” esterni che potremo invitare nella nostra Università. Anche questi progetti sono importanti, e dovremmo intraprenderli - vogliamo offrire ai nostri studenti tutto ciò che di meglio possiamo, ovvero i migliori esperti di tutto il mondo, e sono felice che il numero dei nostri eventi di questo tipo sia in aumento. Ma sono anche convinto che provocheremo un nuovo dinamismo nella nostra vita accademica se impariamo anche a usare meglio le risorse che abbiamo a disposizione all’interno della nostra Università - se impariamo ad ascoltarci l’un l’altro e ad imparare dall’altro. Alla (Photo Credit: Angelicum Flickr) fine, la nostra formazione intellettuale non è solo, né prima di tutto, una quantità di conoscenza che vogliamo caricare nelle teste dei nostri studenti; piuttosto, riguarda gli atteggiamenti nei confronti della realtà e tra di loro, che vogliamo che scoprano. Spero che potremo continuare le conferenze inter-facoltà in futuro e che si svilupperanno con il tempo in progetti di ricerca e amicizie tra le facoltà. Qualche altra sfida? Potrebbe scendere ad un livello più operativo? Siamo onesti, la vita del rettore si svolge ad un livello molto operativo ... C’è una parte hard di esso - i progetti di ristrutturazione. Come sapete, stiamo continuando a rinnovare i nostri edifici. In questo momento stiamo lavorando su una parte che è quasi invisibile ai nostri studenti, sebbene sia molto importante per il nostro progetto; se vogliamo svilupparci, abbiamo bisogno di condizioni di vita decenti per i frati domenicani che sono tra i nostri professori. Abbiamo appena terminato la ristrutturazione della terza ala del convento; ora dobbiamo preparare il progetto per la quarta ala. In futuro, la parte più urgente e complicata della ristrutturazione sarà la nostra biblioteca. Il team della biblioteca sta attualmente lavorando a un progetto per questo. Siamo stati in grado di introdurre alcuni miglioramenti importanti (proiettori) nelle nostre aule durante la scorsa estate, ma, come tutti sappiamo, il loro rinnovamento integrale deve ancora essere fatto. C’è anche una parte soft del lavoro del Rettore: i nostri problemi pratici che dobbiamo affrontare. Il Segretario Generale, con il suo team, sta lavorando duramente per preparare un sistema di registrazione online e per migliorare la nostra comunicazione. Sono sicuro che i primi risultati dei suoi sforzi vi sono visibili, ma i passi decisivi sono ancora da compiere. Abbiamo bisogno di un bel pensiero per la conclusione ... Ebbene, don Friedrich Bechina della Congregazione per l’Educazione Cattolica, nel suo discorso iniziale durante il Dies Academicus, ci ha ricordato che dovremmo riscoprire la profonda gioia della nostra missione.

    Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal 2007, vol. 2 The Dominicans and Cloistered Women: The Convent of Sant’Aurea in Rome Anne Dunlop n 1358, the artist Lippo Vanni of Siena signed and dated a triptych Inow in the buildings of the Roman Dominican community of Santi Domenico e Sisto (fig. 1).1 The center panel shows the Virgin holding the standing Christ Child while two angels hold a cloth of honor behind their heads. At Mary’s right hand is Saint Dominic, head of the Dominican Order, labeled “DOMINICUS” at his feet and holding a red book and a lily. To her left is a female saint dressed in red and purple, her only attribute a large vase. An area of loss cuts this figure in half, further straining iden- tification, but she is labeled “SCA AURA” at her feet. Perhaps the oddest feature is a small figure of Eve at the Virgin’s feet. Seated with her back to the viewer, Eve is dressed in fur, and she gestures to a blonde, female- headed serpent with her right hand. Below her is a small zone that func- tions like a predella, where the Man of Sorrows is flanked by bust-length images of a second Dominican friar at his right and a bearded saint with a book and a large knife at the left. The friar is identified by the words on the open book he holds, “Veritatem meditabitur guttur meum,” the first words of the Summa contra gentiles of Thomas Aquinas. The iconography is found in other Sienese images of Thomas, while the saint with the knife follows Sienese conventions for the apostle Bartholomew.

    THE SANTISSIMA ANNUNZIATA OF FLORENCE, MEDICI PORTRAITS, AND THE COUNTER REFORMATION IN ITALY by Bernice Ida Maria Iarocci A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art University of Toronto © Copyright by Bernice Iarocci 2015 THE SANTISSIMA ANNUNZIATA OF FLORENCE, MEDICI PORTRAITS, AND THE COUNTER REFORMATION IN ITALY Bernice Ida Maria Iarocci Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art University of Toronto 2015 A defining feature of the Counter-Reformation period is the new impetus given to the material expression of devotion to sacred images and relics. There are nonetheless few scholarly studies that look deeply into the shrines of venerated images, as they were renovated or decorated anew during this period. This dissertation investigates an image cult that experienced a particularly rich elaboration during the Counter-Reformation – that of the miracle-working fresco called the Nunziata, located in the Servite church of the Santissima Annunziata in Florence. By the end of the fifteenth century, the Nunziata had become the primary sacred image in the city of Florence and one of the most venerated Marian cults in Italy. My investigation spans around 1580 to 1650, and includes texts related to the sacred fresco, copies made after it, votives, and other additions made within and around its shrine. I address various components of the cult that carry meanings of civic importance; nonetheless, one of its crucial characteristics is that it partook of general agendas belonging to the Counter- Reformation movement. That is, it would be myopic to remain within a strictly local scope when considering this period.

    WALTER PADOVANI DIGITAL CATALOGUE 2020 Across Myths, Allegories and Religious Themes We are delighted to present a selection of works that touch on a variety of subjects, but which can be defined by the theme of the sacred and the profane. The allegories of Justice and Peace are represented both by a terracotta bozzetto by Canova’s favourite pupil, Rinaldo Rinaldi (1793-1873) and by two figures in bronze by Francesco Righetti (1748-1819), from models by the Genoese sculptor Francesco Maria Ravaschio (1743-1820). In both these cases the sculptors make use of iconographical attributes to identify their personifications, Rinaldi being the more didactic whilst Ravaschio eschews the usual sword and scales to represent Justice preferring to make use of the Lictors’ fasces. Sculpture, therefore, plays a dominant role in our presentation and this is further illustrated by another piece worthy of mention, the marble Genius of the Hunt by the Milanese sculptor Pompeo Marchesi (1790-1858), probably commissioned by the Russian noblewoman Julija Samojlova who had a grand passion for hunting art. Nevertheless, we also have guest appearances by some paintings, such as our Jupiter and Semele, work of one of the most famous names in Bologna in the late 18th century, Gaetano Gandolfi (1734–1803). This small canvas, with its fluid but compact brushstrokes, captures the culminating moment in the mythological tale, when Jupiter, astride an eagle, appears before his lover Semele wielding in his hand the thunderbolt which will kill her. We move away from mythological works with an early 17th century Italo-Flemish Cristo Vivo bronze, with gilt bronze crown of thorns and perizoma, probably intended for private devotion.

In my dissertation, I conduct a comparative study of these women’s narratives. I offer a nuanced study of the women’s literary works in order to fill a pronounced gap in current exile literature scholarship of the period, which has focused almost exclusively on male authors. My critical framework for this research is interdisciplinary, structured predominantly around the narrative theory of life writing. In addition, I also pull from exile, feminist, and sociological theory. Ultimately, I demonstrate that there are experiences and literary themes common to the three ii women, despite the fact that they were not closely linked in their exile.
